Nothing good has come out since really, at least nothing with such broad appeal. I'm happy to see it doing so well.
I hope it keeps going but I think True Blood will topple it, and if not than surely Alice and her Hatter friend will take it down.

I would love to know how much money James Cameron is getting out of the movie? (Box Office + DVD + blu-ray)

Well, I mean you also have to figure Amazon has had it for 19.99 since release and pretty much no other "big" new release has been that price point for all but its first 6 days, most have actually been in the 23-27 dollar range. The only title in May that can beat it is Dear John, which I don't think will, so here's looking at Alice in Wonderland to beat the 6 week streak at that time. True Blood is too pricey for alot of people and will wait for the drop, Dear john will outsell it easily SonofArathorn

I give it one more week at the top of the sales chart. Alice in Wonderland should take the #1 spot for a few weeks after its released on the 1st.

PQ yes, SQ no. There are other movies with reference SQ that tops Avatar. It's still great, but not the end all best.

Avatar may be taking BD to a whole new level but what comes next? Frankly a quick look at the list of upcoming BD releases over the next three months leaves me cold. Very little that will generate Avatar level sales. Think of Avatar as an aberration in the market not a trend. BD is great for its PQ and AQ but it is never going to dominate Home Theatre as DVD and/or VHS did. It had to fight off HD DVD for too long and missed its chance. It may in fact be the last physical media format.

Hay I live in a small cheese tulip and windmill land at the Northsea and can quit understand a lot (hm) of the english language, but here i'm a bit puzzled.
SQ PQ and AQ what does that mean??
I only know SQ stands for STATUS QUO (the famous in the last century rock group)
PQ stands for Personell Quality and
AQ stands for Anwers Questions.
or am i very wrong here???
Please help me out.

@ reidw

Dude...you're in denial...not only is it not too late, blu-ray IS taking over the home theater market. 3D will only help further, along with the continued price drops of HDTV's and their market penetration. So will upcoming releases like Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Prince of Persia, Transformers 3, The Pacific, Life, Salt, and so on. You need to expand your horizons beyond 3 months bud

"Not interested in what OTHER people are buying. It's not reliable criteria for quality,

Who ever said what other people are buying is criteria for quality? These are just sales figures, provided to us in weekly reports. Their only purpose is to track sales, not quality - that's what the movie reviews are for. Maybe you're the one who should stay in school.

I think reidw needs to check the stats a little more closely... Blu-ray was on the rise even before Avatar! Consumers still like to 'collect' and actually hold (in their hands) a physical product more than he may realize. Blu-ray is going to be around a while... of that I'm certain!

88% of the market is still DVD. 12% BD. Please agree with me that more than 12% of the populace has HDTV. In other words lots of people with HDTVs still don't think BD is worth a purchase and are sticking with DVDs. BD is a niche market something like Laserdisc. It appeals to the real videophiles not the "VHS crowd" (i.e the ordinary viewer). As such that means it will be never dominant.

My comment about this being the last packaged format is actually a sad one. I prefer real media and as a collector I've got lots of discs. However sales of discs in general are dropping as more people adopt downloading etc. Look at the BD sales of classic and catalogue films. Not even the never released on disc and beautifully remastered African Queen could raise more than a blip in sales. Other major older titles have also failed to impress financially. I don't think the studios are going to remaster more than a handful of prestige classics on BD.

Moving on to Avatar. It has sold great but as I asked what's next? Is there another BD in the works that will come even close to Avatar's sales? Sure BD will grow but in my opinion it is too late for BD to become the dominant medium.

Thanks to all of you for your rebuttals by the way. I felt much like you a few years ago but have come to my conclusions very reluctantly. I think in a few years you'll all see what I'm trying to tell you. If not its been a good discussion.

Ralfeminem (another cringe-worthy "name")

Thank you for setting the record straight as to what I and others who don't agree with your
hive-dictated "opinion" should read.
It's pointless for me to engage a person with a diminished intellect, such as yourself, in a debate pertaining to free speech and spirited discourse.
But, then again, it takes little effort to squash the likes of you
and your alternate screen-name "Blu3" - as in "blew three dudes", I suspect - with something you're decades away from obtaining: rationality.

Not only is it hypocritical to suggest that people should only comment "positively" on a given subject - since I would wager against your private collection of "Twilight" merch that you absolutely do NOT practice what you preach - but it is as unrealistic as me suggesting that people should be required to pass an I.Q. test before being allowed to access the internet.
(I happen to be in favor of such a requirement.)

And thanks for speaking up for the "serious posters". I'm certain this enlightened group that you've fabricated - i.e. your plethora of alternate screen names - feels honoured to have you as their spokeswoman.

Now please do your chores before mommy and daddy get home. Off you go.

I got a slow day at work, so this week last year major releases were Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and a little title called "Taken". Next week will also be tough as its Paul Blart:Mall Cop, Valkyrie, and My Bloody Valentine 3-D vs. Invictus, Valentine's Day and The Spy Next Door. It should be noted that Taken and Paul Blart were in the top 15 selling titles of the year. Nothing to frown upon BR is here to stay.

@ candystalker

1st, your name "candystalker" sounds like the online name for a registered sex offender. Your name is much worse than mine, so lets not go there.

2nd, I am not "Ralfeminem". 2 different people here genius.

3rd, I believe in freedom of speech and you are welcome to post negative comments about the subject matter; however, you're clearly wrong in assuming that these sales figures have anything to do with "quality". It's obvious you're the one with a low intelligence and you're irritated by it. It's ok, nobody's perfect. Your parents still love you.

4th and last, but not least, you're a tool. Thanks to you and others like you, there's more women out there for me and others like me, so thanks!

Cheers mate

@ reidw

You make a valid point, but you can't deny that the blu-ray market is growing, not only steadily but increasingly as well (obviously you can't see this through weeks with no major releases, but overall that's where the trend is). Sure, it may seem slower than the VHS or DVD times, but the world is different too. First, both VHS and DVD enjoyed times of economic boom where blu-ray has only seen recession and low economics thus far in its young life. Second, neither VHS or DVD required a slew of supporting equipment like blu-ray does (HDTV and potential upgrade of AV equipment). It wasn't that hard to buy a VHS or DVD player and hook it up to your tv back then. Blu-ray needs an HDTV at a minimum, and let's face it, only now are HDTV's becoming affordable to the masses, and that's not all - it's not only about cost, it's also about tv programming - many will not spend thousands on an HDTV and blu-ray player just to watch movies (especially in today's economy), they will only justify that when regular broadcasting offers their favorite shows and channels in HD at about the same cost or slightly higher than regular cable (and they feel safe in their job). And then there's the whole generation thing to consider. Older generations only know how to turn on their antenna tv and change the channel (I'm exaggerating a bit here for the effect, but you get the point). Switching to DVD was complicated enough and forget about how to program a DVR. These older generations may never adopt blu-ray without the help of younger relatives or friends and easy to use equipment. Blu-ray, HDTV's, Fios, etc. are really more of a younger generation type of "thing". All these things combined point to a slower adoption rate, especially in 3rd world markets where the vast population can't afford or keep up with cutting edge. I think that, eventually, what we'll see in the future is blu-ray and hi-def in general as the preferred physical media, along with a slew of downloadable options (also in HD). It will take years to go around the world, but HD and blu-ray are here to stay for a while (hell, even 3D is using it to make a comeback). That's my prediction. We'll see how it pans out.
