Update
The Digital Bits has confirmed that both movies will be presented in their theatrical versions only, and no extended cuts will be included.
Additionally, the studio has confirmed that the In-Movie Experience (that was included in the HD DVD of Goblet of Fire but not on the first-edition Blu-ray) will be included in the UE BD.
No extended cuts for these films. That's really, really interesting. Is this at the request of the director(s) or the studio, I wonder.
Still getting these. But, I was very, very curious as to what got put back in with these two films. It is now unlikely that the rest of the films will get extended cuts.
Excellent! About time. I bought the first two, and was worried they may not continue this "Ultimate Editions" series. I can understand why people are reluctant to buy. If you already have standard editions, these sets are VERY EXPENSIVE for what you get! But I am a completist and have to say that I have no remorse for having upgraded (this was a triple dip for me! DVD - Blu - Ultimate!). The packaging and contents are high quality. Films presented in best ever quality, but the extra few minutes of footage presented in movies 1 and 2 would only be noticed by the truest fans. Also you'll need to reserve a large space on your shelf if you plan like me to own the complete set!
I'm not exactly sure if we can rule out extended cuts, because of the info above it says there are digital copies of the Theatrical Film. To me, that seems like there will be extended films again. Just as the first two had the DC of the theatrical.
Well over at Amazon it says that it will have both theatrical & extended cuts on one blu-ray disc with both versions only receiving the 5.1 DTS HDMA soundtrack instead of 6.1 (Theatrical) 5.1(Extended Cut)
I may have spoken slightly too soon because I've checked a few Potter messageboards and this weekend, ABC Family was having a marathon of the films and apparently Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire both aired with deleted scenes back in....
I currently have the first 5 movies on HDDVD, and I don't really feel like upgrading those until the whole series comes out. Once I saw these, I knew I'd get all 8 of them as soon as they all came out, I just don't want to miss some box set of all these with a few more special features, so I'm going to wait until they all come out, make sure I don't have to double dip again, then buy them all. These look like awesome sets.
I was wondering when these were going to hit and all the rumors pointed to the release of Deathly Hallows Part I, but I am glad to see they are coming out a month earlier. I have the first two and will probably go for these (depending on initial pricing).
Great news to know these are coming. I might wait for the eight film collection, but this is awesome to hear, and it sounds like these will be as awesome as the first two.
I can’t wait!!! I got the 1st 2 on Friday actually!!! Hoping they do have extended versions of each just like the 1st 2. I wouldn’t see why they won’t if extended versions have been playing on abc family.
I have been holding off for a decade on ever buying a Harry Potter film because I want to buy the eventual giant box set with all the films in extended cuts.
The problem with holding off for the big box set is that, more than likely, the contents will probably be the exact same as we're getting now. So, in a way, there's really no need to wait.
If if they do a box set of the series, it'll probably be a big box that houses these ultimate editions in the package that they are in now...
These need to be released without all the 'paper extras'. Some of us just want the movies with more content IN the disc. That is, unless they lower the price for these.
Yes Jumpman, but some people prefer to have them in box-set form.
As it is, I wasn't planning on getting any of the movies on Blu-Ray at all until there was a big Ultimate box-set of all of them. I already kind of broke that rule. I alraedy had 1-5 on DVD, and was on the fence on getting the 6th one on Blu-Ray, but when it came in a combo back with a DVD version and was on a good sale when it first came out, I got that one.
But at this point I'd rather wait for a big set of all of the movies for the Ultimate editions. While I would like the extended cuts, they aren't something that I NEED right now. I can make due wit the theatrical cuts. And it would be nice to have them all in a single box set.
I really don't care much for the packaging of these individual Ultimate Editions anyway, so I'd rather wait and see what a box set of all of them might look like.
I'm not waiting for a giant box set since these editions should have all that I need. The only thing that I would upgrade for is a 3-D Version, which I doubt they would do on the first films...only the last two-parter. A little disappointed that they aren't extended cuts, though. I'll still buy them regardless. I love the design of the sets....they look great on my shelf.
