Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases. Amongst them are: Hard Boiled (1992), A Better Tomorrow Trilogy (1986-1989), Snowden (2016), and Spotlight (2015).
A death-hardened cop battles the Hong Kong underworld, including his own brother, who joins the bad guys and his former partner in crime. This progenitor of Woo's "heroic violence" films introduces the theme of loyalties between men shattered by a violent world that forces them apart. Only through sacrifice can honor be attained.
A BETTER TOMORROW II (1987)
A genuine Hong Kong firecracker, reuniting John Woo and Tsui Hark, that continues the story of ex-con Sung Tse-Ho (Ti Lung) after his release from prison. Ho is pressured to go undercover to investigate his former mentor, Lung Sei (Dean Shek), for counterfeiting, but he agrees only when he learns his brother, Kit (Leslie Cheung), is also on the case. Lung is framed and flees to New York, where he is rescued from insanity by Ken (Chow Yun-fat), the twin brother of the deceased Mark Lee from the first film. The four men eventually unite to take down the ruthless triad boss responsible for framing Lung and killing his daughter, culminating in a spectacular, extended shootout finale.
A BETTER TOMORROW III (1989): LOVE AND DEATH IN SAIGON
In this prequel to Part I, set in 1974, a young Mark Gor tries to help his father and best friend escape from Vietnam. Mark, not yet the tough guy, meets up with femme fatale Anita Mui, who teaches him how to shoot a gun, among other things. The movie's sense of desperation was undoubtedly heightened by the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which occured just before the start of production. (Summary courtesy of Fredric Dannen).
In this genre-defining masterpiece from action legend John Woo (Face/Off, Mission: Impossible 2, The Killer), a cop (Chow Yun-Fat, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Killer) who loses his partner in a shoot-out with gun smugglers goes on a mission to catch them. In order to get closer to the leaders of the ring he joins forces with an undercover cop (Tony Leung, In the Mood for Love, Marvel's Shang-Chi) who's working as a gangster hitman. They use all means of excessive force to find them.
Follow the incredible journey of Dar (Marc Singer), a mighty warrior with the gift of communicating with animals, in this exciting sword-and-sorcery adventure. Joined by his beastly companions-an eagle, a black tiger, and ferrets Kodo and Podo-Dar encounters bat men, evil witches, and other menaces as he sets out for revenge against the sinister high priest (Rip Torn, Men in Black) who had his entire village slaughtered. With Tanya Roberts, John Amos.
Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone (JFK, Born on the Fourth of July) tackles the most important true story of the 21 st century. Snowden, the politically-charged thriller reveals the incredible, untold personal story of Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Inception, Looper), the controversial figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the National Security Agency and became one of the most wanted men in the world. A hero to some and a traitor to others, the provocative story of what led him to that fateful decision makes for one of the most compelling stories in recent history.
Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel McAdams lead a critically acclaimed cast in this gripping true story about the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation that uncovered a scandal that rocked one of the world's oldest and most trusted institutions. Delving into allegations of child abuse within the local Catholic Archdiocese, a tenacious team of Boston Globe reporters exposes a decades-long cover-up that reaches the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment. "Brilliantly acted and flawlessly directed" (New York Post), Spotlight is a powerful and riveting drama the critics are calling "the All the President's Men of our time" (Los Angeles Times).
Severely traumatized by a near-fatal encounter with a serial killer, TV newscaster Karen White (Dee Wallace) takes time off at a secluded retreat called "the Colony." But when, after nights of being tormented by bestial, bloodcurdling cries, Karen ventures into the woods seeking answers, she makes a terrifying discovery. Now she must fight not only for her life but for her soul!
Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Menu) stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history's most narcissistic boss: Dracula (Nicolas Cage: Longlegs, Face/Off). For centuries, Renfield has slavishly served Dracula by procuring his master's prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, codependent relationship ...
"Forget everything you've ever heard about vampires," warns Jack Crow (James Woods), the leader of Team Crow, a relentless group of mercenary vampire slayers. When Master Vampire Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith) decimates Jack's entire team, Crow and the sole team survivor, Montoya (Daniel Baldwin), set out in pursuit. Breaking all the rules, Crow and Montoya take one of Valek's victims hostage – a beautiful but unlucky prostitute (Sheryl Lee). She is the sole psychic link to Valek and they use her to track down the leader of the undead. As Valek nears the climax of his 600-year search for the Berziers Cross, Jack and the new Team Crow do everything possible to prevent him from possessing the only thing that can grant him and all the vampires the omnipotent power to walk the world in daylight.
Not the OCN since VS says it was "likely" destroyed. My guess would be it's the same transfer or at least source as the VS. The remastered IP. If they found the OCN that would be HUGE!!! And I'd assume be in the announcement.
