Rumor: The Abyss and More from Fox on Blu-ray in 2010

Posted November 26, 2009 08:09 AM by Juan Calonge

20th Century FoxAccording to French site Les Numériques, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is preparing a hefty list of titles for Blu-ray release in 2010. Apart from the obvious mention of the Alien quadrilogy, other interesting titles are in the slate, such as 'The Abyss' or 'The Sound of Music'.

Steven Spielberg's 'Minority Report' and Sam Mendes' 'Road to Perdition' are set for May-June 2010, as previously reported (see blu-ray.com, November 13 and November 16). Also in June, Fox expects to release some westerns, such as 'The Magnificent Seven', 'Hang 'Em High' and 'For a Few Dollars More'.

The second half of 2010 will reportedly see Blu-ray releases for James Cameron's 'The Abyss', Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo+Juliet' and 'Moulin Rouge!', the 'Alien' quadrilogy/anthology and 'The Sound of Music' (which is being remastered in 4K).

What about 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines' that was supposed to come out before the end of 2009? Will that still be released?

THE ABYSS - hells yes!!!! It better include the "Under Pressure" making of, one of the best making of documentaries I've seen in years!!

MINORITY REPORT - I thought that was Dreamworks?? I guess Fox owns the video rights. MOULIN ROUGE and ALIEN QUAD, another huge hells yes!!!

Would be nice to see the words "STAR" and "WARS" on a news link sometime. Sigghhhhhhh....

ripclaw, OF COURSE "The Abyss" will be anamorphic widescreen on Blu-ray. No offense, but duh. There are no un-anamorphic Blu-ray discs. Even the discs that have a full screen movie or TV show are 1:78:1 ratio with the pillar boxes built in.

I CAN NOT WAIT for "The Abyss". I have resisted buying it because it would look screwed up on my HDTV. I'd have to zoom in. To have it HD widescreen on my big screen would be a dream. That movie is so underrated. The level of detail Cameron put in to that is astounding.

Note to FOX- Seamless Branching of both versions please. And let's just release "The Abyss", "True Lies" (Which also needs an anamorphic release), and "Avatar" to Blu-ray on the same day!

Um, sounds bad that "Minority Report" is Fox distribution overseas -- does that mean no U.S. release for it next year?

Spielberg supposedly "embraced" blu-ray -- where the heck are his movies? I am so hoping for Jurassic Park(s) before I die (unlike most of you young uns, that's a big concern for me :>)

Ok well by anamorphic perhaps I should say 'Enhanced for Widescreen TVs'. I think you know what I mean. As in not showing the movie letterboxed in a 4x3 ratio.

Finally. The people at Fox had us waiting long. It's not only a debut for The Abyss in HD, but also in widescreen anamorphic mode. We've had to endure, I calculate, almost 15 years of this film in widescreen but only in letterboxed mode on DVD and of course Laserdisc (I remember that huge box with the special edition widescreen LD when it was released around 1995 or so), and we're talikng about an all-time Sci Fi masterpiece that DEMANDS a 16:9 anamorphic transfer. Here's hoping Fox brings on a blu ray release for another awesome film based also on a story by James Cameron which absolutley deserves the same treatment: Strange Days.

Wow, just... Wow.

mishal, I know that complaining about the titles you want over the one's announced has become a tradition in the comments section here, but most people at least try to complain about titles owned by the studio in question. I am sure Fox will now get right on releasing Jaws, SPR and all of those other titles since you posted this here, nevermind what Universal and Dreamworks might have to say about it.

Ripclaw, what forum do you think you are on? This is the Blu-ray forum, not the DVD forum. There is no such thing as an anamorphic Blu-ray. The need for that isn't there like it was for DVD, and they don't do that foolishness with P&S versions on Blu because, again, it is no longer needed.

Now, on the topic of the announcement, looks like 2010 is gearing up to be an even more expensive year than 2009 was for me, and that is really saying something.

I hope the Abyss has the extended edition included. The theatrical cut is almost impossible to understand. I can't for the life of me understand why the original DVD was non-anamorphic. Anyway, none of that matters anymore. For once, I can say first day purchase for me.

Two titles I want to see; Strange Days and True Lies! What is up with the lack of the THX label being applied to blu-ray titles? Die Hard has been THX certified on multiple formats that included VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD. But the biggest reason why I want those two titles is because they would be anamorphic! They have never released an anamorphic version of both titles on DVD. At least True Lies was released with DTS and anamorphic print on D-VHS (be real, how many people bought that format?).

'Sixty knots? No way, Barnes...the Reds don't have anything that fast!'....It'll be nice to finally retire my LD & dvd of The Abyss....argueably my favorite JC film so far. Let's hope Paramount is inspired to finally release Titanic as well. Also looking forward to The Sound of Music in 4K. Finally, it would be smashingly good if Fox sees fit to dust off another one of my fave catalog titles - Thelma and Louise....I call this multi-Oscar nominated 1991 film a turning point in Sir Ridley Scott's career.

Finally The Abyss looking good. Hopefully Fox will release The Abyss anamorphic and unmatted via seemless branching. It would be cool to switch back & forth. In the documentary Cameron shows how he selected the 2.35 frame from the 35 mm footage.

I hope we get both versions too and all the extra's from the DVD. Has anyone ever figured what percentage of the comments on the stories of release announcements are complaints about wanting some other film than the one announced, and what percentage of those are complaints about titles actually owned by the studio involved in the actual title announced? I want a lot of the titles that people are calling for in these comments too, but there are plenty of threads in the forums discussing desired titles and venting on the lack of announcements of this or that studio's catalog titles. Why can't the comments on announcements actually have to do with the titles announced? You know, 'I love it', 'I hate it', 'I want the DC', 'I hope they use seamless branching', you know all of those topics that are hiding between the 'I want this or that Uni title even though this is a Fox announcement' comments? Just a thought.

Also, for like the third or fourth time on this story's comments alone, there is no such thing as an anamorphic Blu-ray. The anamorphic feature is not needed, is not part of the spec, you can stop worrying about this. All Blu-rays are designed for widescreen televisions. I wouldn't harp on this except that people keep posting on it and voting up the comments calling for it and threatening not to buy the BD if it isn't anamorphic, and this seems to be threatening to turn into some unintentional FUD.

The Abyss will make an excellent addition to my collection. I hope it's the director's cut which actually lets the story make sense. B.t.w., the extended DVD release in the Benelux is a pathetic letterbox widescreen version. Can't wait for this one.

love it when people are like where is "Jaws"? uhhh this is FOX ok. I mean you have to at least have the right studio for the comment to make sense ok.
Ask Universal where "Jaws" is. I'm sure we would all LOVE to know when Universal is going to be releasing a lot of titles--like all the HITCHCOCK movies.
As for this list from Fox--looks great to me.

I have to say I was very surprised about the news about For A Few Dollars More as MGM is having financial woes. Does Fox dictate what MGM is to release on blu ray?

I'm INCREDIBLY happy about the Abyss! I was searching online to see if I could find when it's due out. This and the ALIEN set is exciting! James Cameron said in an interview on you tube from a comic con that he wants to push for blu-ray, which isn't surprising as he's ALWAYS at the forefront of using (or inventing!) new technology!
