James Cameron: The Abyss Remastered in 4K, Coming to Blu-ray in 2017

Posted July 24, 2016 05:00 PM by

20th Century FoxDirector James Cameron has confirmed that his beloved film The Abyss has been recently remastered in 4K and will be released on Blu-ray in 2017. Mr. Cameron leaked the news while promoting the upcoming 30th anniversary Blu-ray release of Aliens at Comic-Con in San Diego.

"We've done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it's going to look insanely good. We're going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time", Cameron said.

The news was first reported by Variety.

Synopsis: A civilian oil rig crew is recruited to conduct a search and rescue effort when a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks. One diver (Ed Harris) soon finds himself on a spectacular odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean's surface where he confronts a mysterious that has the power to change the world or destroy it. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn co-star.

It's FOX so, directors cut will probably be released seperately 3 months later, and then repackaged annually for the next decade or so.

I think its safe to assume that there will be both 1080p BD and and Ultra HD/4K versions. The mention of HDR gives it away. HDR is only going to be found on the UHD BDs. I suspect that the use of the phrase "HDR" is going to become a shorthand way of saying that the disc is in Ultra HD. That wasn't intended by the BD authoring people but that's what is about to happen.

We must realize they use HDR in filming for movie theaters and many HD masters have been made using HDR. Does not necessarily mean a UHD version is slated. I sure hope so! This would be awesome knowing Cameron and his tickerings. Plus its a Fox title and Fox is all in on the new format.

I agree with The Abyss not being unanimously beloved, and not by me either. I just really like the movie, plain and simple. But both Terminator and T2 are way better. And True Lies (which I too want on BD naow!) is better or as good as The Abyss.
I'm still excited to finally see this movie released.
While they're at it, I really think they should give T2 the treatment it so desperately needs! 4K, HDR, the works! Stop fooling around with a historical masterpiece. The undeniable truth is that all versions of T2 are still completely inadequate and inferior.

"beloved" ?

Fox wishes. Back in 1989, it cost well over $120 million, plus marketing costs (maybe as much as another 40% on top). Its US box office was under $55, and the all-important international take - which could, as it so often does, have made up the shortfall - amounted to $35. In other words, Fox lost over $100 million on this sentimental Spielberg-esque turkey, which only ever made narrative sense in the extended director's cut (which may not be what is coming next year: the studio puffery is unhelpful, to say the least).

This degree of "beloved" no studio wants or needs, though at least The Abyss's belated appearance on blu ray puts Fox back in the business of catalogue releases (if only, as I suspect, for this one time).

Like others, if True Lies came after that, I'd be happier than a pig in sh-- in a pig stye!
I love Lindsey's emotional breakdown when Virgil sinks ever deeper into the cold darkness. Also, Ed Harris' performance when Virgil is trying to help Lindsay "breathe" is spectacular. Those scenes get me right in the feels. Every time.
Either way, I am hoping for a special addition like what we got for ALIENS or something, with both versions. Crossing my fingers!

Actually, one of the few James Cameron films I don't enjoy too much. I think it's way overrated with a quite laughable plot and also several of the main actors are hamming it, except for Ed Harris who is his good old comatose self throughout the movie. Sorry guys, enjoy the movie but I'm passing on this one.

Absolutely my #1 wish list title. What I'm really wondering is whether Cameron will release this in 2.39:1 or at 1.78:1. I could kind of see the latter, considering his (in)famous quote inside the collector's edition laserdisc in which he indicated that he found the full-frame version of the film "superior in many ways to the widescreen version". Granted that was a different time, but given that this was a Super 35 film, that would give him the leeway to reframe on a shot-by-shot basis, ala Titanic 3D. It seems that if he actually prefers the fuller frame, 1.78:1 would be a decent compromise between both compositions, albeit with the negative side-effect of, arguably, ruining BOTH of those efforts. I could just see him doing this considering how he opted for 1.78:1 with Avatar. Personally, I'd prefer OAR, but I'd find a 1.78:1 presentation interesting as long as he supervised it personally.

@Tech-UK, Cameron specified "what I put into theaters is the Director's cut. Nothing was cut that I didn't want cut. All the extra scenes we've added back in are just a bonus for the fans."

source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Director%27s_cut#Extended_cuts_and_special_editions

So let's stop this nonsense about the Special Edition being The Director's Cut. As he clearly explains; what was show in theaters WAS the director's cut.
Let's put this dead horse to rest!
Thank you.

People are too harsh with the whole proving 1989 box office stats to say it's not "beloved". Especially when some of the most beloved movies of the 80s and 90s aren't ones that were uber-box office smashes in the day. I mean, we can argue Boondock Saints is far more beloved in 2016 than Armageddon yet box office stats were polar opposites. It certainly is better loved today than movies that may have outgrossed it at the time.

And to the guy who was bagging on "only one good movie in 1984", WTF? I don't care for the boat movie or "Dances With Smurfs" myself but from 1984-1994, Cameron was brilliant.

No... I just pointed out that box office receipts in 1989 are irrelevant to a movie's standing in 2016. Many movies that failed at the box office upon initial release are now "beloved". See: Rocky Horror Picture Show, Boondock Saints, Dazed And Confused, The Thing, Blade Runner, Big Trouble In Little China, etc.... None of which were big hits when they came out. yet are more popular today than movies who grossed three times their box office. The Abyss might've been forgotten had another director made it, but it has become a huge cult film over the years if only because it was Cameron in that mythic period between the first two Terminator movies. But a movie can be "beloved" even if failed initially at the box office.

I hope it is the Special Edition. Surprising Cameron did not mention it being in 3D especially seeing his love for the format because the Abyss, especially with its AMAZING underwater shots would look OUTSTANDING in 3D (Cameron knows this!). Talk about total immersion. Maybe this will change when we get closer to the release. I'm pretty sure the studio did not want him to upstage the 30th Anniversary Aliens Blu ray announcement.

@karbon You know the only thing I *dislike* about the Special Edition? Well, there are two. One, I don't like that they didn't get Silvestri to score the extra scenes and stole score from "The Seventh Sign" (even though I've not seen that movie and only associate the music with "The Abyss", that just seems lazy, and I hate when movies lift scores from other movies. But the second is Lindsey's delivery of "it says 'Virgil Brigman back on the air'". I really liked the delivery of that particular line a lot more in the theatrical cut. In the original cut, she was almost annoyed, but hiding how relieved she was with the delivery...sort of shaking her head at it, like "of course he's fine", but she's overwhelmed and can't react properly because it doesn't make sense that he's fine, lol. I just thought it was really cute. In the longer cut she just says it happily with a smile...just comes off as less genuine to me.
