Posted July 23, 2020 10:34 PM by
Earlier today at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced that it will release on Blu-ray Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection. The release will be available for purchase on November 3rd.
UPDATE: Content and special features are included below.
Description: Bugs Bunny, one of animation's most recognizable characters, first hopped onto the screen in 1940 and he's been a pop-culture icon ever since. More than eight generations have enjoyed the timeless antics of the carrot-munching wise guy who always outsmarts his rivals. Cartoons, movies, TV, comics, music, sports and more – this wascally wabbit has done it all. Clever pranks and one-liners are here, along with interviews with today's most renowned animators, historians and superstars. Enjoy the full range of his silly and smart-alecky personality with 60 theatrical shorts restored and remastered to the original 4X3 aspect ratio on Blu-rayÔ for the first time. It's just what the doctor – er, doc – ordered.
Some of the best and most beloved theatrical shorts from Bugs Bunny's illustrious career are featured on Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection. This compilation contains a variety of memorable works, by some of the most renowned animators in cartoon history including Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson, Friz Freleng, Tex Avery and others. Included are Academy Award-nominated/winning shorts such as A Wild Hare and Knighty Knight Bugs. Other popular favorites include Baseball Bugs, Hair Raising Hare, Bugs Bunny Rides Again, 8 Ball Bunny, The Rabbit of Seville, What's Opera Doc? and much more. Fans will be captivated watching the evolution of the look and sound of Bugs Bunny's character through this set of classic shorts that spans several decades, starting with early works from the 1940s, to cartoons which debuted in the 1990s.
"Bugs Bunny is one of the most beloved, iconic cartoon characters in pop culture history. He has delighted generations of fans for 80 years. We have put together a beautiful collection with a wide-ranging assortment of cartoons that celebrate Bugs Bunny's incredible body of work," said Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President Family & Animation Marketing. She added, "Fans of all ages will want to own this eye-catching collection, which commemorates Bugs Bunny's landmark anniversary with some of his most popular cartoons presented in high definition and also contains some fun extras, like a full-size glitter Funko figure, exclusively available in this giftset. This is a release no collector will want to miss."

SPECIAL FEATURES
New Documentary: Bugs Bunny's 80th What's Up Doc-umentary!
Looks like a great release. My only hope is that Lumber Jack-Rabbit - the only Bugs Bunny cartoon to be released in 3-D back in 1953 - is presented here with the option to watch it in 3-D.
That image does make the figurine look pretty horrid. They completely missed his eyes. Obviously, it's just promotional art though, so hopefully there's time to fix it.
Is this a complete collection or some best of release? I'm guessing a best of, considering they're claiming to cover nearly 4 decades of Bugs on only 3 discs. But, maybe that's because it's Bugs only, and not the rest of the Looney Toons family.
@jimqk That may be your hope, But we Looney Tunes fans, are hoping to see this short in Full Screen after having to live with the Matted Widescreen Version for 10 years. I guarantee you that WB won't let us down ;-)
75.00 for a special edition full of stuff I dont need or want. I'll be waiting for a standard edition at a reasonable price. Great to see a bugs set though.
@SwatDB Yeah, I want the same thing, too. I'm a Looney Tunes fan, too. That cropped version sucked. But I'm hoping it is offered in 3-D as well. That wouldn't effect anything for people without 3-D setups. And it would be great for people who love Golden Age 3-D content.
I don't care about the Funko Pop at all, but that letter by Jerry Beck and the envelope it may be in pretty much sold me on the deluxe edition of this set!
Waiting patiently for a press release with a list of every short and bonus feature on each disc...
I told you it was gonna be a stuffed wappit, wasn't too far off!
Three discs? Really? Come on, give us a complete collection! I will only buy a standard version, don't need that taking away space on my shelf though.
I do Not like the Packaging,or that Terrible Figurine of Bugs. If or when they release just the Bluray, then I'll add it to my Classic Animation collection. Where is Max Fleischer's 1940's 17 Superman Shorts already ??? Just 17 shorts and they Don't Restore them ?????? : (
From Digitalbits: "The 3-disc Blu-ray set will include 60 remastered cartoons. Among these will be 20 cartoons that have been released before but are considered “essential,” as well as 40 more cartoons that have either never been remastered on Blu-ray, never been released on home video at all (including Racketeer Rabbit (1946), Rabbit Every Monday (1951), Jack-Wabbit and the Beanstalk (1943), and What’s Cookin’ Doc? (1944) and others), or never been released in the proper Academy aspect ratio! All of them have been fully remastered from original elements in HD. They range from the very earliest cartoons, to the end of the classic Bugs Bunny era in 1964. The set is also filled with special features, including documentary featurettes and audio commentaries."
