Independent distributors Olive Films have added up two more titles to their January slate: Jean-Paul Le Chanois' Les Misérables (1958), starring Jean Gabin, Bernard Blier and René Fleur, and Joseph Losey's Don Giovanni (1979), starring Ruggero Raimondi, John Macurdy and Edda Moser.
Les Miserables is the Epic French adaptation of the classic Victor Hugo tale of the small time criminal Jean Valijean in 18th century France. Forced to endure poverty, imprisonment, and torture, his life is changed by the kindness of a Bishop. He tries to mend his ways, hounded by the vengeful police inspector Javert, who is determined to put him back behind bars. A powerful saga of injustice and redemption, Les Miserables captures the journey of a man swept up in the chaos of a world in turmoil, and the faith that can save him.
Set in Seville in the 1600s, young nobleman Don Giovanni is a well-known philanderer with a long list of amorous conquest. After he attempts to seduce the beautiful Donna Anna, her father's battle to protect her ends in tragedy. Anna and her fiancé Ottavio pledge to seek revenge. While Don Giovanni continues to charm and trick the local women, his inevitable dramatic fate is soon upon him. Masterful opera stars, incredible costumes, the magnificent setting of a 16th-century mansion and Vincenza's mysterious canals make this film version of Don Giovanni a triumph.
