Film Chest has officially announced that it will release a combo pack edition of Lewis Allen's Suddenly (1954), starring Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden and James Gleason. The film, which has been restored from the original 35mm film elements, will be available for purchase on October 16th.
In a house atop a hill overlooking the train station where the president will arrive, three gangsters, led by John Baron (Frank Sinatra, From Here to Eternity), have taken hostages Pop Benson (James Gleason, The Night of the Hunter), his daughter Ellen (Nancy Gates, Some Came Running) and her son Peter III, a.k.a. "Pidge" (Kim Charney, The Werewolf). Local sheriff Tod Shaw (Sterling Hayden, The Asphalt Jungle) and Secret Service agent Dan Carney (Willis Bouchey, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance) are pitted against Baron, who's determined not to let anyone stand in his way.
Special Features:
Audio commentary by Sinatra historian Tom Santopietro
Liner notes
Theatrical trailer
Before-and-after restoration demo
Post card reproduction of the original movie poster
Keep in mind that "restored" in this context means finding a public domain print and then DNR-ing it to within an inch of its life. That's been standard operating procedure for this company on their other releases.
I'd definitely wait for reviews/screenshots prior to ordering.
You wouldn't be making Mr. Sinatra happy with your purchase. Didn't he try to make this film disappear after the Kennedy assassination? Maybe someone else knows the story better . . .
