New Line Shifts to Blu-ray Exclusivity

Posted January 5, 2008 10:45 AM by Lindsay Mayer

New Line CinemaFollowing Warner's lead, sister company New Line has confirmed that it will support Blu-ray Disc high def releases exclusively. New Line has previously delayed their day-and-date new releases on HD DVD due to the format's lack of region coding, effectively making titles such as Shoot 'em Up, Hairspray, and Rush Hour 3 exclusive to Blu-ray. Although a 2008 release slate for the studio has not been released, an announcement may be possible at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Thank you, New Line Cinema. Along with your sister company, WB, your Blu-ray exclusivity decision helps to bring a decisive conclusion to the hi-def war. The end is coming, and I can see the light!

Going forward, it looks like Paramount is locked into their "other format" support for a few more months.

But what about Universal? Universal: Isn't the writing now on the wall, big and clear and unmistakable? It's simply the logical business decision now that you should at least go format-neutral. You, Universal, have some great new and catalog titles that Blu-ray adopters like me would happily slap down our dollars on the counter for. Your decision, Universal, is inevitable. Why not make the call sooner rather than later?

alls i can say is

I've paid my dues -
Time after time -
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand kicked in my face -
But I've come through

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

I've taken my bows
And my curtain calls -
You brought me fame and fortuen and everything that goes with it
-
I thank you all -

But it's been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise -
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race -
And I ain't gonna lose -

We are the champions - my friends
And we'll keep on fighting - till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions - of the world -

All that matters is that LotR gets release to BluRay period. Exclusivity is great, but we really need to see this title announced soon. There are so many people that are such fanboys of LotR that they would buy a BR player just for LotR in HD. The same goes for Star Wars(if anything, it applies to SW moreso). Now that their is, in all practicality, only one format, hopefully Lucas will be compelled to give us Star Wars.

tru blu the article barely mentions it. You have to read it carefully, I almost missed it also.

"Warner's move leaves only Paramount and Universal squarely in the HD DVD camp. Sony, Fox, Disney and Lionsgate all back Blu-ray. Warner sister company New Line confirmed it will shift allegiance to Blu-ray only as well."

Its the 4th 'paragraph' in the article. The very last sentence of it. Kinda sneaky.

Hey All

Want a free Blu-Ray. All you have to do is go to www.blurayvt.com/mainPortal.php?page=home, sign up, listen to the information on what makes Blu-Ray better than HD-DVD and DVD...take a 17 question test and there you go. You then get to select a free DVD. It is for anyone who works for a retailer that sells Blu-Ray's. It is there way to make the retail staff move knowlegable about the differences between Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and DVD. Anyhow..here are the instructions:

1. Go to www.blurayvt.com/mainPortal.php?page=home
2. Sign up...list the retailer you work for
3. Go through the six sections of training
4. Take the test.
5. Then go back to the main page
6. Then click on back to main portal in the lower left corner
7. Click on the box on the lower right side.
8. Select your free movie and enter your address. There are 6 movies to choose from.
9. It takes 2-4 weeks to get your free movie.

Free $30 movie for 20 minutes of your time isn't too bad huh? You might even learn something...haha.

Anyhow...just wanted to let you all know.

This is the best news in a long time. This teamed with the warner bros. announcement are going to prove fatal wounds for hd. Hopefully a huge retail store (like amazon) announces blu ray exclusivity. That would be like the killing blow to hd dvd. Their supporters are probably hearing the echoings of the unreal tournament voice saying "Killing Spree" in their dreams. It feels good to have a collection of movies that are not going to be obsolete soon. Sorry hd dvd fans, you should have listened to us earlier.

@camaro17 well Microsoft has invested in about 140 companies world-wide, and NBC is one of them. NBC and Universal combined companies not to long ago to create NBC Universal. That would make Microsoft an investor of Universal so with that influence Microsoft kept Universal siding with HD-DVD. It is likely that Universal will be the last to make the Bluray jump.

But as far as a contract is concerned I would not be surprised if Microsoft/Toshiba and Universal had one seeing that they had one with Warner Bros (which will be done May 1,2008) and they made a contract with Paramount/Dreamworks.

I'm going to do some research to see if there really is a contract though and see when it is up.

This is the best news I have ever heard. New Line exclusive to Blu-ray. This means we are going to have some of the best horror franchises only on Blu-ray. You all know New Line Cinema is the house that Freddy built and the first Nightmare on Elm street started a couple of peoples career such as Johnny Depp. If there are a franchise that deserves a Blu-ray release its The Nightmare on Elm street collection and everyone knows it deserves it. Come on New Line you are my favorite studio, Bring the nightmares to Blu-ray.

I am so happy to see this happen. I work in the Custom AV business and have been visiting this site since 03. I have been on BD's side since day one and have been getting all of my clients on BD's side since Sammys BDP1000 released. I for one want Toshiba and Microsoft to gush $'s till the end for their ignorant choice to defy the industry. Didnt they learn from Beta's consumer market loss that the industry is bigger than any 1 or 2 major brands. Only Sony can put up a fight against the industry and make it interesting. Toshiba vs BDA.....Stupid! I dont want an aliance with HD DUD or there ignorant followers and that includes Integra who recently released a HD DUD player...Who waits this long to jump in on the losing side? Go Big Blu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sony only lost with Betamax due to the time VHS was out, this is what happens when Sony speed things up and release something new on time. Well Done BLU-RAY

Very good news indeed. In addition to Star Wars and LoTR, was Braveheart not also a New Line movie?
