Blu-ray Hardware Sales Pick Up After Warner Announcement

Posted January 22, 2008 08:39 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray DiscA new NPD Group report shows that stand-alone Blu-ray player sales benefited greatly from the recent announcement that Warner would be going Blu-ray exclusive. The first week of January, before Warner made their announcement, there was a nearly 50-50 split between Blu-ray and HD DVD standalone players. The following week, after the announcement, Blu-ray players grabbed 93% of the market.

On the whole, December sales data showed that Blu-ray players held 60% of the standalone market, despite much cheaper players from the HD DVD camp. Looking at only the first two weeks of January, Blu-ray already has a nearly 70% market share which is sure to increase as the month continues and consumers continue to chose Blu-ray over its rival format.

And then there are us BEGGING for the PS3 numbers to be factored in... heck, let them keep the XBOX 360 HD-DVD add-on sales.

Great to hear. I hope Paraversal is listening to the news. And I am sure those 6k petitioners are
going to feel dumb when they hear how dead HD DVD is!

Let's get a reliable profile 1.1 player under $200 and we'll be ready to bury HD-DVD once and for all.

Great!

With the new cheaper players from China coming soon this trend will grow even further, I hope DVD sales will decline drastically this year coinciding with the rise of Blu-Ray!!!

Since the Warner announcement I've converted a total of four people at work. The last just told me yesterday morning that he's got an 80gb PS3 on order and wanted to know what else he should buy. All four are replacing their HD-DVD stand-alone players.

Did Blu-Ray stand-alone sales actually increase (i.e., "pick up" as the title implies) or did HD DVD sales just drop dramatically? If Blu-Ray sales didn't increase, then the article title needs to be changed to something that is actually accurate.

OH MY GOD!!! REALLY!? I NEVER would have thought that having a MAJOR studio such as Warner Brothers would actually INCREASE sales for whichever side they pick. Imagine that. I mean, I thought, for certain, HD-DVD sales would sky-rocket as soon as Warner went Blu-Ray exclusive.

Seriously folks: What did you expect to happen? These "articles" are starting to simply state the obvious.

You guys want to know what is cool, two weeks ago my roommate’s dad came to may apartment and
he saw my PS3, and he said wow, you have a Blu-ray player. And two day later he bought a high-end
Sony Blu-ray player with 15 films (not the free ones). Then I said, wow.

Still wating for a good profile 2.0 stand alone. $300 or less please. Enough with the $400 and $500 players. We've got HD-DVD beat but if we want to stand a chance at bringing all standard DVD users to the Blu $400/$500 hardware prices ain't gonna do it. (You listening Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony)?

As a PS3 owner, and first time poster, I have to quote William Shatner from his skit on Saturday Night Live and say: "Get a life people! I mean, it's just a disc format for God sakes!". I like watching my Blu-ray discs, but this isn't a website, it's a cult. I'm outta here!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've noticed at work that Blu players are selling a whole lot more now. People that were not sure what to buy are going Blu, and those that were waiting are finally deciding to buy Blu players cause they feel the "format war" is over. ...which it is, Go Blu!!

People buying Blu-ray hardware is always a good thing, but what is the over/under for Paramount, Universal, and Dreamworks joining team Blu-ray before Warner completes it's transition? Any takers?
