Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. There’s a lot riding on X-Men: First Class, mostly because it’s a very expensive prequel positioned to either make or lose its parent company, 20th Century Fox, lots and lots of money but also because prequels are such a dicey proposition, weighty with expectation and years of prebuilt mythology (especially when dealing with a comic book series as fabled as this). The approach seems to have been: let’s take things back but not get too caught up in the mythos as to ruin the fun.
