Kingdom of the Whale Announced

National Geographic National Geographic in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring 'Kingdom of the Whale' to Blu-ray on March 31st, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be announced at this time, but you can expect 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack, similar to previous NatGeo Blu-ray releases.

Blu-ray Movies The fifth quarter has officially started, and while for the most part studios are enjoying some well-deserved time off, Paramount has come out swinging with five hits from their extensive catalog. Today they are releasing 'Days of Thunder', 'Event Horizon', 'Ghost', 'Last Holiday', 'The Truman Show', the later of which Review Editor Ben Williams recently posted a wonderful review for.

Falling Down Gets Digibook Release in May

Warner Bros. Warner Home Video has announced via a retail ad that the Michael Douglas film 'Falling Down' will get a Blu-ray Digibook release on May 26th. As is common with all Digibook releases, the disc will come with a hard cover book featuring photos and short writings on the film. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but you can expect 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Synecdoche, New York Announced for Blu-ray

Hualu Blu-ray Players Released in China

Panasonic China Hualu Panasonic (a joint venture between China Hualu and Panasonic) have release three Blu-ray players for the Chinese market. The Hualu BDP0801 ($292) and BDP0810 ($336) are both BonusView players, while the BDP0821 ($365) supports BD-Live. No other technical specs are known about the players at this time.

Blu-ray Movies While there are always a few last minute shoppers out there, the majority of holiday shopping has already taken place. Movie studios know this, and new release list is very slim today in comparison to a normal week, let alone the monster weeks we've had the past few months. You can rest assured, however, that next week studios will get back into swing as they try to part you from your newly acquired gift certificates during, what they call, the fifth quarter.

Taiwan Unwilling to Support CBHD; Dedicated to Blu-ray

Blu-ray Disc According to reports, manufacturers based in Taiwan have decided to not support the rival CBHD format in China. Citing failures of previous China-based optical disc technologies (EVD) and non-Hollywood supported technology (FVD), they have decided to stick with only supporting Blu-ray, leaving questions as to how long the proprietary format will last.

Hellraiser Blu-ray Coming in April

Anchor Bay Entertainment Fansite Fangoria has been alerted by Anchor Bay Home Entertainment that they will bring 'Hellraiser' to Blu-ray as a 20th Anniversary Edition this April. Originally scheduled to come out before the end of the year, no reason was given for the delay. Supplemental features are expected to match the 20th Anniversary DVD, which was released last year.

More Companies Add Blu-ray to Their Portfolio

Blu-ray Disc MediaTek and Sunplus Technology have announced that they are in the process of getting Blu-ray chipsets certified, with potential clients to begin shipments beginning in the second quarter of next year. They hope to join the ranks of Broadcom and Sigma as major players in the Blu-ray Disc player chipset market.

European Blu-ray Sales Beating Expectations

Blu-ray Disc According to recent reports, sales of Blu-ray titles in the United Kingdom reached 462,500 units in November, an increase of 165% over the previous month. Final December numbers won't be available until sometime next month, but initial data is promising, with the Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight' selling 513,000 units in one day.

Death Race Feature Cost Universal $750K

Universal Studios In a recent interview with Eclipse Magazine, British director Paul W. S. Anderson was asked about the upcoming Blu-ray release of his film 'Death Race', which was released yesterday. One interesting note was that a feature special exclusive to the Blu-ray release cost Universal $750,000 to produce.

Zogby Polls Finds Blu-ray Popularity High

Blu-ray Disc Zogby International released a new poll on Friday which indicated that Blu-ray Disc players are one of the most wanted holiday gifts this season for HDTV owners. Coming in second to only a second HDTV, Blu-ray players received 30% of the vote, beating out other popular gifts such as GPS systems, Nintendo Wii, and MP3 players.

Over $60M Spent on Blu-ray Last Week

Blu-ray Disc According to Home Media Magazine, consumers spent over $60M on Blu-ray titles last week, representing 14% of the home media market. The 167% spike is due in large part to the Blu-ray release of 'The Dark Knight', which is breaking Blu-ray sales records around the world. Comparatively, the previous week, where 'Wanted' was the hot new release, consumers spent $23.64M on Blu-ray.

A&E Home Entertainment A&E Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the BBC miniseries 'Pride and Prejudice' to Blu-ray on March 31st. Besides being presented in 1080p video, no other technical specs are currently known about the release. Additionally, no special features have been announced at this time.

First Hybrid Blu-ray Planned for Release

Blu-ray Disc Japanese optical disc manufacturer Infinity has announced the first Blu-ray release which makes use of a hybrid Blu-ray/DVD release. Due to hit store shelves on February 18th, 'Code Blue' will feature four hybrid discs, which feature a single Blu-ray layer (25GB) and two DVD layers (9GB) on the same side of the disc.

Blu-ray Player Price-cuts Hurt Entry-level Manufacturers

Blu-ray Disc Many Chinese and Taiwanese OEM Blu-ray Disc player manufacturers are seeing their products sit on store shelves while players from major manufactures - such as Sony and Samsung - maintain strong sales. According to reports, this is due to major manufacturers lowering their player prices to the sub-$200 level for the holidays, a move which places them at the same price level as the majority of entry-level players.

BCI Shuts Down; Fate of Blu-ray Releases Unknown

Blu-ray Movies Navarre Corporation announced yesterday that, as a result of the economic recession, they are shutting down BCI Eclipse Company, a wholly-owned subsidiarity and distributor of Blu-ray titles. Their last Blu-ray releases - 'Live From Abbey Road: Best of Season One' and 'Kitaro' - came in November, and no other Blu-ray releases were on their immediate schedule.
