Night After Night is an entertaining pre-code classic based on the story "Single Night" by Louis Bromfield. Produced
by William LeBaron (The General Died at Dawn, Lovin' the Ladies), the filmmaking impresses with an eclectic cast including Mae
West, George Raft, Alison Skipworth, and Constance Cummings.
Joe Anton (George Raft) is a former boxer who wishes to put his past behind him and move on. Joe brings Miss Mabel (Alison Skipworth) and Miss
Jerry Healy (Constance Cummings) to his new speakeasy night club. To Joe's surprise, ex-flame Maudie Triplett (Mae West) is in attendance (providing
both Miss Mabel and Miss Healy will all the sordid details on his past). A strange, unforgettable, and unique night unfolds.
The performances from the cast help to make Night After Night a success. The ensemble does a strong job together and each performer
brings something unique to the table. In a supporting role, Mae West delivers a solid performance that is every-bit as essential to the film as the
leading actors. George Raft and Constance Cummings are especially noteworthy for their performances.
Time to shine.
The production also features superb costumes by Travis Banton (The Paradine Case, Shanghai Express) and Walter Plunkett
(Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris). With the costumes showcasing a night club speakeasy, the design efforts by Banton and
Plunkett are superb. A outstanding, creative, and engaging effort by the designers.
The cinematography by Ernest Haller (Rebel Without a Cause, Gone With the Wind) is one of the best elements of the production.
The black-and-white visuals help to tell the story. A solid effort by Haller.
The screenplay by Vincent Lawrence (Playboy of Paris, Good Dame), Joseph L. Mankiewicz (A Letter to Three Wives,
All About Eve), and Mae West (Goin' to Town, Every Day's a Holiday) helps to tell the story in a compelling way. The script is
fun and charming. The dialogue is well-done as well. There is certainly much to appreciate here.
Directed by Archie Mayo (Vengeance, The Petrified Forest), Night After Night is a fun and delightful cinematic experience.
Mayo does an excellent job in the directing chair and brings forth quality that impresses from the production team and cast of actors. Fans of classic
films will certainly want to check it out (especially for the contribution by Mae West).