Since these are "extended cuts", not "director's cuts", and since I have all the regular edition blu-rays, I probably will wait and see what kind of set they release next fall (Christmas 2011). I suspect there will be many re-releases of this material over the next 4-5 years.
I'll be picking these up when they go below $20. I already have these films and the only reason for me to purchase is to get the lossless soundtracks in something other than PCM. I need this for D-BOX.
One thing I noticed on the link Jumpman provided is that for the digital copy, it states the Theatrical Edition is on the digital copy. Why would they say that if only the theatrical edition was available?? This makes me think there still will be two editions of each movie.
They better have extended cuts! Also, for sure when Order of the Phoenix Ultimate Edition comes out it better have tons of extra time added on to the film as they have said there is something like an hour and a half that was cut for the theatrical release.
I have no reason to double-dip unless they are extended. I dont need all the extra features, digital copies and fluff. I just want the movie and I already have the original Blu. No sale for me, too bad.
Also so I make sure I got this right. There are actually 4-discs?
Disc 1= Movie
Disc 2= Documentary
Disc 3= Special Features and such
Disc 4= Digital Copy
Relax, people. Disc 1 of the first two sets are labeled "The Movie", and the actual press release doesn't mention any version, theatrical or extended (barring the Digital Copy). If I recall, the first two sets were announced in this exact same manner, so just wait for Warner to send out more information before getting out the pitchforks and petitions.
Bill Hunt from the digitalbits has confirmed that Warner has screwed the pooch on these 2 releases:
Well, I would say the big release news today, is that Warner Home Video has just announced the next pair of Harry Potter Ultimate Edition box sets. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will both street on DVD and Blu-ray on 10/19 (SRP $39.92 for DVD and $49.99 for Blu-ray). All of the previous DVD and Blu-ray special features will be included, along with the new Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 3: Creatures documentary (on Azkaban) and Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 4: Sound & Music (on Goblet of Fire). Each will also include a bonus Digital Copy. Azkaban will also include a 48-Page Creatures photo book, 2 collectible Character Cards (Hermione Granger and Sirius Black) and a Year 3 Lenticular Card, while Goblet of Fire will include a 44-Page Sound & Music photo book, 2 more collectible Character Cards (Ronald Weasley and Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody) and a Year 4 Lenticular Card.
[Editor's Note: We have confirmed with WHV that - unlike the first two Potter UEs - there will be no extended versions of the films on these sets.]
So with no extended cuts what is so "Ultimate" about these 2 releases!!!!??? It's the same movie I have now in a big box with extra fluff and same special features except one new documentary.
If there are no extended editions included, I will be very disappointed. Having the scenes added back in was one of the best features of the first two, and made watching the films again exciting. Parts 3 and 4 of the documentary are the big draw here for me, but I was looking forward to the extended editions of all eight films very much.
From my knowledge there are no extended versions of these two movies, only the first two...? Anyway, I might consider getting these since I don't already own the films on Blu-ray and I pretty much liked them when I rented them. (but it may not be until I have a larger or secondary shelf to hold my Blu-rays)
I also imagine, that a lot of people (as well as I) would LOVE an Ultimate Collector's Edition of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-ray with both theatrical AND extended versions! Is this... possible, Warner/New Line?
Lord of the Rings extended editions will be released when ever They get The Hobbit film off the ground..................and it looks as if Peter Jackson is back at the negotiations table to direct both prequels.
To those complaining about no added footage: you need to take it up with their respective directors. The first 2 were done by Chris Columbus. What they show on TV is different from what they have on disc (ask David Lynch of what he thinks of the TV version of "Dune").
I can understand for 3 as there is supposedly only a few minutes of extra usable footage but I was under the impression that beginning with 4 a lot of extra footage had been shot. Maybe they felt that it was not enough to warrant putting the footage back in.
ABC Family has been showing "Extended Cuts" versions for quite some time. Since Warner has advertised from Day 1 that these would be Extended Cuts and they don't do that, Sales will tank. And as other have said, these are not Ultimate Editions. Buyers of Blu ray are able to keep very informed and this is one that will bite Warner in the pocketbook big time.
