No American Cut for Godzilla Blu-ray

Posted May 11, 2009 10:06 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray MoviesLast week we informed on the upcoming Blu-ray release of the Japanese monster movie 'Gojira' (also known as 'Godzilla, King of the Monsters'), which reportedly was going to include both the Japanese and the US versions of the movie. Unfortunately, updated information shows that only the Japanese version will be included in this Blu-ray Disc.

According to Fangoria, the audio commentary from the DVD will not be featured on the Blu-ray either.

Well that's crappy! I guess they are going to try for a double dip later on? I had my hopes up for this one but will pass until they can get it right!

Raymond Burr rescued us from the original Japanese Godzilla, which was, uhhh, boring? Maybe a hi-def version will make this movie more interesting, but I doubt it.

Won't bother me, for those who havn't seen the Japanese version, it's a real monster movie. Still, for those who wanted it would have been nice

How is this a bad thing? The American cut was a travesty in every possible way.

Disappointing, but the Japanese version is the one that really matters.

Actually some fans and even some critics prefer the U.S. version -- or at least feel that it's comparable. Sure the Burr material is superfluous at times but in others it actually helps shorten what is -- in the Japanese cut -- a longer and frankly more tedious film.

Either way, few people would agree that the U.S. version is a "travesty in every possible way." It is a major disappointment that it's not on there, and in fact I have no interest in this disc if it won't include the commentary or U.S. version.

Blu-Ray was supposed to offer all this extra disc space so that we could get multiple versions of movies and extras on there. This release sounds like another half-assed job and I'm passing for sure.

I just think it would be cool to have a definitive release of both versions plus the commentary track. The release is ok since I prefer the Japanese version more, but the Burr edition is fun to look at and compare.

Pass! I'll stick with the DVD since it had both cuts and the Audio Commentary.

Yet another Blu-Ray release with less content than standard DVD for 2-3 times the price. The Classic Media DVD version is the one to get anyway as it was already re-mastered about as well as you could expect for such an old movie (still plenty of imperfections/grain and pop/static in the mono audio).
I hope someone releases Godzilla 1985 on either DVD or Blu-Ray as it is not available in North America. Some of the newer Godzilla movies would benefit from Blu-Ray but this one would not.

I have the two disc DVD with both versions. I can't imagine that blu-ray is going to bring anything to the old deteriorated film quality or the blown out mono track. Don't see any reason to buy it again.

I hate to say this but the Burr version was crap anyway.

I have the two-disc SD and am tempted to see what HD would do to the picture (and yes, that blown-out mono). If it's a revelation then I'll switch them out. I've only watched the Burr disc once, so it wouldn't be a big problem for me.

American version is pointless. Serves only as a insulting curio that destroyed a piece of art.

Will miss the Burr version, but still want this disc. It will definitely look better in HD. Hope the sound in Dolby TruHD mono.

I think people who watched it at the Movie theater as a kid will likely be disappointed, but I have not seen the American version, so that is perfectly fine for me, and I have heard that version is superior.

The American version wasn't even HD remastered for the DVD and looks like rubbish, so the loss is not that great. At best it would have been included as an SD extra anyway.

Not really Scooby Blu,

If you've seen the JP version then you know how Great of a Classic it is, comepared to the US with whats his face. The US did a poor job at editing it and so much was changed, that the heart and point of the origanl masterpice was gone and covered up. So I'm quite content with just the JP version. At least Blu-ray is giving Gojira the respect it deseves, and not repeating the DVD realese, were it was put next to it boring, unentresting, Americaized version.

So this is going to be a great day one pick up!
