Warner to Back Blu-ray Exclusively
|
|

|
|
Warner has announced that they will be switching to support Blu-ray exclusively. Warner has been supporting both formats since they were launched, but recent talk from top executives suggested that Warner couldn't continue down that road much longer, and that the all important holiday sales would help them make a decision. With Blu-ray winning every week in high definition sales this year, Warner has decided that The Future is Blu.
"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.
Its all over folks!

This is truly awesome news if it is true. I really really really would like a source on this although I do trust that Josh would not post it if it was not 'for sure'. I just know HDDVD fans may make a fit over it.
The announcement must be coming very shortly for Josh to move on this now.
If it's all finally over.... wow. Just wow. Time to get on with our lives and enjoy some great films on Blu-ray.
Edit: Well, apparently after my post Josh added the quote and the Press Release. As suspected the announcement was not far away! Thank you, Josh!

HUGE, AWESOME news. Finally we can get Warner releases in optimised Blu-ray format. The other studios will surely have to follow Warner's lead as Warner can never shift from their new Blu-ray exclusive position in the future without looking like idiots, so we can look forward to fantastic high bitrate Blu-rays for all movies in the future.

After sweating for a couple of months (we all knew it could go either way but hedged our bets on blu), this is the BEST news to start off the new year. The format war, my friends, is over. Warner made a very wise choice to end this war, and that's what I predicted they would do on many threads here, it's pure business sense, if they went with hd-dvd, they would have split the studios and continued the war.
I am certainly going to enjoy the forums for the next week, just reading them will be a total gas. My hats off to you Warner for making a very wise choice. The hd-dvd fanboys all said it would be hd-dvd because Warner had released more titles, used the internet features and the interactivity. But I always felt Warner's decision would be based on the future, not what has happened with players so far. I think it helped to see $299 players, the institution of 1.1, and of course hd-dvd losing every week of the year including their biggest weeks, Transformers and Bourne week with the BOGO sale.
This made my day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so happy I yelled out a big YES and my mother, who is visiting, got worred that something was wrong (she's 2 floors up).

Well, thank God I didn't buy the new Samsung combi player bd-up5000. I was searching hard for one. I will spend the money on a nice blu stand-alone to compliment my PS3! (YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!) One other thing I didn't mention in my earlier post is the power of Disney to home video, and Warner surely took that into consideration.
I bet today is a very sad day for Toshiba and Universal, and mostly Paramount, because under contract for another 12 months to hd-dvd. How embarassing this must be for our "friends" at Paramount. Michael Bay must be laughing his ass off!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Warner Bros.!!!
So far anyway, this is the Blu-ray format story of the year.
There is just no other reasonable argument: BD is the superior hi-def format.
Hopefully, sooner rather than later, Paramount and Universal will see the writing on the wall and join Warner Bros. and the other studios and software suppliers who are supporting Blu-ray.
Again, thank you, Warner Bros.

On a serious note, I will add my agreement to those who are recommending that those of you have purchased or received a player in the "other format" to return it as quickly as possible, while the retailers will still honor their 30-day return policy. And be sure to trade for or buy a Blu-ray player or a PS3 machine.

First, thank you again for going Blu-only.
Next, I'm one of those movie fans who loves the old classics from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. I would love to see titles like "Casablanca", "The Maltese Falcon", "Mildred Pierce", and films from the great stars like Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Errol Flynn, Paul Muni, Edward G. Robinson, etc.
Line 'em up, WB, and I'll buy them, one and all. Hear that, WB? That's the sound of the cash register ringing even louder when you start releasing those older catalog titles...

Thank the sweet lord! I own both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD and can attest that Blu-Ray is by far the superior HD format. I'm so glad to hear this My HD-DVD player can get relegated to the few exclusive titles that will still be lingering around over the next year and after that, it's just a piece of legacy hardware haha. It's about time someone put one of the final nails in the coffin.

TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
Warner definitely made the right choice as it was the only correct choice anyways!!!
The only thing I ask from you now Warner is to please utilize BD to its full potential and make it worth my while as is everyone else's!!!

Yeaaaahhh!! The time has finally come to end this damn format war!! Now it is just a matter of time before Universal & Paramount decides enough is enough.
There is finally no more spinning to be done, seriously. If the red ants even try to spin this, I feel bad for them, since denial wouldn't even start to cover it...
To those of you who went dual format these past couple of months - NOW is the time to return your DUD player to WalMart, BestBuy or wherever you got it!! Not only will you get your hard earned dollars back, but even more important it will send a HUGE message to retailers that the DUD really is... a DUD.

I'm speechless. This is good and maybe even bad... Less competition (may mean) prices go up.. If thats the case, I won't be buying very many Blu-ray movies... This is coming from a huge movie fan.. 76 BD's right now and I JUST started.. Please don't let me (us) down BDA!! ;-)

I have enjoyed most everyone's comments. Glad that Blu-Ray Disk has proven out to be the winner. Sorry for Parramount who made that poor decision last year and now is stuck for 12 more months. I am sure Warner's decision to keep HD till May is due to the stuff they have in the pipe line for up coming sale and that is why they are not cutting off HD-DVD immediatley. Congratulations to all who have supported Blu-Ray now and forever. It is the better format.

Now don't all jump on me at once, but I am currently an HD-DVD boy with several Blu-Ray titles.
I don't have a BD player yet, and in all honesty I don't think many people will rush out and buy one
simply based on WB going exclusive. Don't get me wrong, I'm planning to fully support BD so I can get
the movies I want. I do however think that both Universal and Paramount will need to at least start
publishing in BD in order for the average consumer to start buying. On top of this, the disc prices also
need to come down to near DVD prices soon or else Warners snippet stating 'window of opportunity
for HD' will become reality and everyone will simply sit both formats out.
