Best Buy to Officially Recommend Blu-ray to Customers

Posted February 11, 2008 03:50 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray DiscBeginning in early March, retailer Best Buy will begin officially recommending Blu-ray as best choice for high definition movies to their customer base. Since the beginning of the format war, Best Buy has silently stood on the sidelines providing both the Blu-ray and HD DVD format for consumers to choose. Current sales data now shows that Blu-ray is their choice, and the retailer will soon carry the official stance that Blu-ray is best high definition format.

Brian Dunn, Best Buy's president and chief operating officer commented, "Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We've listened to our customers, and we are responding. Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as the preferred format. Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them."

Best Buy will continue to stock a reduced amount of HD DVD players and movies, but the reduction in stock combined with the unified voice to support Blu-ray brings up questions as to how long those stocks will continued to be resupplied.

YES! The next best thing to dropping HD DVD, Best Buy will just Promote Blu-ray over HD DVD. I
hope they just let HD DVD sales drop and let it die on its own.

AHhh, no one buys HD DVD's from Best Buy anyway. This is actually good for HD DVD since now more people will buy from mom and pop stores that all of the sudden will have a good reason to stock HD DVD's and, boom, up goes the economy, wars are ended, and everyone will want to purchase HD DVD's. HD DVD will prevail!!

The trickling effect will eventually show in even smaller areas this trend, but right now the smaller areas are still split 50/50. That being said, I'm glad to see they have finally shown a sign of changing. I've noticed even in the smaller markets that the sales associates have been recommending Blu-ray, but it's good to know that it will be OFFICIAL beginning in March.

Now, we just need the rest of the Studios to jump aboard.

Russell_L,

Universal will be the last to cave in. The president of Universal, Craig Kornblau, has openly stated that he likes the format war. I actually believe he likes it. But he claims that he's prolonging the format war for the good of the consumers, because it supposedly drives prices down. I personally think that he's holding out for a big $$$ offer from the Blu-ray camp.

This is exactly what I have been expecting to happen, first the retailers/renters will go "Blu" one by one and this movement will ultimately force Universal and Paramount to start releasing on Blu-ray. While it will still take some time for all things to fall into place, I am very confident that this war is already over and now we just have to be patient and let things take their time.

For over a year I have been in these forums listening to:

1. Hd-dvd will win, the players are finalized and they have the great ethernet and interactivity
2. The price of hd-dvd players winning the war is a no-brainer
3. The sound of a Dolby Digital Plus soundtrack on hd-dvd is just as good as a PCM or DTSMA on blu.
4. Warner will go with hd-dvd
5. You blutards are going to have your foot in your mouth

need I go on? We've all read it. So with all the advantages hd-dvd supposedly had, isn't it something that people prefer blu-ray. Hd-dvd fans underestimated the public. They thought that they could not tell the difference between the quality of the 2 formats. Well, look at the state of things now!!!!!

When one of the biggest mass consumer electronics retailers says it's over for the "other format", that really is like "a nail in the coffin". Just repeating what I said earlier regarding the Netflix announcement, it's now "Game over!", and Blu is the decisive, unquestioned winner.

I believe if one of the biggest retailers in the US announced their exclusive support to Blu-ray, the other would follow in a minute.

f-best buy. who cares what they think. OH...NOW is when they decide to take a stance? Way to lead from the very very back best buy....oooops i meant follow. best buy is the wal-mart of it's store classification...it smells funny inside, full of morons and sells cheap crap...why did this make it into the "news" section? It would have been news had it been reported like a year ago. Best buy is just another smack filled syringe stuck in the arm of the average consumer...way to go best buy and way to go average consumer for keeping them in business. they dont "just stop" hddvd because believe it or not there are still enough zombie consumers out there buying it and places like best buy selling it to them.

It still amazes me that HD DVD is still standing. I have a Google News alert for Blu-ray and I'm shocked that there are still articles asking 'Which side will win?' I can't believe that anyone, even the most ardent HD DVD owner now thinks that format has any future. Good news from Best Buy, but if they had any real conviction they would simply stop stocking HD DVD. I wonder how it will work in practice. If someone comes in asking for a HD DVD player, will they do their best to not sell it to them and say they should buy Blu-ray? If that's what they they are going to do why even stock HD DVD?

This is great news. Even though I would never buy hardware at best buy, or future shop etc. they do have a great selection in Blu Movies though.

this will get me going for the day.

The Netflix Goes Blu-ray Exclusive is a major win for Blu...this BB thing is a minor. The key here folks is the word EXCLUSIVE. BB needs to drop HDDVD already. As I've read a few later posts, it's telling once you let the news sink in and look back at what they really are saying. BB is simply "talking-the-talk", now lets see if they can "walk-the-walk" and do the HD industry a real service, and go Blu Exclusive. Actions ALWAYS speak louder than words - and never more so in this case. Here's another cheer for Netflix!

Why won't HD-DUD just die already!

I hope Best Buy goes completely Blu very soon.

It's clear that consumers and businesses alike are getting tired of this pointless format war, and they're putting their foot down! The future is definitely Blu!

Alright, great day for the Blu side. Sucks to own and HD-DVD player now. With all of these big
companies going Blu, Paramount and Universal will have no choice but to jump ship and switch to the
Blu.
