The downloaded .exe file will produce an .iso file (UPDATE_BDPS1_ver0150.iso) that you burn as an image disk onto a blank DVD media. If you don't have any burner software you can download it for free here http://www.imgburn.com/
The instructions for the Sony Blu-ray player say that the dvd has to be finalized (after being burned). I can't finalize the dvd after burning the Sony upgrade on to the dvd disc ( I've tried dvd-r and dvd -rw). I've tried Sonic and Roxio burning software. I then downloaded imgburn like Iceman suggested. My second question is where is the button on imgburn to finalize. Thanks,
How does one update the firmware if you don't have Window's computers? I use Mac. I don't understand Sony's backwards thinking. They have done this with all of their products. Granted Sony builds and sells their own computer but shouldn't they support their equipment with all computer software?

dont load firmware 3.7 into the bdps1e sony blu ray player as it cause the player to lose audio decoding of dolby true hd in full and pcm audio it reverts back to dolby digital and sony will not admit this so who knows if they will fix it in future firmware if they will not admit fault
They should really put a link for the "Please read the firmware update instructions before updating." description because i was looking for the instructions for about 40 min and still no luck can someone please post a link i don't know why but i had no trouble in the past finding the instructions. thanks
Firmware 4.20 is now available; I just learned today from Sony inquiring on playback difficulty with
the MGM title Live and Let Die, which did not respond to navigation of any sort from the opening
movie menu.
Why is Blu-ray.com not indicating the current updates? This would seem relatively simple and to be
expected from such a site if so much resource.
My thanks to MFMOTA for the Sony Support Site link; very helpful.
Be careful, the information that "Najeeb" has provided is only for the BDP-S300, not the BDP-S1. Do not download and attempt to flash your BDP-S1 with the build that "Najeeb" has indicated. If you try to flash this build onto the BDP-S1, it is a good bet, your blu ray player will have to be shipped for repairs.
I just successfully updated my BDP-S301. For all who are interested, here's how I did it. I first found the problem when The Hulk II wouldn't work and then today when Hell Boy II wouldn't work I went to this website. I downloaded the file provided on this website called UPDATE_BDPS301_VER0430.EXE onto my Windows computer. I ran this executable and it asked me to choose a location to drop the resulting file. I entered a location in My Documents and it created a file called UPDATE_BDPS301_VER0430.ISO This file is an ISO image file that you can use to burn a CD. Notice I said CD not DVD. Despite what some people said above, this required a blaink CD-R disk and did not work with a blank DVD-R disk. I used Nero to burn the disk. In Nero there was an option in the "Copy and Backup" section called "Burn Image to Disk". I put a CD-R disk in, made sure to select the Verify Data option and let it rip. After labeling the disk. I turned on my Sony BDP-S301 Blu-Ray player and when it finaly powered up, I opened the drive and dropped this CD in. On my TV the message said "Loading" while on the Player, the display said DISC DWLD. After a minute or two or three the disk player rebooted itself. I thought it was done at this point, but this is just the beginning. The display then went through a series of message that took about 10 minutes I would guess. Here are the messages in order:
DISC-DWLD (with hyphen blinking)
DATA CHECK / DOWNLOAD (messages alternating)
WRT FLASH1 / DOWNLOAD (about 2 or 3 minutes)
WRT FLASH2 / DOWNLOAD (I would say 8 minutes)
WRT DRIVE (maybe 5 seconds)
WRT SUBCON / DOWNLOAD (1 or 2 minutes)
DL OK (finaly!!) and at this point, the Disk ejects itself.
I took out the disk, closed the door and it rebooted.
When it came up everything was fine and I was able to Play the Hell Boy II movie. Whew!!

NOTE: After flashing the firmware, allow the unit to completely power down, then power up the system. Once you have the system power turned on and the unit is ready to insert a disc (do not insert a blu ray disc at this time), instead press and hold down the STOP button and then press the power button at the same time until the unit powers off (hard reset).
Problem: After the firmware flash had completed, the unit by default goes into standby mode, but does not power off. If you insert a disc into the unit, you might see problems in loading the blu ray. I have noticed the blu ray disc attempt to load, while several messages would appear saying that no connection can be detected. If experiencing similar problems, follow the instructions above to reset the unit to factory default. For some reason, after flashing the v5.10 firmware, I have notice this to be a problem with both my blu ray players which are the same model.
Once you are confident the blu ray disc can load without any problems, eject the disc and then advance to the blu ray SYSTEM SETUP to reconfigure your player’s settings. After a hard reset, if there are any settings that were configured before the hard reset, they are blown away. So you’ll have to reconfigure your player’s video and audio settings to match your AV setup.
