Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring the controversial film 'Caligula: The Imperial Edition' to Blu-ray on November 4th. The film, which goes into great detail of the reported sexual deviance of Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Germanicus, has reached cult status due to its graphic nature. The two-disc set will feature 1.85:1 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.
No special features have been announced at this time, but one would expect that all the special features from the previous DVD release of the same name would also be brought to the Blu-ray. These include:
- The Making of Caligula-Documentary
- The Making of Caligula-Featurette
- My Roman Holiday with John Steiner
- Caligula's Pet: A Conversation with Lori Wagner
- Tinto Brass: The Orgy of Power
- Pets Arrive in Rome
- Set Construction, Painting & Props
- Extras Make-Up
- John Gielgud in Make-Up
- Caligula's Arrival in Capri
- Creating Tiberius' Grotto
- Too Much Wine
- Preparing Macro's Execution
- Tinto Brass Directing
- Isis Pool Rehearsals
- Isis Pool Filming
- The Wedding Rape
- Preparing the Wedding Banquet
- Caesonia's Dance Instructor
- Filming the Bordello Ship
- Still Galleries

Special Feature - "The Wedding Rape" - sounds like a lovely movie. (J/k, I've read about this movie, don't think it's my cup of tea - but that's great that it's coming to Blu-ray for any fans).

This is basically an x-rated film right?

Actually, it's -half- an X-rated film (Penthouse wanted to get into film production, just like Playboy was at the time)--
And the other half is Malcolm McDowell, John Gielgud, and respectable English actors in a sleazy -straight- big-budget Roman drama, and one half reportedly didn't know what the other was filming...

This is basically the most expensive porn movie ever released, and should be taken as such. For those wanting some porn in Blu Ray, it's a cause for celebration. For the rest, if you "strip" the movie of all the porn (yes, pun intended), you are left with a very weak and very boring, and I repeat BORING, story (just like a regular porn flick), in a movie that seems to go on forever...

Let's just get it straight - Caligula isn't a porn feature nor is the work of Tinto Brass describable in similar terms.
Thank you.

A lot of people are disregarding this movie as "porn" I always saw it as an Art-house type of film..... with brutal truths of the times...... I guess a lot of people just focus on the "porn" part of it

This movie is more of an artistic movement then anything and shows very gruesome depictions of the various stories of Caligula that have been passed down through the ages.
It is not for the weak at heart and it is not for politically correct sensitive people who would rather see walkie talkies in security guards hands instead of guns. (that was an E.T. reference for anyone who wants to get offended this time around.)

>>A lot of people are disregarding this movie as "porn"<<
Yeah, people see Bob Guccione's name on the x-producer credits and just jump -straight to conclusions-...

Yes Penthouse is renowned for its "Art-house" productions. This movie has already been properly labeled "porn". No amount of well-known British actors, no matter how good they may be, is going to legitimize this film. I'll pass.

The history of this film is one of the greater debacles in all of modern cinema. That's why if the fascinating feature-length documentary is included here (it puts the film in its proper context in cinematic history and is, for my money, better than the feature itself), this will be a certain buy. Especially with the price point at Amazon (just over $20 -- the DVD version was something like $34.99 at Amazon when it came out only a year ago). The Imperial Edition in its entirety would make for one of the most features-packed releases on BD to date.

This is the unrated version, so it will be the uncut one. Can't wait, it is a must buy for me. Even if some parts are quite disturbing, it is a classic so it must be had on blu.

The more serious releases like this on the format the better.
I tire of the mainstream BS that is most Blu-ray releases.

A very uneven film indeed. When Playboy took over after re-financing it, you can just imagine all them fine actors with their heads in their hands. Gore Vidal managed to extricate himself from it very nicely.
This is one Romans movie I may well pass on!!!
