Pioneer 3D Blu-ray Players Now Shipping

Pioneer Electronics has launched its line of Blu-ray players compatible with the Blu-ray 3D specification, under model numbers BDP-430, BDP-41FD and BDP-43FD (the latter two within the Elite product line). All three support HDMI 1.4a, 1080p/24 video playback, online video streaming and wireless functionality with an optional adapter. The Elite models add RS-232C connections, and the highest end BDP-43FD model features "armored chassis build quality."

Hatchet II Blu-ray Detailed

On February 1, 2011, MPI/Dark Sky Films will release Hatchet II. This sequel to the 2006 slasher Hatchet, also written and directed by Adam Green, got a limited theatrical release in October. It will be presented in an unrated director's cut.

During the upcoming CES fair in Las Vegas, filmmakers Michael Mann, Oliver Stone and Baz Luhrmann will take part in a panel discussion on the topic of how new formats such as Blu-ray have changed the creative life of top filmmakers. This panel will be held on January 7, 2011. It has been organized by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and will be moderated by Los Angeles Times reporter Geoff Boucher.

Blu-ray Sales, Dec. 20-26: Inception Kicked Up to No. 1

The Blu-ray release of Inception regained the top-selling spot during the week ended December 26, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Now in its third week in stores, Warner's action thriller narrowly outsold Universal's Despicable Me. The biggest new release of the week, Sony Pictures' Salt, only made it to number 3, but got a remarkable 39% of its total sales from its Blu-ray edition, despite not including a DVD.

Scary Movie 4 Blu-ray Coming Up

An early announcement to retailers indicates that on March 22, 2011, Vivendi Visual Entertainment will release Scary Movie 4 on Blu-ray. Disc details and special features are unannounced as of yet. This horror movie spoof had been released by The Weinstein Company in 2006 on the defunct HD DVD format.

Samsung to Release Thinnest 3D Blu-ray Player Ever

Samsung has revealed that, during the upcoming CES electronics fair, it will present the world's thinnest Blu-ray player. This as yet unnamed player will have a thickness of only 23mm (0.9 inches). It will have a side slot loading mechanism, which indicates it has been designed with wall-mounting in mind. It will be 3D compatible and support also online applications such as Facebook and YouTube.

Kansas City Confidential Blu-ray Announced

Film Chest, in conjunction with HD Cinema Classics and Virgil Films, has announced Kansas City Confidential for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011. This 1952 film noir is is a taut and gritty melodrama, and reportedly the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. It has been "digitally restored in high definition from original 35 mm film assets" and will include a new 5.1 surround sound mix.

Video App to Promote Salt Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the creation of a new video app based on the movie Salt, which was released on Blu-ray last week. The "Compromise Your Friend" app allows users to create and share a video that "outs" a friend as a spy. The app uses Facebook Connect to access images of friends who can then be humorously identified as a sleeper cell agent in a mock newscast that is cut together with scenes from Salt.

MGM Completes Restructuring

Two months after filing for bankruptcy protection, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. has announced that the company's restructuring has become effective, with exit financing of $500 million in place. The company's "pre-packaged" plan of reorganization was confirmed on December 2, 2010, by the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The immediate plans for the studio involve the 23rd James Bond movie and The Hobbit. The studio has not revealed its new plans regarding home video, especially the James Bond films still unreleased on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Catalog Wave from MGM in February

An early announcement to retailers indicates that in February 2011, MGM Home Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, will release four Oscar-winning or nominated catalog movies. On February 8, it will release Thelma & Louise (20th Anniversary Edition) (Ridley Scott, 1991). A week later, the studio will release Last Tango in Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1972), Moonstruck (Norman Jewison, 1987) and Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988).

Oppo UK Launches, BDP-93EU Player Released in Europe

The European version of Oppo's BDP-93 player, model number BDP-93EU, is now up for preorder at the website of Oppo BD UK Ltd. Features and technical specifications are identical to those of the BDP-93, with the exception of region coding, which will be set as "2" for DVD and "B" for BD. Tommy Wiseau’s The Room Blu-ray in 2011, 3D Also Coming Up

Filmmaker Tommy Wiseau has told Entertainment Weekly that he intends to release his cult movie The Room on Blu-ray during the coming year, with additional behind-the-scenes footage. "We want a Blu-ray release before Christmas 2011," he said. Wiseau also revealed that he intends to convert The Room to 3D for theatrical release in late 2011 or in 2012. However, no mention of a 3D Blu-ray release was made.

This 1973 science fiction movie stars Charlton Heston as a detective prowling the dank streets of a polluted, overpopulated New York City gone rotten in 2022. Running time is listed as 143 minutes.

Shortly after widely launching its new Blu-ray player, model BDP-93, Oppo Digital has revealed the details for its upcoming flagship model, number BDP-95. It shares the same playback platform as the BDP-93, but it is designed from the ground up with a different chassis and several audiophile improvements, including SABRE32 Reference audio DACs, a toroidal power supply, a dedicated stereo output, and XLR balanced stereo outputs. It will be available in February 2011.

48 Hrs. Blu-ray Re-announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that, on February 22, 2011, it will release 48 Hrs. on Blu-ray. This 1982 buddy movie starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy had been previously announced in 2009, only to be delayed indefinitely. Its sequel, Another 48 Hrs., has not been announced for BD release.
