Updated Warner Release Slate for 2008 and Beyond

Posted February 7, 2008 01:33 PM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Bros. Our good friends over at The Digital Bits were able to squeeze Warner for a little more information about some of the catalog titles expected to be released on Blu-ray this year. The current goal is to release a Blu-ray version of any catalog film day-and-date with a Special Edition DVD release. This will take some time to implement, but they hope to get that policy up-and-running by the end of the summer.

Without further delay, here is the updated list of titles announced by Warner for Blu-ray release.

08Q1

08Q2

08Q3

08Q4

  • A Christmas Story: Ultimate Collector's Edition
  • Otis: Uncut

2008

2009

As you can see, those missing Warner titles which have been released on HD DVD but not Blu-ray are still coming - including 'The Matrix' trilogy.

Warner is discovering that many catalog titles don't have transfers which are good enough for Blu-ray release, including 'Clash of the Titans' (which has been delayed for restoration) and 'Heat' (which Michael Mann has just agreed to supervising a new 1080p transfer). Rest assured, Warner will continue to scrutinize every release to ensure it looks and sounds as good as possible before being released to the public.

Speaking of audio, Warner has heard your cries, and they will start releasing all high definition titles with lossless audio. Obviously, the switch to Blu-ray exclusivity makes this move easier, as the format has much more storage and bandwidth.

Additionally, any Warner catalog title you hear that is receiving 4k restoration will get a Blu-ray release. Warner spent years mastering their catalog at 1080i, and they are now having to do new masters in order to get a perfect transfer. Some catalog titles will receive 4k restoration (four times the size of 1080p), and any title you hear receiving this treatment will get a Blu-ray release

Remember, these are just a taste of what's coming from Warner this year, and there is still a bunch of titles planned for release that they are holding under their jacket, not to mention all the new release titles. But even with the list we have today, its shaping up to be a great year for Blu-ray fans.

[In The Rock's voice] "Finally...The Matrix, has come back, to end, the hi-def war!" Glad to see that's finally coming to the blu side of things. Here's looking at "blu" with Casablanca, but I don't know how a black and white movie that's around 70 years old is going to fare on BD. Can anyone tell me how the HD DVD version fared? Also I believe that Warner doesn't "give a damn" for HD DVD as we all know Gone with the Wind is going BD only. The only thing I'll probably pass on the Batman Anthology is Batman and Robin. What a horrid, horrid movie, It's just too garish, uninspired and don't get me started on the script. Looks like we'll be seeing big daddy V (not the wrestler, the movie character) soon enough. I also like to know, wheres the two Chocolate Factory movies and the Robin Hood movie (1930's)?

Willy Wonka was originally mastered in 1080i
and Warner did a conversion for the title to 1080p for it's HD-DVD release, that was less than stellar...so I'm guessing they want to make that one a little better since
it's such a high profile catalog title.

As for V for Vendetta, and Matrix it's about time! :-)

I'm assuming that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
will be coming very soon, along with the other Profile 1.1 titles.

The main titles I am still wondering about
are Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest...
They were originally announced last summer for February 2008 on BR & HD-DVD in a press release from Warner shown in Video Business and on HighDefDigest...and yet there is no mention of them here. I hope they haven't dissapeared forever. The idea of Amadeus on Blu-Ray is what prompted me to buy a player...It's my favorite movie.

One thing that worried me about the Digital Bits posts
was that it said that Warner isn't firm on a release date for the
Batman Anthology (the Burton/Schu-crapper) films.

I really hope the arrive this year...
I would love to get it as a Christmas present!

And from what I read, I think that it said that Clash of the Titans
would be delayed past this year because of a quality issue.
The post above would suggest otherwise....did I read it wrong?

YES!!! I am very, very ecstatic about this list of '08 releases, plus the word that there are many more coming! Like I've said before, I know many of the newer releases have a lot of attraction because they're full of dazzling visual effects and sound effects, but the classics, like "Casablanca", are great, too. So, I'm happy to see a bunch of older "catalog" classics in there. I hope the other studios follow with more classics, as well...

Warner has done very well in partially forcasting up to 2009 just to instil confidence to the Blu camp.

Either Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal (who's exclusive contract is over) are stupid or being carful with the legal aspects of going Blu but they better get it together soon and join the rest of the world.

The best thing will be that the ones already released on HD-DVD will be re-encoded for Blu and not just some port. Then we can finally have visual proof that Blu is better because it has higher capacity and a larger bandwidth.

This has been the best news, all of these titles, some of the major classics in their library, and especially the addition of lossless audio on all blu-ray titles. That made me jump up and cheer. This means that every studio releasing on blu-ray is releasing all titles with lossless audio. Very very cool. CFount me in for such titles as Gigi, Ben Hur, How the West was Won, Batman, Dirty Harry, American in Paris, Mutiny on the Bounty, oh heck, I want most of what they announced. Plus Twister, wow what a year it's going to be!!!! I better order a few extra bulbs for my projector hehe.

I do hope they correct the problem of lack-of-lossless sound on such titles as The Lake House, Phantom of the Opera, Battle of the Bulge, Ant Bully, Superman: The Movie and the Donner cut, Happy Feet and many of the others that only had Dolby Digital 5.1.

happy feet got a lossless dolby true hd over here in the UK, and so did flags of our fathers, although our version was only 1 disc, not a 2 disc set like in the US.

2009 marks the 70th Anniversary of Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, should both be very impressive packages!

Fantastic news! I check this web site on a daily basis just
to see if a release date for The Matrix Trilogy has been
posted. Its nice to know that its definitely coming at
some point this year. Just please don't release it in
December! June, July at the latest. Get to work people!
