Really wanted to watch this, but Blu-ray is such a far superior experience sonically and visually that I waited for this release so that I can watch it the first time in all it's 1080p24/lossless glory.
Can't wait to pick this one up, pre-order for sure!

Oh yeah! I missed it because I don't have HBO, so this will be a first day purchase for me provided it's not too expensive. I remember BoB on DVD stayed over $100 for years. I got loucky and bought it used from Amoeba Music here in the city. It was in pristine condition, no scratches, even the tin was perfect. I recently gave it to a friend who doesn't make that much money, when I bought the BD version.
Anyway, hopefully Pacific is reasonable when it comes out!

It's like Band of brothers was a good companion piece to Saving Private Ryan and this is a companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Anyhow I'm grabbing it but I don't feel it was better than Band of Brothers for many reasons, sadly.

Just watched the whole series over Memorial Day weekend (had them on my DVR). I thought it was excellent. I'll be buying this for sure.
As for the Band of Brothers comparisons, BoB was one of the greatest mini-series ever made. "Not as good as Band of Brothers" isn't exactly harsh criticism.

I was so looking forward to this. Well, I still am but I have heard nothing but bad things about it. I know its hard not to compare it to Band of Bros....but I have heard it is sort of boring.
I will probably still get it...but I am a bit leary now.

Watched it on HBO. Struggled to make it through all 10 episodes. Some episodes were so pointless it wanted to make you quit watching it. Watched it once, but I don't think I will ever watch it again.

I have one more episode to watch, and must say there are times it feels like it is pointless to the story, but overall I give it a good rating. The one thing I would say is a big minus is BoB you felt like they were a family, The Pacific is more about a story from the perspective of 3 guys, that really have nothing to do with one another, often the idea comes across they hated each other almost as much as they hated the enemy. BoB is more of a story, this is more of a Hodgepodge.

so the people who disliked were you waiting for Winters to kick in a Tree or something and just start running battles B.O.B style? you cant just go and make a b.o.b. part 2 they had to do different things i think they pulled it real well. this series was well directed and the acting was just as good. the battle scenes were amazing and i liked how they developed the soldiers during the season instead of just doing it all in one episode kinda like B.O.B. however i did like B.OB. better i still thought this lived up to my expectations and will be getting this day 1.

For my part, mishal, I didn't enjoy this. I LOVED Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, the latter being the finest WWII miniseries ever IMHO. But The Pacific really bored me. I really, really wanted to love it, too. But I, like a previous poster, found it a struggle to get through all ten shows.

Unfortunately, I don't think The Pacific worked at all.
The direction was mostly leaden, the acting so-so (with only a few exceptions) and the episode structure and progression deeply flawed.
That said, it's production design and delivery was exceptional (with the exception of some occasionally ropey CGI effects).
Ultimately I think (I have to say that as I wasn't there!) it failed to convey how it may have felt to experience that arena of World War 2.
Comparisons with BoB and SPR are unavoidable and, very sadly, this couldn't hold a candle to either of them...particularly Bob.
Very disappointed and no purchase for me...no matter how shiny the disc presentation.

I thought this miniseries was top-notch and liked the way it integrated "the home front" (life in Australia and US, etc) into the story. Quite engaging and I'll likely pick it up sooner rather than later. I also look forward to the Blu-ray extras described. Seems to be a good value for the money.

I liked it as much as if not more than Band of Brothers. It did a better job of portraying the brutality of combat. I find that most of the people who had a problem with the Pacific never read the books that it was based on. At least read "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge before you write it off.

I didn't read any of the books for Pacific, but I still found it excellent. I loved it as much as BOB. I didn't expect it to be similar because of the differences in the nature of the combat in the Pacific. The focus on the 3 Marines worked for me. I'll buy it, but probably wait a couple of months for a sale.

Very disappointing series. The character development was seriously lacking. Obviously you care about the main 3 characters, but the surrounding characters, came and went. The main difference between BOB and this was in BOB there were 15-20 characters that you followed and cared about from episode 1-10. The Pacific jumped around so much it was hard to associate with the characters or to even know who they were. I can name almost every single major characters name in BOB. Pacific hardly any.

Unfortunately it was lacking the emotional punch that Brothers had. They tried to hard to give us the other side of fighting like finding love and the cost of fighting will mess your mind up if you make it home. The fight sequences were very small and don't even come close to what we got in Brothers. Yes I realize two different areas of the war but The Pacific had very little, and wanted to spend more time on the personal emotional impact of the war than the war itself. I also felt like I couldn't grasp onto a character in this series, and no actors came close to giving us a performance like the guys did in Brothers. I wouldn't spend the big $$ on this if you haven't seen it before, This is no Band of Brothers done in The Pacific

1blufan,
I don't know what series you were watching, but this series had some pretty intense combat sequences. Episodes 1,2, 5,6,7, and 9 were all fighting and a good portion of 4 and 8 were as well. This series was very good IMO. The only think I think BoB did better was developing some of the side characters, whereas the Pacific focuses on 3 Marines and their personal stories/struggles. I will definately be purchasing this on day 1

@Foe
a question - if you've rented the promo at your blockbuster, how good is the quality? Is the video and audio as good as on Band of Brothers? I'm probably going to get it regardless, but I just have a big bit of curiosity about it.

The most disappoint deal with this series is that the majority of the conflict is told in narrations at the beginning of each episode. then it proceeds to bog down on the soldiers emo thick anguish~ Peppering solemn melodies or insane riffs depending on the sad/nuts mode the soldier is in at the moment. 'Band of Brothers' started out with a bang that balanced the emo with the battles at the beginning to drip completely and utterly into morose angst. Perfect example would of been the episode where the leader of the group had to do a after action report. You got to see how he did the strategy like what he did in the earlier episodes and you see his angst over the killing of one of the younger German soldiers~ Great balance!
'The Pacific' Drops the ball right out of the gate by just labeling each episode with numbers unlike 'BoB'. It hits its peak in the second episode and then pours like a tsunami into emo land then on! There is only one major action event that did a great job of showing how men rush into a meat grinder without any sense of tactics what so ever.. Any feeling I should of had for the soldiers had already bled away by then.
I truly feel sorry for the real men shown at the beginning because I never connected with what followed in 9 episodes. So again that side of the war is lost by this series and the movies that Eastwood did. He also did the same by just showing a tiny part of the war to anguish over the destruction of a few men. Taking away the full meaning of why they where there in the first place

I stopped watching after about episode 7. It's ok, but not even in the same galaxy as Band of Brothers. Maybe it's because the main character is a douche and there really are no in-depth supporting characters.
