Independence Day Re-Announced for March 11th

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of 'Independence Day' will hit store shelves on March 11th. The release was initially delayed due to compatibility issues with some players. It seems now that those issues have been resolved, and that the release is ready to be delivered into consumer's hands.

Saawariya Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Saawariya' to Blu-ray on March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. It will be presented in 2.40 1080p and in its original Hindi soundtrack. The only extra announced for the release so far is a "Making of the Music" TV special.

Dogma and Gattaca for Blu-ray on March 11th

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Dogma' and 'Gattaca' to Blu-ray on March 11th. Both will be present in 2.40 1080p. 'Dogma' will feature cast and crew commentary, technical commentary, 100 min of deleted scenes (with intros), and the "Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash" commercial. 'Gattaca' will feature a blooper real, deleted scenes, Substance test outtake, and numerous featurettes.

Michael Clayton Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Michael Clayton' to Blu-ray on February 19th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack. Extra features include a full-length audio commentary and deleted scenes.

The Invasion Blu-ray Gets Delayed

Warner Home Entertainment has revealed that they are delaying the release of 'The Invasion' until January 29th. The title, which was originally scheduled to street on January 8th, will feature a VC-1 video encode and Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on a BD-50. Extras include a documentary and three featurettes.

Panasonic Unveils New Thinner Blu-ray Drive

Panasonic is set to unveil a new Blu-ray drive at CES that will be the thinnest laptop Blu-ray drive yet. Panasonic's previous laptop Blu-ray drive was 12.7mm thick. This new drive, which has the ability to read and write Blu-ray discs at 2X, as well as read and write DVDs and CDs, is only 9.5mm thick. No additional information was revealed at this time, but we'll have all the juicy specs live from CES in just a couple of weeks.

Unbreakable, Hidalgo, and Coyote Ugly Get April Blu-ray Releases

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will release three catalog titles for Blu-ray on April 1st. 'Unbreakable', 'Hidalgo', and 'Coyote Ugly' will all be presented in 1080p video with PCM audio. No extras have been announced at this time, but we do know that 'Coyote Ugly' will feature both theatrical and Director's Cut on the same disc.

Hollywood Reporter Predicts 2008 Win for Blu-ray

As this year comes to a close, Hollywood Reporter is making a few predictions about what they expect to see from Hollywood next year. With regards to the format war in 2008, they predict, "Blu-ray blows away HD DVD". Citing the strength of sales as the major reasons for it eventual success, they also suggested that the PlayStation 3 is a major driving force for the format.

Terminator 3 Replacement Program Implemented

Confirming our suspicions, Warner Home Video is taking information to send out replacement discs for the recent Blu-ray release of 'Terminator 3'. When the title is played without the In Movie Experience (IME) activated, the title plays at a maximum resolution of 1080i. Obviously, this is well short of the 1080p presentation promised on the cover. For a replacement disc, contact WHV Customer Support at 1-800-553-6937.

Harry Potter Blu-ray Replacement Program Implemented

As a temporary solution, Warner Home Entertainment is issuing single release replacement discs for owners who found an HD DVD version of 'Goblet of Fire' in their Blu-ray Harry Potter box sets. They will supply a boxset version of the disc, with matching artwork, to you once they have been printed. If you were affected by this, please contact WHV Customer Support at 1-800-553-6937.

Digital Playground Plans First Blu-ray Release

After deciding to release only on the HD DVD format, Digital Playground has gone neutral and will release their adult film 'Pirates' on Blu-ray this January. The main feature will be presented in 1080p, and unlike the HD DVD counterpart, all extras will come in 1080p as well. No other technical specs are available at this time.

The Assassination of Jesse James Gets Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' to Blu-ray on February 26th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced, but expect the usual Warner treatment of VC-1 and a Dolby Digital soundtrack. The only extras will be a 30 minute documentary "Death of an Outlaw" and the theatrical trailer.

One of the most anticipated releases on Blu-ray this quarter is the Blu-ray release of 'Blade Runner'. Demand for the release has left many retailers sold-out, leaving fans of the iconic Sci-fi film empty-handed. Unfortunately, some fans lucky enough to get a copy have found that the fifth disc is actually the same as the first disc, instead of the being the labeled work print.

Specs have not yet been announced for this title, but extras include an audio commentary track, two featurettes, two storyboard sequences, and deleted scenes. PS3 Firmware v2.10 is Ready for Download

Sony Computer Entertainment has released the latest firmware upgrade for the PS3, bringing the video game device up to version 2.10. This update allows the PS3 to playback Blu-ray Profile v1.1 content, which includes picture-in-picture features. Movies featuring PIP content are expected on store shelves within the next few weeks, so make sure you update your PS3 so you don't miss out on any of the content.

Pirates of the Caribbean Replacement Program

Many months after the Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', an error was discovered in the framing of some scenes. To rectify this issue, Disney is offering a replacement disc with the framing corrected. Simply call their customer service line at 1-800-723-4763 (US) and you will need to provide them with your contact information. Have your copy in front of you as well, if possible.

Blu-ray Profile v1.1 Support Comes to PS3 Very Soon

A support file on the European PlayStation site has provided detailed information regarding the upcoming Firmware v2.10 update for the PS3, including that it will upgrade the PS3 to a Blu-ray Profile v1.1 player. This update will allow the machine to playback picture-in-picture content on upcoming Blu-ray titles such as '3:10 to Yuma'.

Sony Remains Preferred Blu-ray Company

Despite new offerings from companies like Panasonic and LG, Sony captured 60% of Blu-ray stand-alone player sales for the week ending November 24th (which includes Black Friday sales data). Coming in second was Samsung with 37% followed by Panasonic with 5% of total sales.
