Queens of Drama Blu-ray Review

Alexis Langlois makes their feature-length directorial debut with "Queens of Drama," and they're not taking the assignment lightly. While working with a small budget, the filmmaker is aiming to make every moment count in the movie, which is an operatic take on the grind of fame, pop music, and relationships, playing around with the details of Britney Spears's life. Langlois goes artful and campy in the endeavor, and they ask a lot of viewers by pushing the run time to nearly two hours of excess. However, "Queens of Drama" is creatively made and certainly committed to the cause, supported by Langlois's hyper-specific vision for the picture, which retains a defined creative fingerprint.



Mimi (Louiza Aura) is an aspiring singer, looking for her big break on the "American Idol"-like competition show, "Starlets Factor." During the audition process, Mimi meets Billie (Gio Ventura), an emotionally volatile punker, and the pair share instant attraction. They try to make a relationship work, but Mimi remains in the closet, and her career blows up when she wins "Starlets Factor," which turns her into a mainstream pop princess while Billie remains underground with her edgy music. Time passes, and fame transforms into a prison for Mimi, who loses track of herself while Billie takes her own journey of identity, keeping the lovers at odds as their careers take major turns over the years.

"Queens of Drama" is "hosted" by Steevy Shady (Bilal Hassani), a Chris Crocker-style internet tyrant who's celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mimi's debut album in the year 2055, reflecting on decades of menacing online behavior. The narrator dials back the clock to 2005, tracking Mimi's experiences on "Starlets Factor," which involves a connection to Billie, who quickly lashes out at the production when her music doesn't fit the tone of the show. The helmer tracks the development of the central relationship, which gives Mimi comfort and anxiety, finding herself transformed into a corporate pop star while burying her true self as a person and artist, complicating time with Billie. "Queens of Drama" follows the rough journey of love and loss, while Langlois plays up the music scene with videos, T.V. programs, and awards shows, filling the frame with color and design to sell the candied nature of the experience, which comes to corrupt the lead characters.

The image presentation (2.39:1 aspect ratio) for "Queens of Drama" is working with intentionally blown out cinematography. Everything is cranked in the feature, finding colors quite intense, delivering blinding primaries and blues and reds dominate design elements. Costuming favors pinks at times, and makeup adds varied hues. Hair color is distinct as well. Skin tones are natural for this style of movie. Detail battles a softly shot endeavor, but skin particulars are present, along with body prosthetics, which remain textured. Interiors are dimensional, maintaining decorative additions. Delineation is acceptable. Compression loses integrity at times, finding banding periodic.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix maintains a steady music presence throughout "Queens of Drama." Performances and music videos offer defined electronic sounds and crisp vocals. Dialogue exchanges are clear, providing balanced emotional swings. Surrounds explore musical moods, offering a bit more depth. Atmospherics are milder but appreciable. Low-end delivers heavier dance music beats.

Queens of Drama Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation

 

"Queens of Drama" maintains layers of visual communication and dramatic meaning, giving Langlois a larger canvas to help explore their artistic vision and impulses. It's an accomplished film, trying to do so much with very little, showing imagination throughout the viewing experience. However, the feature could use a tighter edit, coming off a little too indulgent at times as the pop world becomes a monster factory, losing a bit of focus as visual fetishes take precedence over the story, turning something interesting and creative into a bit of a chore to finish.
