Endless Summer Syndrome Blu-ray Review

Family ties are thoroughly knotted in 2023's "Endless Summer Syndrome." It's a French production from co-writer/director Kaveh Daneshmand, and he makes his feature-length helming debut with a specific tonal challenge, following an accusation of incest as it invades what's meant to be a bittersweet vacation for a family of four. "Endless Summer Syndrome" is provocative and somewhat mysterious, but Daneshmand doesn't turn it into exploitation. He remains committed to character and mood, maintaining elements of paranoia and resentment to make an engrossing drama with pieces of a detective story, and one offering an unusual crime up for investigation.



Aslan (Gem Deger) is a teenager about to move to New York City for college. His family elects to celebrate this departure with a trip to the country, getting away from Paris to focus on their final days together. Delphine (Sophie Colon) is a lawyer and somewhat emotionally distant from her children, including Adia (Frederika Milano), and her husband, Antoine (Matheo Capelli), is a more social creature, prone to drinking. One afternoon, Delphine receives a phone call from one of Antoine's colleagues sharing delicate information that, while drunk, he admitted being in a sexual relationship with one of his children. Shocked by the story, Delphine sets out to understand the truth behind the accusation, learning more about her loved ones in the process.

Peace and comfort is established in "Endless Summer Syndrome," watching the characters enjoy their vacation routine, which involves time in a pool, fruity drinks, and general playfulness. Aslan also keeps a snail collection, careful to handle the one that's actually poisonous. The foursome are dealing with separation, finding Asland anxious about traveling to America, but it's business as usual for the group, until Delphine receives a phone call that changes her life.

Tension grows in "Endless Summer Syndrome," as Delphine begins to take a closer look at Antoine and his relationship with Aslan and Adia. She's distraught but poker-faced, allowing dark thoughts and visions to infiltrate her critical thinking, launching a private investigation as paranoia grows. Daneshmand handles escalation wonderfully in the feature, leaning into the illness of it all as seemingly harmless parental attention is suddenly interpreted as something more. Delphine uses phone technology and her own sexuality to explore Antoine's thinking, and she learns more about her children than ever before, finally paying direct attention to their lives. It makes her a better parent in a perverse way, but also sends her down a dark path as she hunts for the truth behind the destructive accusation.

The AVC encoded image (1.33:1 aspect ratio) presentation for "Endless Summer Syndrome" offers very natural colors, leading with a distinct sense of greenery around the vacation home. Skin tones are accurate, along with hair color. Household decoration maintains yellows and browns, and snail habitat visits deliver a hazier blacklight appearance. Detail is excellent, examining ample skin particulars. The rustic living space is also nicely textured. Exteriors remain deep as the characters tour the area, and interiors are dimensional, securing a look at decorative additions. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like. Source is in good condition.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix deals with the quietness of "Endless Summer Syndrome," which is mostly carried by dialogue exchanges. Performances are crisply understood, and some argumentative moments are nicely balanced. Scoring delivers defined instrumentation. Musical moods do go circular at times, offering some immersion, but the feature remains primarily frontal. Low-end isn't challenged. Atmospherics are mild with outdoor engagement and room tone.

"Endless Summer Syndrome" begins to disrupt the flow of the unknown at the midway point, as Daneshmand offers insight into the aftermath of the vacation before the story reaches its conclusion. The creative decision doesn't entirely work for the endeavor, tampering with dramatic momentum, but it's a small misstep in an otherwise riveting picture that carefully heads into unpleasantness, making sure to soak up as much character dimension as possible.
