20th Century Fox Entertainment has officially announced Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition for Blu-ray release on November 16 in North America (and internationally from November 15). As previously reported, this edition will consist of three discs and contain three versions of the film, including an all-new extended cut, as well as hours of never-before seen material including over 45 minutes of deleted scenes.
The filmmakers and the studio had informed consumers that this Collector's Edition was coming up at the same time that the first edition was announced (see Blu-ray.com, March 16).
Filmmaker James Cameron said: "I told our team – let's do the ultimate box set of Avatar, with everything in it the fans could possibly want. There's an extended length cut that's sixteen minutes longer, plus documentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, artwork and over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Everything worth putting into a special edition is in this set," said James Cameron.
This edition will feature the original theatrical release, a special edition re-release, family audio track with all objectionable language removed and new collector's extended cut with sixteen more minutes including an exclusive alternate opening Earth scene.
A 3D Blu-ray version is not included and has not been announced separately. Panasonic representatives confirmed last month that it would be exclusively available to buyers of Panasonic 3D plasma TVs (see Blu-ray.com, September 3).
"Capturing Avatar" is an in-depth feature length documentary covering the 16 year filmmaker journey including all-new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau and cast and crew exploring James Cameron's unique vision for this film.
Fans can dive further into the world of the Na'vi and experience the film from behind the scenes, with a "master class" on the production. Using Blu-ray interactivity, viewers can experience the full film in three stages of production: Performance Capture, Template (or "1990's video game" version) and Final as well as a composite of all stages in "Pandora's Box". This will be supported with interviews by Jim Cameron and the filmmakers and serve as a "master class" on the making of Avatar.

Update
Cinema site Filmshaft has posted two trailers for the Extended Collector's Edition:
roll up roll up ... keep handing your $$ over to Fox ..... lets predict there will be a yearly version of this rolled out for the next decade - just a few more minutes at a time.
Here in Australia it's just been listed for pre-order with EzyDVD for a cool $95AU ($91US)! For that price forget about it. Here's hoping for a better price overseas!
Yea - I can't understand them not listing a JC Commentary track, or Having one I should say. Maybe there's just so much covered already in the Supplements/Making Of/Documentary type stuff, that he figured they would answer much of anyone's questions (?). Still, I'd love to have a Director's Commentary. Oh wait, that'll prob. be on Version # 7...
Are they waiting for reactions before announcing the SRP? :P
I can see this going for like $50 SRP. Higher then that and I'll just wait for a price drop...
I'd rather watch Robert De Niro defend the mission against Spanish conquistadors than watch Tom Cruise save Japan, but I'd really rather watch Kevin Costner saving his Indian tribe on blu most of all.
Before anyone else wants to comment on this movie being "milked", READ THIS: This is only the second release and it was basically announced before the first release had even come out. So shut up.
95 buck in Aus at ezydvd!!!!!!! And i was hoping that i coul get the ultimate editions for avatar and inception for under 100 dollars this christmas! DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!! i still want it though, just for that extended cut...
@stubiedoo - I'm sure it's not three whole versions. it's the theatrical version and then it branches into deleted scenes depending on what version you are watching like how Lord Of The Rings extended editions did
i'll end up getting this, but when depends on the price and how much off the coupon from the original release will be
@stubiedoo, thanks to seamless branching, it's only about 16-17 minutes of added footage in all. It shouldn't noticably affect the video... although that "Family Audio" track will probably affect the quality more especially if it's DTSHD-MA.
@joenostalgia23: Shouldn't they be able to branch the audio as well? It's not like there was that much obscene language in the film to begin with, it wasn't rated R you know...
While I won't be feeling sorry for Fox anytime soon (Avatar must have made them a ton of dough), it's worth noting they have not had 1 single movie cross the $Million100 mark at the US box office in 2010 (Date Night is their highest grossing movie of the year so far with $Million98. Back to Avatar, I never got the first BD release, as I wanted to wait for this fully loaded version. Not exactly dying to watch the movie again, but those special features look interesting.
It constantly seems to me the way people vote negative for certain comments, that whenever people are criticizing either this movie or the MANY releases it is getting, or that people think that maybe Jim Cameron also could focus on for example his BIGGEST movies and most famous - the Terminator 1 & 2 - that those people are just gladly accepting whatever scenario we are getting. It's like "YAY! More Avatar!" and screw all his other movies. At least those that *I* grew up with and which are my favorites and that were total blockbusters and iconic. Avatar is shite compared to T2! And so is even The Abyss, even if the movie in itself is OK to watch from time to time. But, like I said, some people don't like certain criticism which is even based on general facts. Movie fans my a$$... Just wear blindfolds and randomly hand out your money to the capitalist movie studios. Yippee... (Now let's see how many hate this comment...)