So looking forward to this! It’s a shame that this is a missed opportunity to release Bugs Bunny’s Complete or at least near complete theatrical filmography on Blu-ray (with a few shorts I had really hoped and thought might finally be released on physical disc like The Unruly Hare, A-Lad in His Lamp, and Beanstalk Bunny not looking like they’ll be included in this set.) But still, already pre-ordered and I’m REALLY looking forward to this!
I hope that we get a list of all the shorts and bonus features will be included in the next few days and hopefully if this set sells really well we can get either a second Bugs Bunny Blu-ray Collection or more Looney Tunes on Blu-ray!
Isn't it kinda nuts that Bugs isn't public domain? It's cool that this set's being released, but an 80 year anniversary collection really highlights how completely borked the US copyright system has become at the hands of studios clinging to nearly century old IP. Mel Blanc's been dead for over 30 years for God sake. Doesn't seem right letting studios place a dam on decades of art and culture just so there's no off-brand Mickey Mouse cartoons or whatever.
What's with all the hate for Funko Pops all of the sudden? They're cute little figures. Nothing more. That said, I tend to prefer slimmed down sets myself, not for on-disc content but for the swag that takes up a lot of shelf room.
@jlk5844 Lots of people have hated Funko Pops since they first hit the market. I've never seen one I thought was tasteful or cute. Then again I wouldn't have a south park character in his underwear as an avatar either.

I see we get 60 (count them, 60!) Bugs Bunny cartoons. (They couldn’t even make it 80 for the 80th Anniversary?). So what about the other 100? How come Warner Brothers can’t ever listen to the fans and get anything right? By the time they do, we’re all going to be six feet under. Bugs is my favourite Warner Brothers character although it would be nice to have complete collections of the other main characters as well. Oh, well. I guess something is better than nothing. Keep smiling. 😀

I agree a complete collection would be great, but the truth is there are many BB cartoons that just aren't good. And there are plenty with stereotypes and offensive caricatures that will never, ever be officially released.
No Rabbit Hood ??? I know it's on The Adv. of R H Bluray. But I thought it would be on here for sure. ?? : ( No Long Hair Hared either ?? Damn ! ? Is Rabbitson Crusoe the one with Sam and the Shark called Dopey Dick ? ... No good Bush wackin Barracuda ?
Look at this way. If this set sells well, then more likely they’ll release the rest of the theatrical shorts will follow. So calm down people. In the meantime, hold on to the Golden Collection DVD’s and The Platform Collection blu-ray’s.
@HallowedSZ What shorts were censored? Don’t buy it then. Do you really think that WB cares if you buy this set. When it doesn’t sell, WB will just release these to HBOMAX, and the shorts will never be released on physical ever again.
Are they ever showing this on Cartoon Network? They use to play this during the 90's when I was a kid. They should keep showing it for future generations and the hell with politically correct whiners with certain episodes.
@Shakingman 40 of the 60 shorts have never been released in HD. Some never on home video. Essentially one of the lesser Platinum Collection releases with some repeats tacked on.
I would have thought the classic 'Heckling Hare' would have been included. But as speculated earlier, they could be saving the others for a second set depending on how these sell (a la Popeye).
Nothing in the statement about whether these episodes are censored and WB knows that is a big deal. Or it is supposed to be - you folks here are more interested in a bobble head.
There's an incredible feature on players called FF where you can go past warnings. It won't cause your machine to explode if you use it. Sadly not available for microwaves yet.
All these people already convinced they will be censored versions......they've already released 3 Platinum collections and a handful of one offs and none of those have been censored. This ain't Disney.
@TheCapn - Ain't it the truth? Some people aren't happy unless they're screaming about what's wrong with everything, real or imagined.
Personally, if it gets below $50 I'm in. Otherwise, will have to be patient and wait for the disc-only release.
I'll buy the regular version if it ever gets released. I own all the platinum editions so far and really don't want to own that figure. It would give me nightmares.
I'm preordering for two reasons: 1.) HD/unlreleased shorts in physical format, and 2.) sales = more physical releases. If this doesn't sell you'll never see the non-Funko'ed version on your shelf. Jerry Beck has said it before - If we don't support physical releases then the corporate owners will assume there is no demand and shelve them or regulate to streaming only. To demand that it be released with exactly the content you want and at a low price point is the height of self-absorption.
Just so everyone is on the same page here, to reiterate what others have already said, NONE OF THE CONTENT IN THIS RELEASE WILL BE CENSORED. None of the Looney Tunes releases WB have put out have ever been censored.
Literally nobody outside of your bubble of weirdos cares about who hosted a panel.
