Play Misty for Me 4K Blu-ray
Posted September 3, 2023 07:33 PM by
Kino Lorber are preparing a 4K Blu-ray release of Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me (1971), starring Clint Eastwood, Jessica Walter, Donna Mills, John Larch, and Jack Ging. The release is expected to arrive on the market later this year.
Synopsis: Popular radio show host Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood) becomes restless in his relationship with his girlfriend (Donna Mills). Impulsively, he goes out and sleeps with a woman (Jessica Walter) he meets at a nightclub. After the fact, he finds out she was not an anonymous hookup, but an obsessive fan who has called in repeatedly to request he play the song "Misty." Garver soon discovers extricating himself from the woman will be no easy feat as she becomes increasingly psychotic.
I watched this for the first time not that long ago and while I thought it was a really good film, I don’t think it’s a film I’d want to watch over and over.
IIRC, Kino's Blu-ray release three years ago was from a new 2K restoration. Has this been re-re-mastered from a newer 4K restoration, or will this just be an upscale of the 2020 remaster with some added HDR? The announcement doesn't say anything about a newer restoration in 4K.
It’s too bad the Kino Lorber Insider recently said that they won’t be doing The Beguiled on 4K… that, along with ‘Misty’ are my two favorite Eastwood films of this era.
It's a Kino announcement. It is useless without a date. This could be coming next month, next year, 2030, never. These Kino announcements are getting annoying.
@Vizsla, KLSC would never release a new 4K disc that merely utilized an upscale of a 2K scan. My goodness. But it is indeed from a new 4K scan, they said so in their announcement.
Met Jessica when my advisor at UCLA in the film department was Richard Walter her brother. Very sweet lady. The late Ron Leibman (her husband at the time was there as well). She gives a marvelously unhinged performance. RiP Jessica.

I missed that. Is it due to elements not being in the best shape? I have the blu-ray and it looks pretty good.

Great time capsule, especially the jazz festival footage. His first directing gig, I believe, and his editing is looser than it would be in his later work, but that’s part of the appeal
