Ignor the "Read Me" file that comes zipped with this update. It has some poor, convoluted instructions.
Just unzip the file and put the update file on a USB drive. Don't put the file in a folder, place it on the top level (root directory) of the USB drive. If you put the file in a folder the player wont find the update.

I just got this player over the weekend and I can't seem to get any of my Blu-ray movies to work. So to update the player, I just need to download the firmware to a USB drive, correct?

I bought the HP21 yesterday and a The Dark Knight BD. The player would not play the BD even after the 11/6/08 software update. I called Sharp this AM, they added the movie to their "will not play" list and said they would call me back in a few days. What a letdown. This is my first BD player and my first experience with Sharp HDTV. I plan to purchase an "older" BD today and see if that one works.....

I'm VERY disappointed with this player. Bought it about two month ago and have had three movies I
purchased don't play. Narnia upset me the most as my two kids were really looking forward to it.
I contacted Sharp and was told they are aware of the problems and that a firmware was forthcoming.
That was a month ago. Still nothing. Waste of $300......
Going to check out the Panasonic one mentioned above. I know that Costco has a Sony model. I
may look at it as well. | |

If you have the Sharp BD-HP21, you cannot watch the Slumdog Millionaire BD until you get the March 13, 2009 update. I got the movie new and knew nothing was wrong with the disc, but it wouldn't play. After I updated the player with this new firmware, it worked.

To all those who have previously posted to this thread, PLEASE update your SHARP BD-HP21 Bluray players to Firmware PN9022700. This should hopefully resolve most if not all of the problems with the Disney movies not playing. With this update I am now finally able to play both the Narnia movies 1 and 2. I went thru all of the bluray titles I have to date to make sure they all play on the SHARP BD-HP21 Bluray Player and they all do.
Below is the list of movies that do work on this Bluray player: Amadeus, Young Frankenstein, Transformers 1, Top Gun, Patriot Games, The Passion of the Christ, Hunt For Red October, Short Circuit 1, Purple Rain, Rambo 1, The Last Emperor, Kung Fu Hustle, King Kong (Peter Jackson), The Fugitive, Glory, A Few Good Men, Enemy of the State, Die Hard 2, Dark City, The Truman Show, Bruce Almighty, 8 Mile, CJ7, PIXAR's Cars, The Forbidden Kingdom, Disney's Pinocchio, The Princess Bride, Superman The Movie, Superman 2 - Richard Donner version, TMNT, and PIXAR's WALL-E.

I've updated to Firmware PN9022700. I'm still having issues with certain Blu-Ray Discs. I just tried putting in Fool's Gold and only got 6 minutes into it before my first problem. I first encountered a problem when my wife wanted to watch Bride Wars and it just kept on getting more and more pixelated and eventually just stopped working therefore freezing the whole unit. I updated the firmware at that time and Bride Wars worked just fine. But I'm kind of tired of getting movies from Netflix just for them to NOT work..... I hope they get a new firmware out soon!

I still have one of these players - just finished updating the firmware but in a different sequence..
1) download zip file from "country of origin" - Canada, United States, etc
2) unzip file - it should have a .rvp extension, load into a usb as others have suggested - not in a file folder
3) Insert USB into blu-rau player as specified
4) Select setup - then select factory resets ( get a copy of owners manual), player will shut down, auto reset in progress - it automatically "pulls" info off the usb - asking you to select which update - select the new one. It will run the update exe.
5) Check your settings, etc....your done!
