New Blu-ray Release of 300 Confirmed

Posted June 26, 2008 08:06 AM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Bros.At the Saturn Awards earlier this week, Collider.com managed to get an interview with producer Mark Canton, who worked as the producer on '300'. During that interview, he confirmed that they were working on a new Blu-ray release for the film. Given past information from Warner, we expect this release to be called '300: Limited Collector's Edition' and to be released later this year.

When the film was initially released for Blu-ray, it lacked some picture-in-picture functionality that the HD DVD release had. We expect that this new release will restore that functionality as well as introduce new special features.

Even around the time of the initial release, Deborah Snyder, wife of '300' director Zack Snyder, mentioned that a new Blu-ray release was forth-coming.

No technical specs or special features were revealed at this time, but expect to see more soon.

I'm mostly worried that they would get rid of the awesome PCM track, and stick with the less impressive Dolby TrueHD track. They really shot themselves in the foot by doing dialog-norm filtering and then giving you the chance to see how it changed the sound of the film.

Double dipping at it's worse... Some studios just don't know when to stop the greed.

if they removed the grain you would see how fake the movie really is with all the green screening going on and fake blood. the grain helps cover the fake look...

not double dipping on this one, wasnt that great of a movie anyway.

Well lets see what "Limited" about this one... if just cover artwork I will pass but if it includes more extras like say the history channels show they did on the 300 I just may pick it up again.

not double dipping here, but seriously does the grain bother you that much?
i liked it... probably one of my favorite parts of the movie, gave it a nice feel...

but back to the point at hand, please movie studios, STOP making multiple copies of movies...
i thought that was part of the point of bluray, is that you can cram all the shit in the first version and not have to make multiple runs of movies...

Double Dipping within a short timespan that too on Blu-ray is insane. Warner is beginning to show it's true ugly side to both current and potential BD owners.

I hope every last VC-1 encoded-for-HDDVD release gets re-encoded. Hell, for that matter, Blu should
just drop VC-1. Compared to AVC, it sucks. Light blue skies and beige areas are always so noisy in
VC-1.

I don't like how the term "Limited Collector's Edition" is used in the DVD/Blu-ray market. We all know its not going to be limited.

Like others, if there's no improvement in the transfer, then there's no use in getting it. The original was fine as is

a new version for PIP and special features??

this movie was very mediocre to me, the fighting? FANTASTIC. the story? blah. i usually show it to friends by just forwarding to the 20 min battle scenes. after and before that its like pulling teeth IMO.

definitely a rental at most.

It is sad to see them double dipping on this one so soon. Not only is this an abomination when it
comes to double dipping on a $20-30 product, but especially with so many other movies not on BD
yet, this is ridiculous. So instead of getting a new movie to BD, we get one that has already been
released on BD. That is just crap. So here's to a not very different version of a movie we already
have, cheers.

so sad that studios do this so called double dipping
people who support the formats and buy titles at early stages always keep
on paying for that support and studios never seem to care
if theyre bringing an article like a blu ray
which is supposed to be of a certain quality
how come they come out with something better in just a matter of months
i rather wait for a title to come out right the first time instead of having something rushed out
and the worked right afterwards.

I'm a bit interested in this, but added bonus features is not enough at this point in time as I already own the first release and there is so much other stuff coming out this year that I don't own.

Probably only a new encode with the new bonus features would get me to purchase (at least at full price).

Oh - and this better not be in a coffee table package!!!

Relax guys. When the first 300 came out, it couldn't contain all of the features that were on the HD-DVD because the Blu-ray spec just wasn't there yet. Now that Blu-Ray has won, they are just releasing it will all of the features the HD-DVD version had. Possibly with a new, higher bitrate encode.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing your to "double-dip."

Guys! They are not "double dipping". They are phasing out the original pressing of 300, and replacing it with one that has all of the features not possible when the disc was originally released, due to BD profile rollout issues.

They are supporting the BD community by dropping these features in, which were impossible to add to begin with. This movie is going to be on the shelf for years, right? They want a complete version to represent 300 on Blu going forward.

Ya'll act as if they're picking your pocket or something!

I think for the people that have already bought this title (I have not), should be able to trade up for the full price of what the previous title cost. Blu's are supposed to be it. I don't want companies have assing it just to get a title out then less then a year later rereleasing it with better quality. Were not all rich ya know...

If new encodes and has extras like the digital copy and the History channel special (which I am still upset wasn't included with the Blackhawk Down BD like the DVD) I may pick it up again and hand off my current copy to friends at work who have yet to convert to Blu but still have PS3's... (kinda feel like a crack dealer for blu at work at times...)

boycott it! whats this nonsense. with 50gb space shouldnt studious give us best audio and vid quality to begin with? and there is enough space to put all the extras. they should add an extra disc. these bds costs equivalent to 5 movie ticktes for god's sake. shame on warner and on those who buy this again. if warner is so concerned, they should replace 'old' 300 discs with these free of charge.

There will be more new blu ray owners who will buy this, than there will existing blu ray owners. Warner will make enough money from it. You dont have to buy it, I probably will upgrade to it depending on the difference, but there will definately be plenty of new blu ray owners who will get it, who never had it in the first place and thats probably what Warner had in mind.
