Quo Vadis Announced for Blu-ray Release

Posted November 24, 2008 12:15 PM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Bros.Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the epic film 'Quo Vadis' to Blu-ray on March 17th. This title has already been released on Blu-ray by Warner in both Japan and Korea, and it is widely assumed that the US release will share their technical specs of coming on a BD-50 and utilizing 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a Dolby Digital mono soundtrack.

Confirmed extras for this release include:
  • Commentary by F. X. Feeney -Filmmaker/Writer Feeney explores the genesis of one of MGM's most glorious, grand-scale productions, a movie that took nearly twenty years to make and the one that helped launch the age of the 50's Hollywood epic blockbusters.
  • In the Beginning: Quo Vadis and the Genesis of the Biblical Epic - Although filmmakers have always found inspiration in the Bible, no one ever quite made a movie like Quo Vadis, the definitive Roman spectacle and the production that launched the 50's into an arena of mega-blockbuster epics. This documentary walks the road as long and complex as the film itself, from its roots as a Nobel Peace Prize-winning bestseller to its various ground-breaking adaptations to its place as the most daring and lavish film that MGM, and Louis B. Mayer, dared to undertake.

  • Teaser Trailer

It has been released in Germany as well. I got my copy last week. Great Picture for a movie this old.

It seems that there were no surviving elements to remix the audio to multichannel...

Anyway, a solid release. The only thing I would have been pleased a bit more is if they would have
removed a couple of specks here and there, but overall a pleasant presentation.

Even if the elements don't exist, a lossless Mono track should have been used.

Yes, I agree with you. We germans are, unfortunately, used to get only compressed or non-
multichannel audio tracks. Most studios (Warner, Paramount, Dreamworks, Universal, Disney, Fox)
deliver dubs mostly in DD 5.1 at 640k or if we are lucky (Disney and Universal titles) we get a 1,5MBit
DTS Track.
What is really sad is that in some cases (e.g. Disney) we get an uncompressed or TrueHD/DTS MA
Track, but only at 16Bit instead of 24Bit which is on your domestic release.
This really sucks!

Mmmm... I thought this was widescreen. The Japanese Blu Ray review posted by Rusell L confirms that it's not (because 1:37:1 is the original aspect ratio of the movie, so it's not a disc's flaw).

It's a shame, I thought I was going to rediscover a classic that I've watched on full screen TV over the years.

But no matter. To watch it on Blu Ray will be a worthy upgrade.

No region protection (Warner) and includes original English audio track.

32 euros (pretty expensive).

Excellent film. Will add it to my collection. I'm waiting for some genuine spectacles, films made by Cecil B. DeMille.