Unless this arrives in store at a low price I will either wait for a pricing error by a vendor somewhere in the near future, similar to the way I got LOTR trilogy on Blu for $25 or I'll wait for the 2011 Holiday run. Right now I am very satisfied with the version I own...
I just got tingly. Definitely worth the wait. Plus, only the movie is on the first disc, so the video quality shouldn't be affected much by the 16 extra minutes. Can't wait for the true release of Avatar, not the barebones edition Fox tried to push on us.
Well now wait a second. The special edition re-release (which I did not see) was supposedly 8 minutes longer. Is this 3rd version 16 minutes longer than the theatrical or 16 minutes longer than the SE?
I read in several online articles that there is supposed to be a sex scene of Jake and the Neytiri. Does anybody know if this will be included in the extended scene or maybe in the deleted scenes?
on the 3rd release a barebones 3d (the one with panasonic), 4th release another 3d barebones but the extras will be "DVD version of the film and regular 2d BD disc" by the 5th release around 2012 it will be the 3d with all this extras then by the 6th the ultimate bd edition with 2 or 3 more extras and commentary.
they should use the space for the "family" audio track for the commentary.
Why add a "family audio track" to a non family film? The kids old enough to watch this film and able to understand this is fantasy, are also able to handle the language in this film.
Seriously that LCE price is ludicrous for a hard case and a film cell, just because there's apparently only 1000 of them being made doesn't justify a price like that............
I really enjoyed this movie the first time I saw it in theaters, but upon a couple repeat viewings its weaknesses really showed through. Now the dialouge seems terrible, the special effects are amazing looking but still somewhat cartoony, and the acting (especially by Worthington) is pretty stale. My opinion doesn't matter though, I'm sure they'll sell at least a few million copies of each version they put out every year... I just wish that the general public would get excited about the best movies, not just the biggest.
I will stick with the bare bones one since it will probably be the best quality anyways. This version will have lower bit rate because of the worthless family audio track which may or may not hurt the video quality a little. I may rent this one just to see the extra footage though. And if the price ever comes down to near 10$ I may buy it.
I haven't picked up the first edition of the Blu, so I most likely will pick this one up when the price is right. This looks like a pretty sweet edition.
If those 45 minutes of deleted scenes were add to the additional 16 minutes, I'd buy it. I really don't think I am going to miss 16 minutes especially if its blue cartoon people getting it on for some of them.
Honestly, does anyone still care about this movie? Saw it in theatres thought it was ok. Rented it to see what it would look and sound like on Blu and could barely sit through it.
seigneur_rayden, where did you see $54.99? If that's true, then they can forget about it. However, maybe this means the barebones will drop to $9.99. That's all I would need.
alright this is a pretty good movie. but im kinda really kinda sum what fuckin confuzed. what is the difference between the theatrical version and the special re release version. oh never mind its jus an audible censored version at least that's what i understand from reading the info, if im wrong then may i be corrected. kinda fucking retarded if you ask me its a pg13 movie i didnt think it would have the need to be edited for language. just another way in my opinion for james cameron and fox to get our money. dont get me wrong its a badass movie but i dont think im going to dish out the extra money to buy this again to probably not watch it, watching it once or twice is good enough for me.
I think the family audio thing is a good idea, with a movie like this it's definitely going to attract attention of kids and nobody wants their kids hearing GD all the time or asking them what "limp dick" means lol i don't want to hear cussing that much either, shows lack of creativity when it's said a lot
and yes, press release from Fox has set the MSPR is $54.99 ($66.99 in Canada). but that will be probably $40 retail and then the coupon from the previous one will probably be atleast $10, i don't see how they can get away with the coupon being any less.
Thanks. Paying $50 after tax is unacceptable (using an estimated $44.99 CAD). Afterall, Beauty And The Beast was selling for $17.99 in canada and there's three versions there as well. More importantly Beauty And The Beast is vastly superior to Avatar.
Don't you mean a "horrible at parenting" audio track?
You know for parents too scared or lazy to find a movie without swear words or *gasp* the intestinal fortitude and patience to explain to your kids what swear words are. I mean there's also guns and explosions and people being killed, you don't seem to have an issue explaining to your kids killing and blowing things up are frowned upon. "You mean I have to be a responsible parent even while I watch movies? But the TV is much cheaper than the babysitter, come on!!"
