Rumor: Clash of the Titans Blu-ray in 2010

Posted September 17, 2009 11:31 AM by Juan Calonge

Warner Bros.Spanish site Planeta HD is reporting that Warner Home Video is remastering the 1981 movie 'Clash of the Titans', based on the mythological story of Perseus, for its release on Blu-ray to tie in with the remake directed by Louis Leterrier, which is expected to open theatrically in March 2010. As usual, this is unofficial until there is an announcement by the studio.

OMG! Release the Kraken - in 1080p / 5.1 remix.

Day one purchase for me. (DROOL!)

I hope it is a digibook.

I'm all for the original. Mixed feelings about the remake.

I'm not fond of remakes but for this movie it makes sense. The pacing is too slow and the special effects were outdated even for the time.

I love this movie, though.

The 1981 classic would be a Day 1 purchase for me.

I grew up with the 1981 movie and I personally prefer the Harryhausen effects to all the CGI stuff that passes as special effects these days.

Even by comparison to Harryhausen's earlier efforts the effects in Clash of the Titans were awful. They're gonna look even worst in HD. The film is enjoyable on the same level that b-movies like Howard the Duck and Plan 9 from Outer Space are. As far as the remake goes, I've enjoyed Leterrier's work far too much to start complaining now. Incredible Hulk was fun and Unleashed (Danny the Dog) is one of my favorite Jet Li movies.

As much as I love the movie, I'm not sure I want to see it in HD. There's some nostalgia in a crappy DVD transfer. I'm torn on this one.

You do realize that Harryhausen didn't direct Clash of the Titans, right? By this point Will Vinton was doing more convincing stop motion with California Raisins.

I like & share in the earlier poster's comment about the strangely warm nostalgia in a crappy dvd transfer...in regards to the reboot, about the only saving grace is the casting of noted Britons Liam Neeson & Ralph Fiennes....and as long as Leterrier doesn't 'reimagine' it into some fan-boy actioner a la 'GI JOE'....a better directorial choice would have been Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot), who helmed one of my favorite epics of the past decade, Troy.

I could care less about the remake, no interest whatsoever. The Blu-ray of the original on the other hand is a day one pick-up. This was one of those titles that got played a lot in my house when I was in elementary school right next to Beastmaster and Flash Gordon.

The remake could be good... it has Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, anyone?) but it could also flop. The fact that very little is known about it right now is concerning.

But I will take the original on BD any day. Fun film! I hope it's in a new special edition though.

I, too, think that a high-def transfer will potentially show too well the technical flaws of this movie. I've only ever seen it on either television or tape, and it looked pretty bad then. Despite this, I still look forward to this release. Guilty pleasures and all that.

It was an "ok" movie, the story was a bit shallow and the special effects, like many others have said, were already outdated before the movie was even made. The best part of it was Sir Lawrence Oliver as Zeus. I for one am looking forward to the remake and all it's wonderful CGI glory. This is one film that actually needs it, along with Flash Gordon.

yes I realize Harryhausen didn't direct it, but like District 9 his name seems to overshadow the director, as was the case with all of his major movies, the directors were always a second thought, Harryhausen was sort of the creative force behind the films, he's like the Stanley Kubrick of effects...this new one looks god awful though....granted the original had bad dialogue and campyness but it's part of the charm

as a kid I was obsessed with Greek mythology and I saw the original in a hotel by accident...this and Jason and the Argonauts along with a few nick toons and Batman the Animated series was a huge part of my childhood. I really hope they treat the transfer with respect. After the Incredible Hulk I don't trust Leterrier at all. I realize a large green man must be hard CG-wise to pass off but it was just not well done, the only person I'd trust near this material would be Guillermo del Toro but thankfully he's working on the Hobbit

Excellent movie for its time, however, I think younger audiences won't appreciate the special effects in this movie.
