Yesterday, just after the announcement of an agreement between Redbox and Warner Home Video on delayed movie rentals (see blu-ray.com, January 16), Paul Davis, CEO of Coinstar (the parent company of Redbox), said that Redbox would probably begin offering Blu-ray Disc rentals by mid-2010. He also stated that Blu-ray “strengthens our position to meet consumer demand.”
Regarding pricing, Davis explained that the price point for Blu-ray had not been set yet. However, he was certain it would be “higher than our standard DVDs.”

Great to hear! Just leave the price at 1$, please Redbox! Don't makes us pay more just because it's blu-ray.

Even if it's $2, it's better than BB and NF as long as they have some selection and new releases.

it would have to be $1, because with the 3 at-a-time netflix plan ($30 w/ taxes), you can watch 30 films a month, if you mail out one each morning.

Cool idea. Probably would never use a redbox though.

If the price remains $1 for Blu rentals AND the selection is identical to the existing DVD one, consider my Netflix account canceled! Waiting in line for new releases is no good.

This great but I see a diaster too. People that have standard dvds will rent the blu ray, be confused, bitch, etc. This will make the Redbox line even longer.

I hope it's a separate kiosk just so I can bypass the redbox line and look down my nose at those unkempt DVD people who are still living in the past.

If it's a new release I might consider more than $1 but again unless I am pretty sure I am gonna like it I would definitely be more likely to hold back on more titles thus buying less

Redbox - if you're listening: DO NOT RAISE THE PRICE FOR BLU-RAY!! The fact that it is a new format is NOT a reason to charge more than DVDs! Don't be the same type of idiot as Netflix.
p.s. There currently are some blu-rays in the Redbox machines near me (East Bay, CA) and they're only $1.

This is already in effect in our area (Jacksonville, FL). There are Blu-ray's listed next to the DVD options for certain movies and they are $1 as well. Only thing is is that I prefer to own my Blu-ray's than rent 'em ;-)

That'll be cool when the Redbox machines in my area start carrying blu-ray. I'll just use it as an alternative.

This is great! I got two redboxes within walking distance of me. I'd be happy if the price is only half of what I would find it at BB or Hollywood Video. I'm thinking $2 is what they'll be pricing the movies at.

Cool! I can't wait. This would be great to check quality of bluray then buy. Of course only if the rental is $1.00 otherwise your eating up more of the blu ray purchase money.

"Even if it's $2, it's better than BB and NF as long as they have some selection and new releases."
I don't see how. Even at $5 for a week, Blockbuster is still a little over 70¢ a day. Unless you only need the movie overnight I don't see how $2 a day is a better deal. And you would have to rent 15 movies from Redbox to equal the price of Netflix, and I'm sure a lot of Netflix subscribers can watch more than 15 a month. It is a good thing that Redbox is going to start offering bluray though - for those times when you only want a movie overnight.

Good news. If no more than $2, it'll be good for people who are on the fence on buying a certain Blu-ray and wanna check out the video transfer and audio quality first.

"I thought they had something called Blubox?"
I like Redbox because it is right there when I go food shopping, no loosing time running off to another store. With Blu now in the wings, it's Blubox for me.

would be cool to have the option to rent blu there. i would rather own all my blus.. but there are a few movies out there that i would rather rent and never own just so the family or gf's can watch them ie: chick flixs, funny movies not worthy of blu purchase, kids movies.. just my 2cents.

Nice news. Guess I'm checking out our local Redbox. I'd glance at it but only see DVD. I start seeing Blu and I may just have to pick a few.

BB at $22 one unlimited movie pass is still the cheapest. Being unemployed I will go down there sometimes three times a day if new releases are out I want to watch.

I have been renting Blu-rays for awhile now in San Diego and they are also just a $1.
This is the best deal for me since I am still employed.
