StudioCanal to Release the Final Cut of Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man
Posted July 23, 2013 03:23 PM by
StudioCanal have discovered an original print of director Robin Hardy's classic film The Wicker Man (1973), which will be used to produce a brand new Blu-ray release. This upcoming release, which will feature the Final Cut of the film, will arrive on the UK market on October 14. StudioCanal and director Robin Hardy made the announcement on Facebook.
Official synopsis: Cult horror classic in which a devout Christian policeman (Edward Woodward) is summoned to a remote Scottish island to investigate the disappearance of a child. While there he uncovers a bizarre pagan cult, led by Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). As preparations for a sinister ritual celebration reach fever pitch, the policeman begins to realise what role the islanders intend him to play. Britt Ekland and Ingrid Pitt co-star.
This is wonderful news, but how about for us in the states? There are legions of fans holding onto their old crap-vision VHS tapes from the 80s who would like an upgrade!
Yes, not the full unedited cut that is the composite on past dvds, but much of the material (sans Howie's intro) will be presented from the film source. Not everything, unfortunately, but at it'll be mostly film-sourced finally. The movie will continue to be a frustrating experience, but for now this is better than the shortest version. I'm happy.
October's Blu Ray release was announced some time ago. Are they really gonna have enough time to get this "Final Cut" on there? Seamless branching would be nice so we could watch the mainland scenes (which I believe really humanise Neil Howie) in all their dodgy quality and then switch to the final cut for it's duration.
