Blu-ray Sales, November 25-December 1: Incredibles 2 Beats Deadpool 2

Posted December 9, 2018 12:08 AM by Josh Katz

Blu-ray Disc
For the week that ended on December 1st, Pixar and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Incredibles 2 returned to the number-one spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. Director Brad Bird's long-awaited follow-up to his iconic 2004 superhero adventure, Incredibles 2 was a massive commercial success following its June 2018 release. The film scored terrific critical notices (it has an 80% score on Metacritic), and then it went on to gross over $1.2 billion worldwide on top of its estimated $200-million production budget. This week, the film had a very good Blu-ray market share of 63%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media sales rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's Deadpool 2. The much-anticipated follow-up to Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds' 2016 smash hit, this raunchy action-comedy proved almost as successful as its predecessor. Deadpool 2 garnered fine critical notices (note its 66% Metacritic score) and grossed over $734 million worldwide on top of its estimated $110-million production budget. Deadpool 2 had a Blu-ray market share of 59% and sold 43% as many Blu-rays and 47% as many total units as Incredibles 2.

Finally, Marvel and Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Avengers: Infinity War rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only sales list. The third entry in the joint The Avengers series - and the most narratively consequential MCU feature of 2018 - Infinity War has proven to be one of the year's biggest successes. After receiving decent critical notices (a 68% score on Metacritic), the film then went on to gross over $2 billion worldwide on top of its massive estimated production budget (somewhere in the realm of $315-to-$400 million). On the Blu-ray-only list, Infinity War had a terrific HD market share of 71% and sold 39% as many Blu-rays as Incredibles 2. Regarding the overall package-media chart, the film came in eighth place (The Meg took the number-three position) and sold 35% as many total units as the Incredibles sequel.

You are misinterpreting the information. Polar Express 3D and Kong Skull Island 3D are not outselling "most" 4k titles; the information provided does not support such an assertion.

Among 3D titles ONLY, Polar Express and Kong Skull Island are selling the best within that format. Of those buying Polar Express that week, 18% chose the 3D edition. It means nothing more than that. Neither of these titles are among the top 10 sellers whereas Avengers Infinity War is among the top 10 AND 23% of such Avengers Infinity War purchases are on 4K.

3D and 4K are like laserdisc: VERY niche.
