Blu-ray Sales, Aug. 17-23: Disney Animation Reigns Supreme

Posted August 28, 2015 05:51 PM by Josh Katz

Blu-ray Disc
For the week that ended on August 23rd, the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection premiered at number one on the Blu-ray-only sales roster. A compilation of twelve features from the Mouse House's recent short-film history, this set had a Blu-ray market share of 100%. On the overall package-media rankings, this Blu-ray package debuted at third place, behind DreamWorks' Home and Lionsgate's Insurgent - it sold 69% as many total units as Home.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only ranking was, in fact, Home. This CGI-animated comedy struggled to earn back its production budget for the studio last March. It garnered mediocre critical support (the film has a 55% rating on Metacritic) and grossed only $176 million worldwide on top of its projected $135-million budget (that said, the picture performed much stronger overseas, earning an additional $209 million). On the Blu-ray-only ranking, Home sold 51% as many Blu-rays as the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection and had an HD market share of 35%. Regarding the overall package-media list, Home was at number one this week.

Finally, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Insurgent rounded out the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. An adaptation of the second book in Veronica Roth's popular Divergent series, the picture continues the narrative started in the hit 2014 film Divergent, although Insurgent did not prove as successful as its predecessor. While it had a better worldwide box-office gross ($295 million vs. Divergent's $288 million), at $110 million it also cost about $25 million more to produce; the film also mustered disappointing critical notices, as evinced by its 42% score on Metacritic. On the Blu-ray-only list, Insurgent sold 48% as many copies as the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection and had a Blu-ray market share of 46%. With regard to the overall package-media list, the film came in second place and sold 72% as many total units as the Disney set.

Seriously? These are shorts that could easily be found on other Disney BDs, which I'm sure the target audience for this have a lot of in their collection.

Yeah, that's true. But, I'm sure the appeal was the fact that it's that they are all in one place! No having to put several discs in to watch them. My only wish would have been to have the option of 3D playback for the ones that were originally 3D.

@poya, no not ALL could be found on other Disney releases, plus there is other bonus material as well. Plus they are altogether thus one doesn't need to switch discs to see them in a sitting. I got it, for $19.99 I would obviously rather have paid less, but I've been buying so many Blus under 10 bucks the last few years I don't mind too much an occasional splurge

I wish Destino, One By One and Glago's Guest were on the Disney Shorts Collection. Maybe next time.

They obviously screwed up. Should say HOME grossed only $176 million DOMESTICALLY!
