I got home a little early today due to the pending holiday weekend, and to my surprise and happiness, sitting at my front door was a package from Universal containing their first four Blu-ray titles. In my hands, and pictured after the jump, is 'The Mummy: Deluxe Edition', 'The Mummy Returns: Deluxe Edition', and 'The Scorpion King' all scheduled to be released July 22nd, as well as 'Doomsday' which is due a week later on July 29th.
Needless to say, we here at Blu-ray.com are thrilled not only that Universal is releasing Blu-ray titles, but also that we have the opportunity to review these great films.
You're a lucky man, Josh! I can't wait to see those titles in my Blu-ray collection, especially the Mummy movies and Doomsday! As far as The Scorpion King goes, I could take it or leave it.
I really wanna see how the Universal intro is. For HD DVD they had the Universal logo kinda turn into the HD DVD logo so I wanna know if it's gonna be the same thing except turn into the Blu-Ray logo.
Let see if they blu-ray transfer can match with some of their rival, i heard their HD DVD trasnfer is not great, hope they did better job in BD, their box said perfect Hi-Def? that's been to high standard.
Man, why couldn't they have been released...oh I don't know....like today! Along with most others, these are a must have for my household. Your a lucky man Josh!
Damn Josh, talk about a good 4th of July Blu-ray celebration. When can we all come over to grab a beer, BBQ and watch some Universal Blu-rays!!!!! I've had the two Mummy movies on pre-order. Will probably get Scorpion King and Doomsday used.....
Nice to see Uni admit that Blu is "The Perfect Hi-Def Movie Experience". Did they come all nice and fanned-out like that in the box? Because that's how I want Amazon to ship from now on.
OMG!!! SLIPCOVERS! (I love slipcovers, just to let you know) Josh could you take some pics of the
inside of the case/ disk art as well? And of course sample the movies a little.
Josh all the hard work you do around this place, good for you that you get these titles 3 weeks+
before the general public. Enjoy em, and let us know how they look.
slipcovers ftw! I didn't know we were getting movie cash too! Awesome. Josh- Be sure to post up a review at the earliest convenience. I'm sure were psyched to know if there's inside artwork and also what the disks themselves have on them.
What are the menu's like on the Universal releases? Are they movie specific or generic like the HD DVD's from Universal? Also does Universal use an opening logo that transforms into the Blu-ray logo. Like they did for HD DVD?
My God... slow news day??? First, a story about the theft of some discs from a retailer, then a story about actually having some long-announced titles in-hand.
Nothing against Josh (or anyone else) but sometimes its best to just post nothing... rather than trying to create news out of nothing.
Nice to know that Uni took the 'deluxe' route with slipcovers for their initial releases! Will be anxiously
awaiting the reviews. Any bets on how Josh will be spending his 4th of July weekend? ;-)
haters and nay sayers- If you look at the history of all the other posting on here looks as if Josh is one of the main if not THE contributor on this site so I would say that it is his perogative to post here or the forums. Personally I would like to hear how they turned out on blu as all four have been on my amazon wish list.
I am a little concerned with the "amatuerish" news postings on this website. I stumbled across Blu-ray.com by simply typing in the obvious address. Since I had just acquired a player and a new plasma HDTV I was curious about the sites out there. This one seemed ligitimate and professional. I generally like the reviews but am beginning to wonder about some of the "writers".
There were three "news" posts today that were particularly suspect. All were posted by "Josh" by the way. The first one I read was about a picture of a box of four Blu-ray discs shipped out from the studio for basic reviews. Why was this a "news" post? I understand that it was the first Universal push onto BRD. That's fine. Post a review. Not a picture of the shipment to your door. This is so bush-league and smacks of amatuerism. I don't get the impression that any professional writer, aspiring or otherwise, would have any need for such a self inflating post.
The second post was about a theft of six Blu-ray discs from a retail store. This is the news I get from Blu-ray.com? There are bigger and more news worthy robberies of Blu-ray everyday in the US. I do not come to Blu-ray.com for such random "news" anyway. Can the time spent posting about crimes be spent on actual news about the Blu-ray discs I intend to buy and watch? What a waste of energy.
The final post I read today was an "op-ed" piece about Josh's hatred of the movie theater and how much he loves his home theater system. This was far from a hard hitting investigative report. It was a simply editorial about how bad the presentation for Wall-e was at his local movie theater and how the sound on his own home theater was so much better. What does this have to do with anything? What is the intent? To convince Blu-ray.com readers to stop going to the movies because he personally goes to a bad theater in town? It was decidedly one sided and misinformed.
Regardless I am curious about the credentials of the writers/critics here. Whose voices are these? Is this site even ligitimate? From the three afformentioned news posts I am beginning to wonder. Is the guy that takes pictures of the studios BD sitting at his door or bashing movie theaters the guy I should trust to tell me about the quality of Batman Begins on Blu-ray? I go to Aint-it-cool for the goofy amatuer posts. I would home I could go to Blu-ray.com for some buttoned down professionalism.
Geofruben, before you start bashing our news editor, you should look at the overwhelming number of fantastic news post on this site. Josh and the rest of the news editors and reviewers work their asses off so that we can get the latest and greatest news from the world of blu-ray. Don't be a hater unless you have some great and unannounced news to report yourself. Personally, I am grateful for all of their hard work and they should keep it up. Lastly, if you don't like what you see, you can politely go somewhere else. No one is forcing you to visit this site!!!
So when will we be able to read the reviews about htese discs. You posted 2 other reviews after the news you had these discs.
I think almost of of the readers would heva preferred a review of the Mummy movies instead
@Josh: Great! Thanks for sharing. Buy a LG BH-200, great player and you can Switch the Region Code on it without a hack. PC Blu-ray drives also aren't that expensive anymore.
I think most if not a lot of your readers agree with the following remark
Who gives a f#*? about reviews on discs like Witless protection or the moody blues when it means that we have to wait on your opinion on the Mummy blu ray movies.
You had them now for 5 -6 days, when can we finally read the reviews.
