Japanese helmer Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Pulse, Cure) will direct Hong Kong superstar Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (Infernal Affairs) in the big-budget Japan-China co-production 1905 (2013). Also joining the cast are Shota Matsuda (Ikigami) and former AKB48 singer Maeda Atsuko.
Shooting of the film is set to begin in November in Japan and Taiwan.
Set during the Qing Dynasty, the film tells the story of an aging loan shark (Leung) who decides to travel to Japan to recover outstanding debts from a gang of anti-government revolutionaries. There, he crosses paths with a young nationalist (Matsuda) and a beautiful young woman (Maeda) who will complicate his mission.
Note: Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Tokyo Sonata is currently available on Blu-ray via British distributors Eureka Entertainment. See our review here. Next month, the Criterion Collection is also releasing Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love, starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung.
