Blu-ray Sales, September 9-15: Ocean's 8 Steals Home-Media Title

Posted September 23, 2018 10:04 AM by Josh Katz

Blu-ray Disc
For the week that ended on September 15th, Warner Home Entertainment's Ocean's 8 debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. A female-centric installment in the Ocean's 11 franchise, this light heist-comedy was a modest success this summer. The film scored decent critical notices (it has a 61% Metacritic score), and it went on to gross over $139 million domestically on top of its estimated $70-million production budget. This week, the film had a Blu-ray market share of 50%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Deadpool 2. The much-anticipated follow-up to Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds' 2016 smash hit, this raunchy action-comedy proved almost as successful as its predecessor. Deadpool 2 garnered fine critical notices (note its 66% Metacritic score) and grossed over $734 million worldwide on top of its estimated $110-million production budget. Deadpool 2 had a good HD market share of 64% and sold 81% as many Blu-rays and 63% as many total units as Ocean's 8.

Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Avengers: Infinity War rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales lists. This third entry in the joint The Avengers series - and the most narratively consequential MCU feature of 2018 - Infinity War has proven to be one of the year's biggest successes. After receiving decent critical notices (a 68% score on Metacritic), the film then went on to gross over $2 billion worldwide on top of its massive estimated production budget (somewhere in the realm of $315-to-$400 million). Infinity War had a solid HD market share of 64% and sold 75% as many Blu-rays and 58% as many total units as the Ocean's sequel.

.02 and .01 sales percent on long ago released 3D titles makes one wonder how many total units each one sold. How many times in history has five total units sold got in the top five?

@bigkt123 they used to be quite a bit cheaper than Blu-ray discs, so I could understand why the casual movie watcher would buy the DVD instead. But the cost difference now is a couple of dollars or less. I was with my sister at Target the other day when she put a DVD in her cart, and I pointed out the Blu-ray of the same film was only $1.50 more (she has a Blu-ray player). She said the picture quality difference wasn't that noticeable to her. If she and others are happy with the DVD, more power to them. It doesn't affect our lives any.
