Just like the Energizer bunny!

I think Avatar will have much longer legs than The Dark Knight and Planet Earth. This will be a long-standing record to beat folks.

The Tooth Fairy....#3?! Are you kidding me....what is wrong with this world? Why does The Rock make these type of movies? I remember after seeing The Rundown thinking to myself...."This guy is gonna be the next big action film star." I was wrong

@BluBrown - Yeah, at least Arnold waited towards the end of his career (Jingle All the Way). I thought he was going to fill the void as well.

Can we stop with all the "How far can it go" stuff and the "I hope it sells more" and all this crap, people? I mean odds are none of us have anything invested in Fox or Avatar specifically, and while it may be good for the format, it's a pretty easy conclusion to reach that the format will take over eventually anyway. It's just a sub-par SFX porn extravaganza that was at best a mediocre movie. All this "excitement" just sort of makes one wonder what the point of blu-ray is in the first place. I thought it was to have our favorite films in the most cinema-like format we could reasonably achieve, not to revel vicariously through records that a so-so movie could achieve.

So please, can we stop with the revelatory whooping and all that for just one week? It set a record, it is setting a record, and it will set more records. My response will still be: so?

I agree with Runfellow. So all you blokes who can't handle dissenting viewpoints must all log on with your seven different screen-names and "vote down" such comments as a display of your intolerance.

And another thing, as history shows again and again, the "top-grossing" or "biggest-selling" movies are rarely the BEST movies that stand up over time. (Same goes for the Best Picture Oscar winner, for that matter.)
I cite one simple example: "Blade Runner".

Good day.

Avatar was fun but once is enough for me. I won't be buying it, but I'm glad other people are. It's a tangible response to those who talk of the death of physical media, something I don't care to see happen.

It is great what Avatar is doing for Blu-Ray. I have 3 co-workers that have bought Blu-Ray players due to this movie. It is also funny all 3 co-workers also picked up The Dark Knight with there purchase of Blu-Ray Player and Avatar. So it is interesting of what movie people pick up as there second Blu-Ray after Avatar.

Runfellow, the point of Blu-ray is best PQ and AQ, and that is one of the main reasons that Avatar is doing so well. I never saw it in the theaters but when I watched it on Blu-ray, it blew me away. Hands down the best Blu-ray I have in terms of video and audio. In other words, I did not buy it because of all the hype, I bought it because of the reviews I read on this forum and several AV mags. I do agree that the plot was not the best but it was not that bad. So, if you just want to keep on dissing this movie just don't say a frigging thing!!!! Rock on Avatar!!!

SonofArathorn: I'm glad you like Avatar (I don't) but that doesn't give you any reason to insult @candy stalker and his/her views. The fact is when Blade Runner first premiered it was not a success with either the critics or the movie going public. There were a number of reasons for this but over the couple of decades since then it has grown to be considered a classic. Blade Runner has stood the test of time. Despite its box office success so far only time will tell if Avatar will be seen as a milestone or as an just interesting footnote/fad film in move history. There have been lots of the latter and not too many of the former.

I can't understand why it bothers people, who don't like the movie, that it's selling so well. Are you afraid that all of the Hollywood executives are sitting in board room meetings planning out their own giant, blue people movie?

It's good for the format to sell these kind of numbers. And if the movie's making more people buy a blu-ray player, EVEN BETTER!

reidw - I have every right to say I think Blade Runner sucks and by saying that I am in no way insulting anyone except maybe Ridley Scott. I have watched it several times, trying to find what makes it such a "classic", and so far have found nothing.
I'm not saying Avatar is a classic or anything, but it's better than Blade Runner, hell all of the top 3 this week are better than Blade Runner - even the Tooth Fairy.
I am starting to enjoy the small group of people who hate Avatar and wish it wouldn't succeed. I don't understand them at all, but it's funny to watch them cry out in vain. It wasn't the greatest movie, it has many flaws, but it's still very enjoyable.
To those people I say this: get your own ideas about why you don't like it. All I see is people regurgitating the same things that Zyber (can't stand that guy) and his ilk have already said about it. You cry that Avatar wasn't original, copied what others have already done and yet in those tears of anger etc. you yourselves are doing the same thing.
I would contend that in the past 10 years alone we've seen one or two original ideas at best, I look at the collections of the people who say these things about Avatar and find movies like 10,000 BC and such and I wonder do your opinions really come from you?

Does originality automatically equal a good movie? I would say no and I doubt anyone here could disagree. There are really only about 7 or 8 (at most) types of story and every movie that comes out is just a repackaging of those ideas. So get over it, enjoy the fact that it's helping the format and move on and don't bother reading the positive news about it if you dislike it so much. By now fans of the film have heard it all and couldn't care less what you think.
