This year, Warner Home Entertainment will bring the 25th Anniversary Edition of Full Metal Jacket to Blu-ray. Director Stanley Kubrick's gritty drama focuses on a group of young men both before and during their excursion into the Vietnam War.
While Warner has not yet detailed the technical specifications for this two-disc release, the studio will offer the following supplements:
Commentary with Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'onofrio, R. Lee Ermey, and screenwriter/author Jay Cocks
Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil behind-the-scenes featurette
Theatrical trailer
The 25th Anniversary Edition comes packaged inside a "44-page [Digibook] that include[s] a personal letter and intimate reflections from star Matthew Modine, as well as behind-the-scenes photos specifically selected for this release." Additionally, the set adds a DVD with the sixty-minute Stanley Kubrick's Boxes documentary which "sheds light on the genius and 'rhythm of the genius' at work".
Update: The new Full Metal Jacket Blu-ray Book will street on August 7th.
Is anyone else here as upset that I am about the absolutely putrid cover art for for this title? It looks like artwork that would be used for a Nintendo video game from the 80's....Atrocious. The original poster art is perfect! Why can't they get these kinds of things right?!?!?!?
Third time's a charm, I guess. (I think there's supposed to also be a digibook for Lolita coming up before too long, don't remember if it's this year or next.) I think WB's already milked me enough for Kubrick titles, though. Maybe when blu-ray is replaced by super-blu-ray and I upgrade to it for some crazy reason (like I finally win the lottery).
Man that's a tough decision. Normally I'd pass because I have the Kubrick Collection but...I love Digibooks and this includes Stanley Kubrick's boxes. May have to wait for a sale.
Probably be like the Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary edition, and feature the same transfer as the first set of Kubrick Blu's. If it was encoded at a high bitrate, I'd definitely double dip.
I'll be double-wait, triple dipping for this! I guess it was too much to hope that they would edit more making of footage from the hours and hours of footage that's sitting there collecting dust. At least there's some in the well made doc.
I'm hoping that there will be more bonus features than were on the last release. A short featurette and commentary.
Bring on Lolita's 50th digibook! That was bare bones so there has to be new stuff on there. Right? Sue Lyon interview?
I keep wishing that they would issue only the first half of this movie up to the point where the recruits graduate. That part is unforgettable mainly because of the performance of the D.I. The second part is hardly memorable. A typical anti-war war film.
Another digibook repackage. I'll get the same disc without the digibook for cheap when this drops. WB needs to stop repackaging and start remastering... Especially Goodfellas!!!
Not crazy about the cover either, but I've been putting off buying this one, and I'm a Digibook collector, so I'll probably grab this. Hopefully Warner doesn't crazy price this one like they did with the Unforgiven repack.
I also agree with the atrocious cover art. The poster was minimal, yet spoke so loud! I would only buy this if we were treated to deleted scenes, out takes, something to make it worth the double-dip other than a digibook. Repacking is the norm anymore for giving the buyer a disc they already own. Warner does seem to be a big offender in it. Just look at the Harry Potter Wizard's Collection. That moratorium was a joke, or a stunt to boost sales. But who is Warner really fooling? It has to be themselves, as any normal collector or movie fan would see this announcement, lean back in their chair, and laugh. . . loudly.
I don't care about the cover one way or another, just the transfer and the content on the disc. If this is a new transfer, I'm tempted to spring for it. By my count this is the third time it has been released on Blu (not counting existing versions being placed in box sets.)
Damn. I was thinking "pass" until I saw that it includes Stanley Kubrick's Boxes. I love that documentary. I'm not even that big a fan of Full Metal Jacket but I might double-dip just for the doc.
It's funny, if I'm not interested in something I see here I just click on something else. Why do people feel the need to share their negative opinions on every friggin' release? These anniversary releases are for FANS of the movie or film makers. Go click on something else and comment.
Was just going to wait for this one but I got tired of waiting and picked up the most recent Blu super cheap. Double dipping is not an option as I have already dipped 5 or 6 times on this title. Plus it looks like it will be a dreaded digibook!
Frame on top is from current BD, at the bottom is the same frame taken from the documentary "Turning like clockwork" included in the 40th anniversary edition.
Difference in detail and grain structure is stunning.
