Two Criterion Titles for April

Posted January 16, 2009 12:19 PM by Josh Dreuth

CriterionThe Criterion Collection has announced that they will bring 'The Wages of Fear' and 'In the Realm of the Sense' to Blu-ray on April 24th ('Realm' is day-and-date with the DVD release). Technical specs have yet to be announced, but you can expect to see 1080p AVC video (in the film's original aspect ratio) as well as some sort of lossless or uncompressed soundtrack ('Realm' is confirmed to have a Mono PCM soundtrack).

Extras have also yet to be announced for 'Wages', but they will most like match the previous DVD releases:
  • New, restored high-definition digital transfer
  • New video interviews with assistant director Michel Romanoff and Henri-Georges Clouzot biographer Marc Godin
  • Interview with Yves Montand from 1988
  • Henri Georges Clouzot: An Enlightened Tyrant, a 2004 documentary on the director's career
  • Censored, an analysis of cuts to the film made for the 1955 U.S. release
  • New and improved English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: A 24-page booklet featuring a new essay by novelist Dennis Lehane and a compilation of interviews with the cast and crew of the film

For 'In the Realm of the Sense', extras will include:
  • New, restored high-definition digital transfer (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
  • New audio commentary with film scholar Tony Rayns
  • New interview with actor Tatsuya Fuji
  • A 1976 interview with director Nagisa Oshima and actors Fuji and Eiko Matsuda, and a 2003 program featuring interviews with consulting producer Hayao Shibata, line producer, Koji Wakamatsu, assistant director Yoichi Sai, and film distributor Yoko Asakura
  • Deleted footage
  • U.S. trailer
  • New and improved English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by Japanese film scholar Donald Richie and a reprinted interview with Oshima

Thanks goes to nathanp for submitting the news.

Great to see a date for Wages of Fear finally, I was worrying that it had been cancelled.

@mr.hidef, 'In The Realm of the Senses' is a mono film, there is no 'issue' with the master. Judging
by that comment, it wouldn't be the sort of thing you'd be interested in anyhow - there are no
explosions.

I eagerly await these, but really look forward to Brief Encounter (original version) and Felini's Eight & a half. I believe Criterion have these???
