Wal-Mart to Broaden Focus on Blu-ray

Wal-Mart is committed to rolling out its ‘Blu-ray Experience Area' (which ties in high-definition hardware and software into a central merchandising space within Walmart's entertainment department) to more of its stores during 2010. The chain believes that as pricing has dropped for hardware and software, Wal-Mart's family customer base is now seriously willing to upgrade their home entertainment systems to Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Sales, Dec. 21-27: District 9 Wins the Week

During the week ended December 27, 'District 9' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The South African science-fiction movie with an allegorical subtext also had a substantial 41% of its unit sales coming from high definition. 'The Hangover' came in second, with nearly 90% as many sales as 'District 9'.

Piranha Blu-ray Coming Soon

In April 2010, Shout Factory will commence a new series of home video releases under the banner, “Roger Corman's Cult Classics”, presenting classic titles from the New World Pictures film library. The first title to come out on Blu-ray will be Joe Dante's 'Piranha', which according to retailer information will be released on May 4, 2010.

Gangs of New York Remastered Blu-ray in February

An early announcement to retailers indicates that on February 2, 2010, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release 'Gangs of New York (Remastered Edition)', as part of a new "Miramax Award-Winning Collection". This Martin Scorsese movie had already been released in May 2008, and that edition (whose picture was highly controversial among forum enthusiasts) is apparently now discontinued.

HBO Reveals Hung Season One Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, HBO Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'Hung - Season One' to Blu-ray. According to our good friends at TV Shows on DVD, it will be a two-disc release featuring all 10 episodes from the first season. Technical specs and special features have not been announced at this time.

Entourage Getting First Blu-ray Release

According to our good friends over at TV Shows on DVD, HBO is planning to bring 'Entourage: The Complete Sixth Season' to Blu-ray sometime this summer. This would be the first Blu-ray release for the HBO series, which has been broadcast in HD for many seasons. As the release is still in the planning phases, no technical specs or special features have been announced at this time.

Sleeping Beauty Returns to the Vault in January

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed that the 'Sleeping Beauty: 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition' Blu-ray will return to the Disney Vault on January 30th. Once it returns to the vault, no additional copies will be produced. Those who have yet to purchase the title should do so within the next month, or risk not being able to purchase a copy until its next release in 2015.

A Serious Man on Blu-ray in February

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced 'A Serious Man' for release on Blu-ray on February 9, 2010. 'A Serious Man', the latest movie by the Coen brothers, centers around a physics professor who, as his life falls apart before his eyes, consults three different rabbis for answers. This BD will be a single-sided, non-flipper BD50.

Studio Canal Preparing More Blu-ray Titles for Cinephiles

According to the French media publication Ecran total, Studio Canal will release its third wave of Blu-ray titles in early 2010, which includes some acclaimed movies by major filmmakers: 'Mulholland Drive' (David Lynch, 2001), 'Peeping Tom' (Michael Powell, 1960), 'That Obscure Object of Desire' (Luis Buñuel, 1977), and 'Grand Illusion' (Jean Renoir, 1937).

Computer animation has allowed storytellers to create fantastic dream worlds where imaginations can fly through the air just as easily as they can converse under water. Rarely is the technology used to manifest nightmares of post-apocalyptic war zones, an unfortunate result of incorrect labeling of CG as always having to be child friendly. Today's Blu-ray release of ‘9' is an excellent example of a more adult focused animated film, and it goes a long way to change that stereotype.

Ripley's Daughter Gets Alien Blu-ray as Xmas Gift

The 'Alien' tetralogy is still unannounced on Blu-ray, but one lucky person already has it at home - Sigourney Weaver has revealed that she just gave the discs to her 19-year-old daughter as a "surprise Christmas present." Previously, the New York-born actress had also said she had recorded new commentaries for all four movies.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced 'Law Abiding Citizen' for Blu-ray release on February 16, 2010. 'Law Abiding Citizen', starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, is a thriller about a brilliant sociopath who orchestrates a series of high-profile murders that grip the city of Philadelphia - all from inside his jail cell - and the prosecutor assigned to his case who realizes he is the only one who can end the reign of terror. The BD will exclusively feature an unrated director's cut of the movie.

Warner Home Video's comedy blockbuster 'The Hangover' was also the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended December 20, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. 'Inglourious Basterds', the war movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, came in second. The family title 'G-FORCE' entered at number 4.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant Blu-ray Announced

Universal Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant' to Blu-ray on February 23rd. The film, which was directed by Paul Weitz of 'American Pie' fame, bombed at the box office, only grossing $14M in domestic receipts. For this release, video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Studio Statement on Highlander Season One Blu-ray

In response to the concerns voiced by the first buyers of the Blu-ray edition of 'Highlander: Season One' (namely, that this was a 720p upconvert of a standard-definition source), Davis-Panzer has sent a statement (as a comment to blu-ray.com's news post of December 15), clarifying the production process for this title. In the studio's opinion, "the critiques about the quality of the Highlander Blu-ray experience seem to be due to a lack of awareness regarding HD/Blu-ray technology."

Typically, the week before Christmas lacks big name releases due to studios admission that the majority of holiday shopping has already taken place, and there is no room for last minute purchases like a new Blu-ray release. In fact, the week after Christmas is typically when releases start picking up again, with studios hoping to cash in on the inevitable gift card purchases following the festivities. It is because of this that Sony's decision to push the Blu-ray release of 'District 9' up a week is curious, but we are very thankful we can pick up this title today (or at least find it under the tree on Friday).

Oppo Digital, the maker of the acclaimed but pricy BDP-83 Blu-ray player, has announced on its Twitter page: "We will be announcing a lower-cost Blu-ray player in early January 2010." Wal-Mart, Best Buy Pushing Blu-ray Players for Xmas

This week, Wal-Mart and Best Buy have launched aggressive promotions on their own brand Blu-ray players. Like it did in Black Friday, Wal-Mart is offering the Magnavox MB500MG1F player for $78. Best Buy, in turn, is offering the Insignia NS-WBRDVD for $119.99. The Magnavox is a BonusView player, whereas the Insignia supports BD-Live, Netflix streaming and wireless connectivity.

Robert Rodriguez: Mexico Trilogy on Blu-ray in 2010

Robert Rodriguez has confirmed that all three movies from his "Mexico Trilogy" –or "Mariachi Trilogy"– ('El Mariachi', 'Desperado' and 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico') will be released in 2010 and that he's been personally involved in the project. At this early stage there is no information as to whether the titles will be released individually or as part of a trilogy box set.
