Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray Dated

Posted March 29, 2010 03:21 PM by Juan Calonge

Walt Disney StudiosWalt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced Beauty and the Beast for release on Blu-ray on October 5. It will be presented as a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack (2 Blu-ray Discs and one DVD), and like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 2009, will launch seven weeks ahead of the DVD release.

Disney specifies that the release will feature "state-of-the-art picture restoration," 7.1 audio and "hours of additional viewing experiences," including behind the scenes features, deleted scenes, enhanced music tracks, immersive games and more.

Can we have it now instead? Announcing it more than 6 months before release is kind of rude.

Why does Disney create 7.1 audio tracks for the re-releases such as Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, and Sleeping Beauty but released the Princess and the Frog in 5.1? Not complaining, it sounds great. I'm just curious is anyone knows the reason.

Color me shocked. I would have sworn this one would have been delayed a year. Glad to see Disney continuing the early release pattern for blu-ray versus the DVD only pack.

This is sure to look beautiful. Can't wait. As for the remaining Pixar catalog releases, they usually come out when a new Pixar movie hits theaters or store shelves. See: Cars & Ratatouille, Up & Monsters, Inc., and A Bug's Life and the theatrical release of Up. So expect either Finding Nemo or The Incredibles with the release of Toy Story 3 on BD.

I'm looking forward to this as I haven't seen this movie in probably 12 years, although with the way most Disney movies have been being restored for Blu-ray releases, it will probably seem like I've never seen this movie at all.

Cool, I loved to watch this on VHS, cool to see it put through extra care.
I didn't know this would be in widescreen cause they used to pan&scan a lot of VHS-releases.
I like that.

@Jobber8742: the $10 coupon doesn't normally become active until, the week of release.

Also, I'd hang onto my dvd if I were you. There's usually something of value that doesn't get ported.

And dont be fooled by "restoration". It just means it's the imax remastering. Batb was made digitally, and does not require a restoration.

Does anybody know if this is the original release or the version that they released several years later in IMAX that contained an extra musical number fully animated and integrated into the film ?

I assume this is the home video version of the film which includes "Human Again", a song written for the Broadway Production which was added to the film years after it's theatrical run.

The purist in me hopes that Disney will allow viewers to choose which version to watch. It should be easily to do with seamless branching since there is only the one difference between the two versions. "Human Again" is entertaining and not a big problem, but I would enjoy having the choice.

@ Wallendo – “Human Again” was originally written for, and then cut from the original film. It was then later used as part of the Broadway production. It wasn't written for the Broadway production. In fact Howard Ashman, the lyricist of "Human Again" wasn't even alive to write any additional songs for the Broadway production. After it debuted on Broadway, the animated sequence was completed and added back into the film. I hope both versions are included. Very excited about owning this blu-ray. It’s probably my favorite animated film.

# 3 in my Top 3 "moden" Disney-non-Pixar Animated Features (behind, "Lion King" and "Little Mermaid") And while I'd rather they were released first I'll still get this one as soon as it ships. I also don't have this on DVD whereas I have the other two so it'll be a solid addition to my collection

Well I'm torn. I haven't seen this movie in many many years but I'm a 3D lover. I held out for like 8 years on the Toy Story films (to clarify, I got Blu-ray around the time I had an inkling to see them again and figured wait, but then saw the 3D double features. Splendid!). I held off on B&tB for the same reason but the 2/2010 3D release they had planned was delayed till late next year. If I re-watch the film on Blu-ray this October, not sure I'll want to see it in 3D a year later. I tend to watch movie years apart except for seeing something in theaters, and then again upon Blu-ray arrival.

So probably wait for the big screen

True collector's note: I have held onto a Laserdisc [remember those?] copy of the "Work in Progress" release of Beauty and the Beast, which used storyboards, rough artwork and animated pencil roughs to tell the story along the soundtrack of the film, and I'm betting that this will not be one of the bonus features.

Will be a day one for me as well!!