As for the Creating the World of Harry Potter part, people will just get it on regular DVD.
WARNER, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION!
i'll still b getting these and the whole set so i'm guessing when the last HP movie next year. the whole UE should be complete by the end of 2012.. plus, i haven't seen the last 3 HP films so i'll wait...
"Ultimate" means "last," so I'd say they don't, because I guarantee you these won't be the last ones.
Bummer about no EEs, but I'm now glad I didn't shell out for the UE of the first two movies. I'll just keep my regular Potter BDs and be happy with those.
WB, what are u thinking! Without Extended Cuts in these sets they are just collectors fluff. The best thing about year 1&2 UE was the extended versions. Also what is with WB giving Digital Copies for Watchmen: Complete Motion Comic and LOTR Animated but not compatible with iTunes. Do they do that with most of thier releases? What is wrong with them.
The only reason these editions would be worth buying for me is the extended editions, but i also i hate cardboard-cases and i hate cases that are unnececcarily big so i will not buy this.
This link has a picture of an ad for Prisoner of Azkaban and says that the DVD set is also 3 discs. That means there is no EE's, for the last 2 sets had 4 discs, one being for the EE.
Now that I know that not every film will get an extended cut with these "ultimate editions", I think I will stick with the initial releases for the time being.
Dang. I was really hoping for an extended cut of Prisoner of Azkaban . I'm really curious what and how much they would have put back into the film and whether or not the film would be better because of it. Even an extended cut of Goblet of Fire(which I personally liked alot when it came out) would have been interesting.
I have the Ultimate Editions for the first two films and although I have no need for the extra stuff that came with them (ex. booklet, cards), I felt they were worth the extra money for the lossless DTS Master sound mixes, extended versions of the films, and the documentaries. Even though there are no extended versions of the films for the upcoming UE's, I will still buy them because of the lossless sound mixes and documentaries. The original Harry Potter blu-ray releases all have very lossy CD quality sound mixes that do not come close to what the lossless DTS Master mixes provide. The first two films were evidence of that and I'm sure that these next two releases will benefit even more since their sound designs were more aggressive and system challenging. By the way, Warner Brothers never said that each Ultimate Edition would have an extended version of the films, so those people who feel slighted by the omission have only themselves to blame for making assumptions.
It just bothers me that all of the box sets will not have the same stuff. I am a perfectionist like that. Everything has to have all the same stuff, or it doesn't feel like a set. Espeically if 5 & 6 do get EE's...
dj_intrepid - "The original Harry Potter blu-ray releases all have very lossy CD quality sound mixes that do not come close to what the lossless DTS Master mixes provide."
WRONG.
The discs were PCM. All the Ultimates do is recompress the PCM MASTER into DTS-MA.
I can't believe all the kvetching here. Warner would have provided extended cuts if the directors wanted them to. THEY DIDN'T. *What Family Channel* does and what can be done on Blu-ray are 2 different things!
Stupidest move I have ever heard from a studio....they release the first two with extended then stop and give us what is essentially in the same package as the regular blu ray in these new UE's.......Warner will always receive the least of my attention as far as sales of blus go.......
Awesome editions. I am thinking seriously to buy them, but maybe I will wait the lats 1 in 2 parts to come out... Maybe they will make an ultimate super duper package with all of them. Maybe I will wait until then.
@ PeterTHX "The discs were PCM. All the Ultimates do is recompress the PCM MASTER into DTS-MA"
16 bit 48khz PCM is lossy CD quality sound. PCM does not mean lossless. The PCM tracks can be uncompressed, but that means nothing if it was encoded at a low bitrate and sampling frequency.
The sound mixes for the UE's were entirely remixed for the lossless 24 bit 96khz DTS Master mixes. That is the reason why the UE versions sound far more immersive and dynamic than the original blu-rays, not just because of compression techniques. You can't get 6.1 from 5.1 without some kind of remixing involved.
