Blu-ray Sales, April 22-28: Django Unchained Stays at Number One

For the week that ended on April 28th, Anchor Bay and the Weinstein Company's Django Unchained remained at number one on the Blu-ray and overall package media lists. This violent, darkly comic Western brought director Quentin Tarantino widespread acclaim after it premiered theatrically, earning over $420 million worldwide and receiving five Oscar nominations.

In March, BBC Home Entertainment announced that the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas Special, "The Snowmen," would be included with the Blu-ray edition of Doctor Who: Series Seven, Part Two. However, today the studio revealed that the 2012 Christmas Special will only be available separately and will not be a part of the Series Seven, Part Two release.

DEG: Blu-ray Sales Jumps Nearly 30% Q1

According to a new report released by the The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), Blu-ray sales increased 28.5% for Q1 2013 (over the same period last year). Sales of new release titles on Blu-ray were up 37% in Q1 from a year earlier. Similarly, sales of catalog titles on the HD format experienced robust growth with a 16% gain from the first quarter of 2012. Overall total spending on home video entertainment was up 5%.

First 8K Narrative Film to be Screened at Cannes

Japanese public broadcaster NHK will present the first 8K Super Hi-Vision narrative film at the 66th Cannes Film Festival later this month. Toshio Lee's Beauties À La Carte will be screened at the Hôtel Majestic Barrière on May 16 and 17.
