The Third Man Blu-ray Releases Detailed
Posted May 8, 2015 04:48 PM by
StudioCanal has detailed its upcoming Blu-ray releases of the new 4K restoration of Carol Reed's The Third Man, starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard, and Bernard Lee. Street date is July 20.
Restoration details: Intermediate film print, 2nd generation of nitrate film (non-existent original negative), scanned in 4K and restored frame by frame in 4K by Deluxe in England. Restoration supervised by StudioCanal.
Synopsis: Classic thriller written by Graham Greene and starring Orson Welles in which a writer sets about investigating the death of a friend in post-World War II Vienna. Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), a pulp Western writer, arrives in the Austrian capital expecting to take up a job with his old acquaintance, Harry Lime (Welles). When he is informed that Lime died a week previously in a car accident, Martins is intrigued by inconsistencies in the accounts of the death and decides that he can't leave the city without investigating matters further. As a consequence, he finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue and searching for the elusive 'third man' who was at the scene of Lime's death. When the head of the local military police, Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), informs him that Lime was involved in black market drug distribution, the plot thickens even further...

That's what I thought the collector's edition would be like! Dual Format with a CD. Even better that they're adding a booklet, art cards AND a poster...and probably a slipcase too! Sounds like the ultimate edition to date.
If I didn't already own the Criterion I would get the Collector's Edition of this. So I'll settle for the standard when it gets cheap, for the new transfer and different extras!
Surprised the Greene Guardian lecture is audio only since, contrary to Greene's wishes and without his knowledge, it was actually filmed, albeit in low quality (a camera was hidden in the projectionist's window) and broadcast on the BBC a few years ago.
Pre-ordered the three editions (UK Standard, UK Collector's edition and French standard) some days ago..
Will see how much the French one differ (often these are paneuropean disc, but we never know..) and probably cancel one of the two standard ones.
Also, now I understand why suddenly, my YouTube upload of the trailer had so much views
