Jaws 2 45th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray
Posted May 23, 2023 11:16 PM by
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will celebrate the 45th anniversary of Jeannot Szwarc's Jaws 2 (1978) with a brand new 4K Blu-ray edition of the film, which is scheduled to arrive on the market on July 4th.
Description: The horror is far from over as Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary and Murray Hamilton reprise their iconic roles in Jaws 2. Four years after the great white shark terrorized the small resort of Amity, unsuspecting vacationers begin disappearing in an all-too-familiar fashion. Police Chief Brody (Scheider) finds himself in a race against time when a new shark attacks ten sailboats manned by teenagers, including his own two sons. The same heart-stopping suspense and gripping adventure that enthralled movie audiences throughout the world in Jaws returns in this worthy sequel to the original motion picture classic.

Okay. I’m excited and disappointed by this announcement. It’s just a lazy attempt to get us to buy this. Let’s start with the specs. The audio will undoubtedly be the same crappy DTS-HD MA 2.0 that was available in the standard blu-ray release. Let’s face it, it was crappy when it came the first and more likely it’ll sound crappy again. I don’t know if it’s the original audio from its theatrical run, more likely it’s not. No Dolby Vision. That’s okay for me, but a lot Jaws fans were hoping for it to be included in this release. No Atmos upgrade. Not necessarily a dealbreaker, but a newly remaster DTS-HD MA 5.1 would’ve been a huge win for Universal. As far as the extras, just the recycling of the previous extras. What a huge letdown this release is. Now I know that Shout! Factory couldn’t get their hands on this release, rumor has it, that they tried to do one, but Universal ultimately said no. This could’ve been a stellar release for the fans, but it’s just a typical cash grab on Universal’s part.
A lot of hate for “Jaws 2”. It was never going to touch the perfection of the original “Jaw” and for me it doesn’t need to. In the summer of 1978, I was 6 years old, my family took our Volkswagen Beetle to the Drive In for a triple feature. In order, “Grease”, “Jaws” and “Jaws 2”. My favorite film experience of my life at just 6 years old. “Jaws 2” isn’t perfect, not terrible either. It’s an excellent popcorn movie that takes you back to Amity with Chief Brody and his family. It’s absolutely the best of the “Jaws” sequels.
@NightFeverMusic
Totally agree. One of the most successful sequels of all time. I find it interesting that Jaws 2 seems to be influenced by slasher films of that period as well. Day One for me too!
I was hoping for an Atmos mix to change things up a little. I'll pick it up, but it's a disappointing release. At least they went with the original poster artwork.
Jaws 2, a perfectly adequate and serviceable sequel that lags a bunch in the middle. I love it! The score rivals the one from the original. I think I'll upgrade, but I'm gonna wait for the review.
So thanks to fuzzyfoot I learned about this lost scene (which I jever even knew there was lost Jaws stuff), and the website Bootleg Comparisons. There’s some really cool shit on there, lot of horror stuff too.
No Atmos, DTS:X, or even a 5.1 track here may be a little disappointing, but I'm still gonna buy this since it is a pretty decent sequel when especially compared to the next two films after this, lol.
Can’t wait for this on 4K. The only good Jaws sequel in the series. In my eyes, the main series ended after this one, and the other two that came after it were just spin-offs.
Although I’m sure it’s inevitable that Universal will be announcing a 40th anniversary edition of Jaws 3D (Jaws III) for 4K sometime soon…
I seem to be the only finatic who absolutely detests that "2". As nitpicky as it seems, that is definitely not original poster art. Have to go custom on that one...
@NebulaM78
That is the original one-sheet poster art from 1978. Are you going to need a custom cover just to get the proper font for the number "2"? How did you even notice that? LOL ;-)
Gotta love how much Michael Brody aged between the original film and this one. Chris Rebello was 10 when Jaws began filming. Mark Gruner was 18 during the production (playing 17). That's some growth spurt they gave the kid. I guess that's why the movie is set four years after the original instead of three 😁
Jaws 2 is the only good sequel in the jaws franchise. I’m getting the UK edition. It looks pretty good. It’s a steelbook, with a 40 page book, cards, and a poster.
A day one buy for me. Far superior to the sequels that came later. Would've been nice to get some more bonus material but I'm happy just to get it in 4K!
I dunno what your all's deal with needing "new features", when Jaws 2 already came equipped with all the features you'd want sans a commentary? What else would you need?
When Universal inevitably releases the complete Jaws franchise in 4K, will they include 3D Blu-rays of Jaws and Jaws 3, like they did with the 4K release of Creature?
Definitely buying. It’ll never live up to the original but it’s a fun, not too serious romp with some contractually obligated familiar faces…..and it will always be the best of the sequels.
If they do eventually release Jaws 3-D and Jaws The Revenge on 4K UHD, they need to include the TV specials:
"The Making Of Jaws 3-D: Sharks Don't Die" (1983)
and "Behind The Scenes Of Jaws The Revenge" (1987).
The Summer of '78 had so many fun movies. "Grease", "Heaven Can Wait", "Foul Play", "Hooper", "Corvette Summer", "The Cheap Detective", "Revenge of the Pink Panther". I was just a kid and saw everything. Especially "Jaws 2", five times! More than "Grease". I wish they would re-release it in theaters again for a week like "Jaws" late last Summer. I would love to see it on the big screen again. Especially IMAX.
Daytripper, I think that would be an excellent idea for movie theaters. Since we are in the age of Hollywood crap and re-hashing remakes that no one asked for why don’t AMC or other large theater chains start promoting events like Summer of 82 or 1985? Let the movie fans take their families to good movies to boost sales and bring them back that nostalgia? This is not a new idea, a lot of theaters do this but open up the vault and start showing the classics again but a group of movies at once.
