Another Best Buy Exclusive: The Green Mile BD (Update)

Posted October 16, 2009 04:00 AM by Juan Calonge

Warner Bros.We definitely haven't seen the last of Blu-ray exclusives at select retailers. Again without any formal announcement, our forum members have found the Blu-ray of Frank Darabont's 'The Green Mile' sitting on the shelves of Best Buy. The disc comes in the now-familiar Warner digibook, and carries a $29.99 price tag.

There is no information as to when other US retailers will start offering it.

Update

Special features are as follows:
  • Commentary by writer/director Frank Darabont
  • Walking the Mile: The Making of The Green Mile
  • Miracles and Mystery: Creating The Green Mile
  • Deleted scenes
  • Michael Clarke Duncan's screen test
  • Tom Hanks' makeup tests
  • The Teaser Trailer: A case study
  • Trailers
Our reviewer Casey Broadwater bravely volunteered to hop over to Best Buy and procure a copy of this exclusive title. For those interested, you can read Casey's The Green Mile Blu-ray Review here at Blu-ray.com.

Thanks to forum members Gideon and hostelmovies.

Dear Best Buy,

Announcements are good. Price could be better. Sell more discs. Simple enough for ya?

Sincerely,

Hmm, would it be wise to wait for another awesome Warner sale and hope it's available, or go to Best Buy? I'm extremely tempted to go to Best Buy, but I haven't paid that much for a blu-ray, EVER. Hope the transfer is quality

I won't support any title that is retailer exclusive.
I don't care about special edition packaging that's exclusive to certain retailers if I can still get the title itself at Amazon, Best Buy, Wal*Mart, Target, etc., but to limit a title entirely to one retailer is foolish and anti-competitive. Why would Best Buy lower the price if they're the only place you can buy it??

Any titles released like this the studio can get stuffed until they release it wide.

Best Buy is perhaps the worst retailer when it comes to pricing blu-rays; these retailers exclusives drive me nuts.

This was a pretty big movie when it came out. I am surprised there was no info leading up to its release.

I hate best Buy. I pre-ordered Snow White and when I showed up to get it they rudely insisted they did not have it in the blu-ray case. After I got it off the shelf myself, they still insisted that they did not have it as they rang it up.

Blame Warner for this 'exclusive' stupidity.

Yeah Green Mile isn't worth 30 bucks. Lower it, I'll consider it

I will pass on it because of the stupid digibook and will wait until I can get in in a regular BD case someplace for around $20 or less. Good movie but not worth $30.

Totally agree take all these digibooks and burn them!!! These are just like the old dvd flipper cases......useless and look stupid next to the cases that are the standard case! If your gonna keep doing this make both so that the people that like their collection to look as good as there movie's can have the choice!!!

I actually LIKE the digibooks, but only for certain titles. I like that a few "select" titles in my collection stand out from the rest. But again, only for certain titles.

Enough with the exclusives already, make these available everywhere since the format needs to be widespread....and as for digibooks, I don't mind them except that I worry that over time the covers, which are unprotected, are going to wear badly plus if you read the book, it creases the spine. I'd rather have a traditional Blu-ray case.

I guess I am confused. Green Mile on Blu-ray hasn't even been announced and it is already "out" at Best Buy? I don't really care if a title is exclusive or not, and this movie is well worth picking up on Blu-ray, especially to those who haven't seen it. I follow release schedules for the titles I want like a hawk, and have not seen any mention of Green Mile even being released. Ugh.

This really makes me suspicious. I don't doubt that Best Buy has it, but why no announcement? It's like they're trying to hide something. Did they not do a good job with the pq and/or sq? I think I'll wait for a review of the pq and sq before I pick this up.

That's a bit pricy for me... I'll wait until the price drops a bit. The movie is good, but not enough to give up 30 bucks for it. A fair price would be around 14 to 15 bucks... tops. Put me down for $14!

I am going to Best Buy after work today to pick this up. I love the Digibook format. It will look fantastic on my shelf next to "The Shawshank Redemption"!!! It is however, frustrating in the sense that I had no idea it was even available. But I won't care once I have it in my hand. That's just how it goes sometimes.

Ford, I check the BB ad every Sunday, never saw a mention in it, least in the Seattle ad. Maybe it was supposed to be announcing it exclusive to Best Buy in last Sunday's ad, but never saw it in there, and think maybe someone within BB made a mistake and didn't get in there.

great movie and I'm growing really fond of digibooks, but the price is a deal breaker. Will have to wait until it drops to around the $15 mark.

Warner titles usually drop to $15 in 2 months, it will be dirt cheap before Xmas....not worth $30 in that crappy digibook either

I was quite surprised to see this on the shelf yesterday. I was even more surprised by the ridiculous price.

I'm still waiting for the 300 digibook to come down in price because I'm not paying $30-$35 for that either. I've already bought it in HD twice ferchrissakes.

I also so willy wanka and the chocolate factory at best buy about a week ago. Don't know if it was an exclusive or simply placed early by accident.

Picked it up today for $19.99, but have to disagree with the Blu-ray reviewer's opinion on the film. Why people have to compare it to Shawshank Redemption just because it was by the same director and based on a story by Stephen King is beyond me. Is it the best movie ever made, but at least a 4 out of 5 stars, but I appreciate him putting up a review nonetheless so people can read about it even though it hasn't been "officially" announced.

I notice some people don't care for the Digibook format and some say, as the most recent poster they will wait for the regular packaging. I could be wrong, but I don't believe they do "regular" packaging for these titles. For example, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next and Shawshank Redemption to name a few of the previous Digibook formats have only seen that one format as a release, not others. Or am I missing something?

I like the Digibook. It's unique. What I don't like is being charged $30 for a movie I already own. I'll wait for a sale on Amazon. It's not like I have 3 hours to spend on it right now, anyway.