But this is a childhood favorite of mine so fingers crossed. Have the VS deluxe version but would gladly dip again if improved.
I see now we're getting the A-tier golden princess titles, though I hope shout will get around to certain ringo lam titles of theirs soon (namely prison/school on fire & full contact)
I will be picking up Snowden and Spotlight once the price drops. Definitely in for A Better Tomorrow trilogy at some point. I rented 'City on Fire' 4k disc and will be watching this week to get my first taste of these Hong Kong classic remasters.
I do kind of like that 'Vampires' steel, but I spent good money on the alternate package for the initial release. Waiting to purchase 'The Wolfman' to see what they come up with for a steelbook.
I Can't say I care much for these releases, but scream factory having a release month where every release is in 4K is a huge step in the right direction, even if it's only just 7 movies that aren't on 4K already
I only want part 3 from the "A Better Tomorrow" trilogy. But if I have to buy the entire trilogy to have that, so be it. No need to wait for Arrow, unless Arrow has special features that Shout Factory won't have. Nice cover for "Hard Boiled" though.
I truly hope there are at least 3 cuts for "A Better Tomorrow 3". No interest in "Hard Boiled", even though it has some of the best filmed action sequences in film history, but I'm happy for fans of it!
Hard Boiled 4K and A Better Tomorrow 4K are immediate pre-orders. I'll think about The Beastmaster, but only if it improves on the Vinegar Syndrome edition.
Hard Boiled, I'll try to get at release...that price is nuts though, hopefully it goes down a bit. (between $40-$45 I could stomach) Better Tomorrow Trilogy, must have...but I'll probably have to save up or Christmas list it.
Just discovered that there will be 2 cuts for ABT2 & ABT3. An extended workprint for ABT2 is over 2 hours and 10 minutes. Never thought this was possible. So for that, this trilogy will be mine, whether Arrow includes the same cuts and then some or not. I'll pre-order this and if I like Arrow's release better, I'll trade. But for now, this ABT Trilogy is mine!
@TheArgentinian The artwork for Vampires looks like shit. I'm glad I got the standard version of Vampires. What happened to the artist that did the previous steelbooks of the John Carpenter films? If it's the same artist, they better stop smoking crack.
Hard Boiled and Better Tomorrow Trilogy in 4K..
I never pre-ordered anything faster in my life. Hoping the price goes down for both. Also, the box art for Better Tomorrow... WOOF. Which is strange, because City on Fire had wonderful poster art for its release.
WHAT. THE. HELL !!!
These Shout! covers look AWFUL, and are obviously made from AI rendering of actual stills from the film. Who decided that ?! Total garbage.
Going by this list, Shout!'s 4K edition of The Beastmaster seems to be an exact feature-for-feature match for the Vinegar Syndrome releases. That's excellent news for folks who missed out on those, but as someone who got the VS edition, I'm not sure there's any reason for me to double-dip.
Pre ordered my copy for the “A Better Tomorrow” trilogy. But they really need to fix Anita Mui’s face on that drawing. It’s not cool! I almost can tolerate Ti Lung’s facial expression, even though it looks as if he had a semi-stroke!
Almost shelled out $100 for the Vinegar Syndrome box set of Beastmaster just 2 days ago. Ended up being reasonable and not doing it so I’m gonna get this one. The VS packaging sure was sweet though.
Snowden would be worth it just for Stone's audio commentary (the Shout site list commentaries on both discs) because the (soon to be) old blu-ray had the audio commentary on the HD code ONLY. Who was the idiot that made that decision? I'm a collector. I don't do codes.
Damn those Shout prices are crazy. I think ill wait a while as much as i want em. This and Disney putting out both Tron 4k Steels as well, my poor wallet. I still have my Criterion dvds of HB and The Killer for now until i see some non insane prices
I hate when the Walmart exclusives go to Amazon. Really screws up the database. I've had the Renfield 4K Steelbook since April. Now the release date is 11/11. But you can still get it from Walmart cheaper than Amazon $32.96.
I wish the classic cover of John Woo's Hard Boiled was the slipcover: Chow Yun-Fat holding a baby is absolutely perfect. Regardless, Pre-ordered the 4K of Hard Boiled AND A Better Tomorrow Trilogy. Both Day 1, artwork be damned.
And if anyone remembers the recent Chinese restored 4K version of a Better Tomorrow Trilogy were fetching over $100 per movie not including shipping. So SHOUT's pricing is nothing compared to those.
Hope they can top the hongkong rescue version of hard boiled i'm gonna buy the arrow release.
Lot's of people didn't like the guy but hell what a release.