DJ: PCM is lossless. DD & DTS (& SDDS, AAC, MP3, MP4) are lossy.
The HP discs are from 16-bit masters. 16 bit to 16 bit = no loss. They are also most certainly NOT 96kHz. Films from 2001 & 2002 were not mastered that way.
They are also 5.1 ES, not discrete 6.1. The original masters are 16-bit PCM, 5.1 with an EX (ES) flag (Don't believe me? Watch the credits, look for the DOLBY DIGITAL SURROUND EX logo).
I am not that dissapointed with not having an extended cut for these two films. I would have been extremely curious to see new footage put in the films, but Askaban is a fan favorite and Goblet is already an appropriate length. What I think desperately needs an extended cut is the fifth film, Order of the Phoenix. It is the longest book and is the shortest movie. The movie feels rushed every time I watch it.
@ dj_intrepid: CD sound is not 16 bit 48kHz. It's 16 bit, 44.1 kHz.
@ PeterTHX: a logo at the end of the film doesn't mean much. That's frequently added before the release sound formats are finally determined. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the DVD and BR audio release formats.
Also: While Dolby Digital is technically a "lossy" format, in practice there are almost no losses. As I've posted elsewhere, this can be tested by playing back the original uncompressed track against the compressed track out of phase. What you hear, are the differences (the errors) between them. I've seen a test of this and the only thing you hear is a very occassional "sss" sound. It's really amazing how could it actually is. Not that True HD isn't better.
From Peter THX:
"I can't believe all the kvetching here. Warner would have provided extended cuts if the directors wanted them to. THEY DIDN'T. *What Family Channel* does and what can be done on Blu-ray are 2 different things! '
That's not exactly true. It was already reported that there would be EE's of the rest of the films by Warner. Warner helped create the Extended cuts being shown on the Family Channel presumably with the Studio and the Director's help. These were just not thrown together but thought out and done, with the intention of creating EE's to market to the public to make MONEY.
That's why it seems so lame for Warner to opt out.
"It was already reported that there would be EE's of the rest of the films by Warner."
Except no one can produce documentation where Warner promised such. No press release talked about the rest of the films other than "Sorcerer's Stone" and "Chamber of Secrets".
The Digital Bits sent out another update regarding there being no extended editions....
"Also today, we've got a follow up for you on those two new Harry Potter Ultimate Edition box sets - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will both street on DVD and Blu-ray on 10/19. As you know, we've confirmed that there will be no extended cut of these films on the discs, unlike the first two Potter UEs, and a lot of you wanted to know why. We asked Warner Home Video for a little more information, and what they essentially said was that they would do an extended version if there was significant or important scenes left out by the filmmakers - scenes that would add more than just length to the film if they were restored. So Warner gave the filmmakers the option to create extended cuts, but in the case of both Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire, the directors felt that the best material was already in the film, so there was really no need. Anyway, I just thought some of you would like to know. "
I think I would be interested in these Ultimate Editions. I've seen only one or two of the Potter films, and not in theaters, but it is an interesting series. As the franchise wraps up releasing new films over the next couple years, I'd hope that a mega-box set of these Ultimate Editions of all the Harry Potter films, along with their collectibles, is produced. It may or may not happen exactly like that but we'll see. In any case Warner has really set the standard for Blu-ray Ultimate Collectors Editions; the studio does a phenominal job with these releases and I'm sure they'll do no wrong by one of its biggest franchises in its history. Great that these releases will apparently have the extended and theatrical versions too (if I understood correctly).
this is crazy cause I was browsing around and I found this interesting that over at IGN they have it listed in the digital copy area. it said, "Digital Copy of the Theatrical Edition." Maybe the extended version is only going to be on blu-ray not on the regular dvd ultimate editions.
This is my theory, I think that only on the blu-ray edition will have both versions, but with only a 5.1 DTS HDMA soundtrack on both instead of having a 6.1 DTS HDMA (THEATRICAL) & 5.1 DTS HDMA (EXTENDED). cause of what these post said and the trade ad from highdefdicsnews.com