How about we leave the film content up to the studios and filmmakers, and the parenting up to the parents.
They still have to make an official announcement regardless of whether we know it's coming or not. It is also a way for them to let us know what will actually be in it.
Who wouldn't wait for the 3D version? It was the only thing that made this movie stand out. Otherwise, it was just Dances With Ferngully and the Smurf Samurais.
Bottom line and the future will show it too, is that this movie is only demo material for your Blu-ray home theater. So why not just treat it as such - both y'all and the stupid, money hungry company FOX.
If you want the ultimate edition for this crappy movie (YES it is, compared to a LOT of iconic movies, even by Jim Cameron himself), then "stay tuned" and wait like a couple of years until they (tried) to milk every drop of this FLUKE. I'm getting less and less interested in buying this movie, but with all the releases to top it all off with, I'm to say at the least confused and bewildered. Also that the hype is still "goin' strong" for a movie like this. It's like "we have to love it - it was Jim's comeback for Christ sake!" and everyone who begs to differ is being shunned. I'm waiting for two things. For the sequel (yawn) and for Jim to finally sit his... butt down and focus on the Terminator movies on BD. Because THEY deserve re-releases and absolute top notch quality. All else is bull. Period. And trust me, FOX doesn't desperately need your (our) money to accomplish that or anything else.
people want to get this for less than $20?.. come on the cheapest the barebones was $14.99 from amazon for like 3 days only the rest had it for 19.99 for like a week or two. most places have it for $25-30 now. and i bet this one will go out of print like the first one has before it gets to $10.a SRP of $55 means it will be around $30 from amazon.
I think the idea of an audio track with bad language taken out is a fantastic idea and I wonder why more releases don't do that. evry film has one made for TV anyway.
I was just watching Point Break with my girlfriend's daughter the other day and I had never noticed before that like every other word is the F word.
The bare bones single disk release is all I care to have. The same goes for any work of art. If I bought a Picasso, I won't demand that I get copies of his sketches and notes too. I just want to see it and experience the emotions and feelings of the artist from his painting not from his notes or sketches. If I were a film maker or artist, then that would be a different story. I would indeed make it a study out of such things because it would be my profession. When I buy a BD player, HDTV, etc, am I going to ask for the white papers, production drawings, schematics, and details on how those were made and produced? Of course not. If I were an electronics engineer, well sure. That would be different. But I'm not. I simply want to enjoy it for what is. It concerns me very, very little how it was made or came to be.
"I think the family audio thing is a good idea, with a movie like this it's definitely going to attract attention of kids and nobody wants their kids hearing GD all the time or asking them what "limp dick" means lol i don't want to hear cussing that much either, shows lack of creativity when it's said a lot "
I find that fear of kids hearing "bad words" quite ridiculous, but ok, that's your prerrogative and any parent's in the house.
But if you don't want your children to be exposed to the language used in AVATAR, simply don't let them watch the movie. Period. Having the option of a censored audio track is fascistic and scary as hell, but then again, it's common practice on broadcast TV in the USA every day, of course. And that's quite scary, too.
How is lots of explosions, realistic violence, and intention of performing genocide for financial gain is fine for your nine year old but swearing is over the line?
Yeah, it's one of the weird quirks about our culture, that swear words are some magical malevolent force that will somehow extinguish a child's innocence, yet killing, graphic violence and/or misogyny is perfectly fine.
Heaven for fend our kids have a potty mouth while in the midst of a blood lust.
You Americans are way to uptight when it comes to Language and Sex. You have no problems with violence but someone says shit or shows a little skin and all of a sudden it's time for a "family friendly" version
Don't get me wrong, I think America is a great country, but up here in Canada that stuff doesn't bother us all too much
I used to buy "Special Editions" back in the days of dvd, but found that I never - or at least, very rarely - actually watched any of the extras.
So, for me, I'm happy to stick with my "bare-bones" blu-ray of this film. As for the extended version of the film, I think that the theatrical 2 hours 40 minutes cut is plenty long enough.
Three discs of content that are worth checking out...not even a DVD and Digital copy, just all Blu-ray. 3 versions, over 8 hours of bonus features... all this in one affordable price. Wow. This will be one hell of a Blu-ray package to own.
By that logic everyone in Central and South America are also Americans.
and everyone in the Middle East are Asians.
and Russians can be both Asian and European.
When you are generalizing based on continents, you might as well just label every one human.