I liked this one if I'm honest good sequel just how Robocop 2 was to Robocop not as good as the original but better then anything that came after. PREVIOUSLY RESTORED IN 4K I did not know Jaws 2 had a 4K scan? I'll get this for sure
Paul4films So my guess...guess...is that all the films were restored at 4K resolution between 2012 and 2016. Jaws 1 dropped in 2012, and was rereleased in 2016. Jaws 2, 3, and 4 also got dropped in 2016, and while the transfers are definitely remastered, they still look good at best. (2 and 4 pass the smell test, 3 in either 2D or 3D looks terrible.) They don’t look remastered or restored at all, but that’s probably when Jaws 2 was “previously restored”.
@Shane Rollins you could be right mate, but Jaws 2 does not give that effect of a 4K scan Blu-ray too me, I could be wrong I hope the Blu-ray that comes with Jaws 2 on UHD is also a new disc with this scan unless it's a error in the description and it is indeed a NEW 4K scan? Only time will tell now...
It's telling that Jaws 2 has NEVER been remixed for stereo, while the original was first remixed for 5.1 in 2000. It's debatable whether stems still exist to create either a 5.1 or Atmos mix. While the second film had more than double the budget of the first [depending on who you ask, $20 to $30 million], it has a cheap, almost TV-movie look to it, belying that much of the budget was eaten up by an even more troubled production [original director John Lee Hancock was fired after a month's filming because execs didn't like the dark tone he was pursuing]. Roy Scheider only came back because he was contractually obligated, and it shows. Maybe 4K will look better, but I have no need to upgrade.
"Maybe a box set of I-IV Jaws film collection in the future."
I remember reading or seeing a comment that Steven Spielberg won't allow a boxset for his Jaws & the sequels to ever exist...at least while he's alive.
One of the very first films I saw in the theater - I was 9 - and it scared the living hell out of me, while entertaining me to pieces. Loved every second of it, even though it kept me out of our pool for two years. Deeply disappointed this (most likely) final physical media release of this great popcorn film has again been denied a 5.1 audio upgrade. John Williams score is absolutely gorgeous, and the film lends itself to a stereo and surround experience - it's begging for it. I thought for sure Universal would surprise us with a new mix. They did such a great job with "Jaws", I thought it was inevitable. Such a disappointment. I do have high hopes for the 4K picture though. As for the comment of this being a "cheap, almost TV-movie look to it" comment, I have to ask, Have you actually seen this film? It's stunningly photographed. What a ridiculous statement. Jeannot Szwarc and Michael C. Butler did a fantastic job, especially considering they had to follow-up the behomoth that is the original classic. The originality of using camera angles from the sharks point of view, was inventive and clever, and in many cases extremely effective and terrifying. Too bad that steelbook sold out so damn fast...
Yeah, Paul4films, the current Blu-ray doesn’t look remastered at all. It looks like maybe a 2K job, or a really good DVD. Same with 4. 3 on the other hand looks abysmal. That could be due to the whole 3D thing, but Universal and WB have various catalog 3D releases and they look stunning.
thecoolguy That’s telling. In his mind, Jaws already got degraded by having sequels, putting them all together would only make it worse. And considering he has final approval on all home video releases (which he’s one of the few who doesn’t abuse that privilege), there won’t be a Jaws box set for a very long time.
I have the first Jaws on 4K, and this will be the only sequel I will own on 4K. Hopefully this comes out in other countries like the UK, Australia, Italy, etc.
Please no new Jaws movies. For every legendary sequel, there’s at least a hundred shitty ones. A CGI shark terrorizing people, one it’s already been done, two it’s literally recycling the plot of the original.
I'm surprised. 'Jaws 2", while lacking everything that made Spielberg's film classic, isn't a bad potboiler film. Schrader is certainly always fun to watch.
Why does anyone of the site realize that all this release is just a simple porting over from the original Blu-ray. It claims in this press release that it’s been restored previously in 4K? Highly doubt that it. I’m not trashing anyone who’s buying this, but come on, Universal Studios isn’t doing anything new here. If they truly cared about this release, and realized that “Jaws” fans love this film, they’d do a little extra to make it worthwhile, but they’re not doing this with this 4K release. I know it doesn’t say anything about the audio. More likely it’s gonna be the same audio that was on the previous release. This is a hard pass. I’ll keep my money Universal Studios, because when it comes to films we truly want, you suck at it!
@VikingHead2000 Universal can't be woser then Fox/Disney before they took over Fox where's Aliens Alien 3, Commando before the took over at least ALIEN got a 4K release and Predator and Predator 2 which thank good have good 4K scan transfers. Hopefully Jaws 2 is a new scan we have never seen before I'll get it but if it's an upscale I'll send it back
@Paul4films You’re absolutely dead on with the Fox/ Disney comparison, they suck as well. I’m not banking on this release being an upgrade, at least in the audio/ video department. Unfortunately I’ve written this release off completely.
Because Paul4films mentioned it, excluding movies finished below 4K, do we know of any actual upscaled 4K releases? Like there’s film there that could be scanned at 4K, but they just upscaled the old master? They did a new master and fudged it up (T2) doesn’t count.
most extras same dvd , this is universal pictures rip off , cash cow money grabber and easy pass , the dvd hardly gets played so why should i bother caring to buy this to fill the greedy pockets at universal ? no 5.1 remix , like jaws got for mono original mix and yet nothing new here for jaws 2 , keep your vhs , laserdisc or dvd as this simply isn't worth it
@bludarkknight - Jesus Christ, calm your tits. No one cares if you want to stick to your "vhs , laserdisc or dvd", some of us just want to watch it with the best picture quality currently available - which clearly makes this release worth it for fans.
