All I have to say is I am getting best of both worlds with both high definition formats. The price point is right. I Canada, it retails for $399. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
It also solved the BOND issues as well.....thanks for the info on another upgrade...I will look for it!! Still don't know why this website isn't updating the fireware info on this player...I love this player!!
Just updated to the new firmware, 1.4, and I am happy to report that for the first time since I
bought this player I am finally seeing the Dolby True HD logo on my receiver. Awesome! And, I
am happy with this player, no problems so far.
Okay there is a sad note here for the moment. The exelent movie Wall-E has a problem. You are going to experience audio drop outs during the movie this is not your copy that is defective or your player simply a firmware probleme.
Samsung is reporting working on a new firmware to correct the problem as well as with other titles from Universals that have different issues.
There is an update of the 1.4 firmware that is not showing on the canadian site the latest is december 2008 but the latest firmware on the site is for november 2008.
Don't hesitate to contact Samsung so they can send you the latest update.
By the way I found a trick to have any disc that cannot be played to be played.
As soon as you get an error 0x000000ff just turn off the machine with the disc still in it. Then turn it on. I had an issue with the movie : The Last Holliday and had it played that way. If I eject it and try to load it normaly there is no way to have it played.
I got missinformed by Samsung there is no updates for firmware 1.4. So be patient (definetly really patient) and wait for the new update 1.5 I hope. In the meanwhile I got some titles that had a problem to play, in addition to the last holliday and every time I was able to play them with the trick of turning off the player and turning it on with the disc inside so don't hesitate to try it.
If the 1.3 version has been made available on May 30, 2008 and if version 1.4 was made availaible Nov 6, 2008 it means that you could have to wait until 6 mounths so do not expect an update before May 2009 unless a big surprise.
Wall-E works fine for me in every way, and that was even before I got the latest firmware update. Also, if you go to www.samsung.com instead of .ca, you can get the latest firmware update there....download it, burn it to a dvd and dump it...works like a charm...and worked great for me
Gosh another movie that gives me a problem. "A Time to Kill" as a probleme to start, after many trial and a long loading the movie plays fine until 1:31:00 approximatly the movie stops and nothing. In fact it seems that the player refuses to play the second layer where is the rest of the movie. An upgrade of the firmware of this player is really needed and as the Samsung sites have been updated this february, I have been informed that if a new firmware is finished they will post it only at the next update of the site in 4 to 6 weeks. I still love this player but Samsung is very slow to bring firmeware upgrade.
Any word on version 1.5? Samsung tech support can’t tell me anything. I can’t play Max Payne, Transporter 3 or The Punisher. Basically the last 3 Blu-rays I rented I couldn’t watch. A little frustrated!
As of yesterday, Samsung has no idea as to when we will get a new firmware update. Though I am still very happy with my player, it is obvious that some issued need to be addressed, and soon. Is there any way to put any pressure on Samsung? Thank you
About a Time to Kill it was a probleme with the player and they fixed it, it was du to an internal probleme. Now for Max payne, transporter 3, the punisher they play well should have this player checked.
No firmware updates yet, I contacted Samsung and they are still working on it. I must admit that most of my problems are with BD titles only. As far as HD DVD is concerned I never had any playback problem. By the way you want to get HD DVD titles at a good price go to www.intevideo.com HD DVD for $3 wow.

After having spoken with a Samsung representative for about 1 hour, I have the feeling that no more updates will be available for this model. This is indeed upsetting.
I don't think they will stop. It is tru that doesn't look good but I beleive mostly that because this player is an Hybride one this could create probleme with the firmware they have to make sure that this player still can play HD DVD's without problems and with the the actual firmware HD DVD menus are slower with version 1.4 that with version 1.3. I just hope that they won't give up. Up to now I didn't get a major playback problem with version 1.4. By the way, I don't think putting pressure on Samsung is a good idea as it is risky they could do it or stop completly but putting pressure to continue on trying would be a better approach.
