Original Godzilla Stomps onto Blu-ray in September

Posted May 7, 2009 06:50 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray MoviesIndependent studio Classic Media enters the high-definition arena with its digitally-remastered release of the original 1954 Japanese big-monster classic 'Gojira' (also known as 'Godzilla, King of the Monsters') on Blu-ray on September 22. No detailed specs were given at this time.

The disc will include both the original Japanese version and the heavily-edited US version, for which the distributors worked actor Raymond Burr in the movie, by using doubles and new footage to make it look like Burr was interacting with the Japanese cast.

Extras for this release include:
  • Audio commentary by Godzilla experts Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski
  • 'The Making of the Godzilla Suit' and 'Godzilla: Story Development' featurettes
  • Theatrical trailers

Just when I think 2009 can't get any better for Blu fans, I am (happily) proven wrong. Wonder if the Raymond Burr version will be in HD as well. Probably. Definetly can't wait.

Edit: Just read the Fangoria article: Yes, both versions will be HD.

Xtrem3 - You want to try that again in English this time?

Godzilla rules. I would love to own this. But have the DVD's had more bonus features than this? I just don't want to feel like we're getting short-changed on this one.

I wonder if this will be from the same prints they used on the dvd release? There are actually fully restored prints of all the classic Godzilla movies that has been done for Japan releases. The two disk dvd was in horrible shape with scratches and dirt. I would hate for them to use the same prints when there are fully restored copies around now!

I saw the Raymond Burr version and thought it was boring and stupid. At least the remake had good effects.

I have the DVD version of Gojira and while it is a good package, the film transfer is a disappointing mess that needs a lot of work. I'm hoping for a knockout version on Blu Ray, but I'm going to hold off buying it until all the reviews of the picture and sound quality are in.

Ditto, Cap Nord & camaro. Have the DVD versions of the movies, and they could use a little PQ fixing. Hope they do that for the Blu release.

I want to say I'll wait for the review, but I know myself, though; I'm stupid. I'll probably get these anyway.

Thank God it's the original version and not the American. Should be very interesting, because I have seen some of the remasters when Dish Network had Monsters HD, they ran some in high def and Toho studios did a great job, they look great!

The Millennium series is much better, beginning with Godzilla 2000, and yes, you still get the bad lip sync. :-)

Nice, got the DVD and was planning to buy all the other Godzilla DVDs but I think I'll wait. Hopefully more of them will be released on Blu-ray too.

Would it really look any better on a blu ray for an old movie like this? More likely youll see all the wires they are pulling from the ceiling to support the heavy custom on Godzilla.
