Dominik is an ordinary boy. He's got loads of friends, the hottest girl in school, rich parents and money to spend on brand-name clothes. But one innocent kiss with a mate changes everything. He begins to isolate himself from the outside world, spending all his time on his computer. He meets an anonymous girl who introduces him to the "suicide room," a place from which there is no escape. Caught in a trap woven of his own emotions, Dominik becomes entangled in a web of intrigue and gradually loses what he cherishes most.

Suicide Room Blu-ray Review

2019's "Corpus Christi" was a marvelous feature from director Jan Komasa, helping to bring the Polish filmmaker to global audiences with his assured work on the constantly surprising endeavor. 2011's "Suicide Room" is an earlier effort from the helmer, and it shares some similar storytelling interests in the transformation of people who are stuck in a troubling situation, tracking their development as choices are made and confusion begins to set in. Exploring the world of online connections and teen isolation, "Suicide Room" has issues with editing and tone, but it inspects a fascinating aspect of adolescent life, with critical years of emotional development targeted by social media influence. The depiction here is from a different era of online engagement, but the idea remains relevant in this dark picture.



Dominik (Jakub Gierszal) is a teenager who lives a life of privilege, but he often experiences it alone. His parents, Beata (Agata Kulesza) and Andrzej (Krzysztof Pieczynski), are self-involved, happy to deal with their own problems and pleasures while their son carries on at school. Dominik has few friends, recently encountering trouble with social media after an incident with his classmate and judo sparring partner, drawn to a self-harm video that piques his curiosity. The teen soon enters "The Suicide Room," connecting with Sylwia (Roma Gasiorowska), a suicidal girl who hasn't left her room in a long time. She brings Dominik into the virtual world of "The Suicide Room," giving the young man an escape and point of fixation that begins to consume his life. His parents are snapped out of their selfishness, trying to comprehend the extent of the obsession, but Dominik only goes deeper into the site, losing contact with reality.

Komasa moves slowly through "Suicide Room," taking in the mood of relationships, which includes a defined break in priorities between Dominik and his parents. The adults aren't big on responsibility, chasing their own highs as a wealthy couple who make little time for family experiences. Dominik is no saint, with his spoiled ways creating distance from the world around him, and "Suicide Room" examines steps of isolation, beginning with mistakes made in his life, while bullying comes for him online. "The Suicide Room" provides a space away from it all, and Sylwia becomes someone who listens and interacts with the young man, giving him attention while bringing him into a virtual world where everyday demands melt away as Dominik meets others dealing with psychological issues.

The AVC encoded image (1.78:1 aspect ratio) presentation for "Suicide Room" visits two realms, with a good portion of the feature working with CG- animation to explore the online world of the main character. It's budget work from 2011, and some crudeness is anticipated, but the footage remains colorful, offering a cool sense of fantasy life. Live-action material offers sharper hues with a moodier presence, while lipstick reds and decorative choices are defined. Skin tones are natural. Detail is decent, exploring skin particulars and fibrous outfits. Living spaces and concert halls maintain depth. Delineation is satisfactory. Some mild banding is detected.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA provides crisp dialogue exchanges, following more hushed, emotive acting and louder outbursts without slipping into distortive extremes. Scoring is clear, with defined instrumentation, and soundtrack selections deliver necessary loudness, also providing full low-end beats. Musical moods work with the surrounds for a more immersive listening experience, and atmospherics in both the virtual and real world are appreciable, examining movement and expanse.

Suicide Room Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

 

"Suicide Room" is told through animated sequences, exploring Dominik's fantasy world, and there's the cold reality of life, with the parents eventually snapped to attention by all they've missed. Komasa overstays his welcome with a 116-minute-long run time, making the feature feel meandering at certain moments, going emo-overkill. The story also leads to the usual in Euro-shock cinema, with the helmer trying to leave viewers with a few bruises. It's unnecessary, but the core message presented here is valuable, and "Suicide Room" has a few strong moments of neglect and psychosis that deliver on the potent message of the film.
