Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 22-28: The Good Dinosaur Evades Spectre

Posted March 4, 2016 02:28 PM by Josh Katz

Blu-ray DiscFor the week that ended on February 28th, Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's The Good Dinosaur went to the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. An animated adventure about the friendship between a scared dinosaur and a feral caveboy, The Good Dinosaur failed to make the commercial and critical impact of the studios' Academy Award-winning hit Inside Out. The film only grossed about $122 million domestically, and it also didn't connect strongly with critics, generating an unspectacular a 66% Metacritic score. This week, The Good Dinosaur had a Blu-ray market share of 50%.

Next on the Blu-ray-only chart was Sony and MGM Home Entertainment's Spectre. The most recent James Bond thriller - and the third collaboration between star Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes - Spectre struggled to live up to the expectations that its predecessor Skyfall created. While the film was a solid commercial performer for its studios, grossing over $879 million worldwide on an estimated $245 million budget, it didn't connect as strongly with critics, who responded to the tune of a 60% Metacritic score. On the Blu-ray-only list, Spectre had a Blu-ray market share of 57% and sold 12% as many Blu-rays and 10% as many total units as The Good Dinosaur.

Finally, Universal and Open Road Home Entertainment's Spotlight rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray-only chart. Writer/director Tom McCarthy's journalism procedural was a major critical success for its distributors. Even though the modestly budgeted feature only grossed $39 million domestically, it was a huge hit in the eyes of critics, who helped it net not only a 93% Metacritic score but also two Academy Awards: Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. In terms of the Blu-ray-only rankings, Spotlight had a Blu-ray market share of 48% and sold 6% as many Blu-rays as The Good Dinosaur while on the overall package-media list, the Oscar winner came in fourth place (behind Warner's gangster thriller Black Mass) and also sold 6% as many total units as the newest Pixar feature.

I'm just glad that Spectre and the Good Dinosaur are the top two selling Blu-rays. Since I'm both a James Bond and Disney fan.