You guys are pre-emptively boycotting a release for reasons that aren't even real and based around anger at an entertainment personality for her - extremely tame and mainstream - political views, that have nothing to do with this product, because fringe media figures are telling you to be mad at them. Do you not see or understand how that is the real "cancel culture" and "political correctness" occurring here?
Channel this anger at the Candyman movie you haven't even seen yet instead. I hear that's a lot of fun for wayward males.
@browncoat Jedi, but media has been changed and altered, for example some episodes of the office have been pulled from streaming services. It’s not unreasonable to be concerned. Many other examples out there of the cancel culture changing things
I wish companies would announce an item get feedback and then make a final decision on a product. In the case of this item some customers will pass on it because they don't want the extra stuff and pay the price for toys, books, stickers, keychains, etc, etc. Batman the entire series comes to mind. I passed on that because of the same reason. I don't like cardboard packaging which Batman was originally and when the extra stuff was gone and plastic cases were used I bought it. Waiting also was smart due to all the problems with discs in original set (see forum for that release). Sooooo, companies see poor sales and think it's because nobody is interested in the release. If they announced an item and got feedback they would maybe consider offering two releases. Still waiting for a regular version of Scooby Doo the complete series in plastic cases with no extra stuff while the first release sits in a warehouse collecting dust.
This looks great, but I gotta pass. The reason is all the wartime Bugs Bunny cartoons are missing. Without those cartoons any collection is lacking.
Yes, the stereotypes in those shorts are extremely un-PC and just borderline racist. But they could have had a film historian or a disclaimer on them explaining why these shorts were made.
Disney released their WW II shorts and training films ( the On The Front Lines Collection) I just wish Warner Bros. would too.
@cowbybill There's roughly 150 Bugs Bunny shorts. There are 60 in this set. That's around 90 missing. There are maybe 5 wartime shorts. This is and was never marketed as a complete Bugs Bunny set. It is a release of dozens more new HD restorations. Missing the war shorts is, again, manufactured outrage.
and to @Don Corleone's point about things being pulled off streaming services. Those episodes were pulled voluntarily by the rights holders of the shows after twitter trolls started posting out of context stills from those episodes of The Office, 30 Rock, Community etc. at their creators on twitter after cast or crew members started to speak out in support of BLM. Those same Twitter trolls are now trying to convince the world they are pedophiles. Those same trolls show up in the comment threads here for 30 year old movies starring actors who are currently in support of BLM or gun control in order to point out how they won't be buying them. That's manufactured outrage, and it's not coming from the people you think it is.
To tie this back into the main message of this thread... none of those episodes are gone if you buy the discs. If you buy these Looney Tunes discs and they make a lot of money maybe one day "Looney Tunes: Just The Ones Where Black People Have Bones Through Their Noses" will be released, and you can enjoy it with your loved ones.
The above comment is what I'm talking about. These people have no idea they're pawns being moved around by political operatives. But they're convinced EVERYONE ELSE is trying to censor them.
In the main thread there's a link to the back cover which states these as for the adult collector and may not be suitable for children. Brave step from the company that has Baby Looney Tunes and Space Jam to worry about.
My only question is why Bugs is chewing on a piece of the crate instead of a carrot (?)
Why do they keep putting those lame Funkos in collector sets ? We're not all Man Babies ! Instead of this set , why don't they put out more volumes of the Looney Tunes Platinum sets.
Kind of surprised that his other shorts from the ‘90s: Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers, Box Office Bunny, Carrotblanca, From Hare to Eternity, isn’t part of the set but I suppose that the set needed 20 shorts on each disc to make it an even 60. It still would’ve been nice to see those shorts in HD for the set.
How many of these shorts are on the Looney Tunes blu-rays previously released?
As near as I can tell, 48 of these have never been released in HD.
Only: A Wild Hare, Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid, The Old Grey Hare, Baseball Bugs, Hair Raising Hare, Haredevil Hare, 8 Ball Bunny, The Rabbit of Seville, Rabbit Fire, What's Opera, Doc?, Show Biz Bugs, and Knighty Knight Bugs have been previously released in HD.
Extremely disappointed at the lack of 3-D for Lumber Jack-Rabbit. This is a unique historic short, as the only 3-D cartoon WB made in the 1950s. I would've been elated to have it in its original format.
If these don’t include lossless audio, I’ll wait for bargain bin pricing, just like I did with the Looney Tunes Collects second and third volumes. I don’t know why WHVcant get this right, when Warner Archive released some of the Looney Tunes shorts with lossless audio in the past. Even Disney, when restoring some of their classic shorts, uses 320kbps Dolby Digital for mono tracks.
In particular, I’d really like to hear What’s Opera Doc and The Rabbit of Seville in 24-bit Dolby True HD (or DTS-HD).
